If you're a person who lives in a big city, always on the go, traveling a lot, or you just simply value minimalism, this is a piece of baby gear that you'll benefit from and probably get the most value out of. Also, because it's a hybrid, you're not taking up trunk space to store a full size stroller in there. So for me, having used the Mesa and the Vista system, it takes up a lot of space and wrestling a 28 pound stroller in and out of a trunk isn't in my top five favorite things to do

 Also, they could have added cheap brakes, but they didn't. I really do like the two pedal system that they built in.  Now, the cool thing is that you don't actually need the base. Instead, you can just use the belt path to secure it. Now, why is that good? I'll elaborate later, but Duna is ideal for on-the-go parents, city living or families without vehicles who use public transportation and ride shares and ISOFIX base doesn't work for those scenarios. So a belt is all you'll have and all you'll need to secure the seat

 It's absolutely perfect for travel. So that's how it's looking as a car seat overall. Now let's move on to how it feels as a stroller. The transition is pretty simple

• Use a duffel bag for a checked bag: Got away with only having one checked bag with a family duffel bag, only rule is that it has to be under 50 lbs. Carried a great infant hiking backpack and specialty formula that way. I bring a travel hook scale to check the weight while traveling.

• If under two buy lap infant tickets and bring a car seat: At the counter before the flight ask if there are any seats available for your infant. 9/10 you get a free seat for your child with the car seat. If it doesn’t work out you can gate check the car seat for free.

• Bring a stroller: Can also be gate checked for free

My wife and I one bag our own things and with full size carry one backpacks fit the baby’s stuff for the most part. The duffel really helps out with expanding supplies that always comes up.

• If you need hot water for formula bottles bring it through TSA in a hydro flask like bottle (we love the zujirushi Thermos). TSA will test it instead of dumping it, it’s a special dietary need issue.

One bag with an infant

 My baby is 11 months now and is about 22 lbs making the carseat with him in it about 40ish lbs and getting it in and out of the car is not possible. My husband is 6’3” and he agrees that it’s very heavy. -baby outgrows it developmentally. As soon as my baby was able to sit up independently he HATED to be in this because it doesn’t allow him to sit up right, so I bought a new stroller for that purpose

Great for a while….

 That can be annoying, especially if you're like in the middle of a parking lot and there's a bunch of people around, there's cars and you're trying to collapse it and get it in the car as quickly as possible or maybe it's hot outside, whatever the case or it's raining or whatever the case is. You're just trying to hurry up and get that down and get it in the car and when you're collapsing it and it won't click into place, it can be quite annoying. To me, it's a bigger nuisance than the canopy bar getting stuck, but it's not something that's going to make or break me getting repurchasing the Duna. So let me show you what I'm talking about

 I haven't had to do that yet. Like I said I've only been using it for a month but I do know that you can remove it all and there's a video on Duna's website that shows you exactly how to do it. Doona Carseat and Stroller Review | Is it worth the money?

For me, the big qualifying information for whether or not a splurge is worth it is how much use it will get. As a SAHM who spends a lot of time going for walks, going to the zoo, etc., a luxury stroller (we have an Uppababy Cruz V2, but will be upgrading soon as I'm pregnant again and the kids will only be 25 months apart so I need a double) is absolutely worth the price for how much easier it makes my life and for how much use it gets. A high quality, easy-to-install convertible carseat with easy-to-wash, comfortable textiles is absolutely worth the price

 I just far preferred to put her in the stroller bassinet attachment, and she preferred it too. 

I’m curious about the expensive baby gear like the Uppababy strollers and the Snoo (among others). 

I have friends who have bought them and swear they are great and worth every penny, but I also have friends with kids who say it’s ridiculous and they’d never spend that much money on baby gear. That said, the people in the latter group have not actually ever used these devices. 

I am curious to hear from people who did splurge and realize it wasn’t worth it. Seems that the bad reviews about either of the above products are about things like shipping issues with the wholesaler, so nothing to do with the products themselves. 

Is there anyone who bought the “top of the line” equipment and really regretted it because the manufacturing/quality/stability was not all it was cracked up to be? I’m interested in these thoughts on other products too. Thanks!

Questions about expensive baby gear

Love it!

Anyone else hate bulky strollers/travel systems? If so, which stroller are you going with?

The pros of this Doona are maneuverability, convenient, and it’s sturdy. The cons are it’s extremely heavy when In car seat mode, sometimes the transition isn’t smooth, you have to make sure the handle is in a certain place to transition into a car seat.

