Any experience with the DPA 4099?

The 4099 is a veritable swiss army knife microphone and DPA make mounts for them for practically everything. They sound pretty good (place I work owns dozens), and while I usually prefer a larger capsule condenser, the 4099 lets you get close to the source. This increases your ratio of direct (the instrument) to indirect sound and lets you get quiet instruments louder in the house before you get feedback.

I’m adding to my mic pack and I’m looking at some more DPA 4099 clip ons. I presently have a some of older models, 2-violin, 2-guitar and a sax model. I’m super happy with them. I noticed that DPA now has some newer models, Core Loud and Core Extreme which look like they handle higher SPL levels.

Essential microphones for a live sound engineer

Some ones I like and use:. Audix i5, Heil PR35, Audio-Technica AE5400, Telefunken M80, DPA 4099 with violin/guitar/piano mount(s), E/V N/D967, Audix OM7, Sennheiser e900-series (for vocals, drums and guitar cabinets), Rode NT55, Shure VP-88…Shure Dual-dyne is pretty cool.

Any suggestions to help with DPA 4009 feedback (using a cello) please?

I’m a cellist and own both the 4099 and the band. Both are great but the DPA is definitely far superior as far as capturing the character of the instrument. Like others have said, the Band is seemingly immune to feedback and I would add also great for outdoor gigs (like weddings) where wind may be an issue. I picked up the Headway Edb2 preamp to pair with it (Edb1 works as well) because the output on the Band is pretty minimal and sound guys seem to get scared of adding +30db gain to it, plus it’s a nice preamp that is designed to work with acoustic instruments.

KM184 are quite a regular reference on technical riders. Why would they be overkill ? If they work for you and you have them, just use them. Other than that, DPA 4099 and Audio Technica ATM350PL have some clips to attach them on the piano, plus any vocal mic for the singer.

And yes, they are amazing for acoustic guitars as well. Just did a gig a couple of weeks back where I used 4 on acoustic guitars, and I had no complaints. I like to keep them away feom the hole though. Though I always reach for the Extreme SPL version for drums, I honestly havent had issues with standard 4099s on drums either.

Sounds excellent and is not overly expensive. But every once in a while there are gigs that require something a little better. I've looked into DPA microphones and so far they seem to be the ones to go for. The DPA 4099 can go on nearly EVERY instrument.