Love this car seat/ you stroller

Product recommendation lists were super helpful for me as a FTM so I wanted to give back by sharing my worth it and not worth it list now that our girl is 2 months old. This list is pretty undeniably bougie. My husband and I are fortunate to both have high paying jobs and generous family members so many of the products on here are on the higher end. By no means are the products here essential to have, but I did find them to be worth having. 

**Worth it for baby**  


1. Solly baby wrap - If I had to be stuck on a deserted island and could only bring one item it would be this. Baby does almost all her naps in this thing, it’s so comfortable for both parent and baby, and once you get the hang of tying it is super easy and quick to do.
2. Baby Bjorn bouncer - Would also take this to a deserted island, that’s how much our girl loves it. So compact and effective, hence why I think I could sneak it with me even if I were only supposed to bring one thing to the island. Would buy this again and again.
3. Snoo!! Controversial pick, but totally worth it to us. We got ours secondhand for half price on Facebook marketplace. Our daughter is by nature a great sleeper and the snoo makes her even better. With the snoo we only have to get up to tend to her when she’s hungry, it otherwise gets her back to sleep 90% of the time when she wakes up for any other reason than hunger.
4. Boppy breastfeeding pillow -  I absolutely love this thing!!! I wish I had brought it to the hospital with me. It made a HUGE difference in the early days and I still use it for every feed now that she’s 8weeks. 
5. Keekaroo changing pad - worth its weight in gold. Makes cleaning up from diaper changes a breeze. Our girl loves to pee on the changing table and if we didn’t have this we’d be swapping out diaper changing pad covers like 5 times a day. Just wipe up the poop/pee, sanitize with a cleaning wipe, and return to changing troll baby.
6. 4moms mommaroo swing - Baby girl only recently started liking this but that’s no fault of the swing, just her preferences. It’s an excellent swing, not ugly, and not bulky. Doesn't ruin my century modern living room aesthetic. 
7. Pampers swaddlers - I would say equivalent to Huggies Special Delivery in quality, but we prefer these for our baby based on our preferences and her shape, they just fit her better.
8. Lovevery activity center - she fuckin loves this thing and it’s designed based on baby development research. Before she started using it I thought it was kind of spartan compared to other activity centers, but it’s actually perfect. Stimulating but not overwhelming and it grows with her interests.
9. Bumco baby butt spatula - seems unnecessary but is absolutely needed. Makes putting diaper paste on so easy. That stuff is messy AF and gets everywhere.
10. Bordeaux butt paste for diaper rash, buy this before you need it. 
11. Water wipes, don’t waste your time with any other brand. The only type of wipe that doesn’t cause irritation.
12. Hair dryer on cool setting to dry baby booty completely before applying a&amp;d or BBP. Don’t use baby powder!!
13. Gas drops!! (Simethicone) buy this before you need it.
14. Uppa baby stroller and car seat system- we have the uppa baby vista2 because we plan to have more than one kid and it really easily adapts to hold a second baby. My friend has the uppababy minu for just one baby, (their travel/everyday light stroller) and loves it. I love that the car seat (mesa) can click right into it. The bassinet attachment is totally worth it, I was skeptical at first but we have used it daily both for walks and as a safe place to put baby (for naps or just to set down) when we are in the living room.
15. A yoga ball! I lived on my yoga ball for almost all of my pregnancy and still use it daily for baby girl's wrap naps. She is a motion junkie and both baby and I prefer the yoga ball bounce to a rocking chair. 
16. Kate Quinn baby clothes- my favorite bougie, totally aesthetic brand to dress our daughter in. Awesome non-tacky patterns, fantastic quality, and great sales regularly. Other baby clothes brands I love are Kyte baby &amp; Colored Organics for solid/minimalist print staples, Pehr for muted prints, Hanna Anderssen for vibrant prints, and Carter’s for cutesy prints.   


**Worth it for mom**

1. Haakaa - if allowed another item on a deserted island, I'd def bring this little guy. It’s awesome for building up a freezer stash and relieving engorgement. I have an oversupply and would be totally fucked without this thing.
2. Frida Mom labor and delivery kit with postpartum care items. 100% worth it. I loved having the labor gown to wear after delivery, so much better than the hospital gown. The postpartum supplies that come with it (my favorites were the peri bottle and witch hazel pad liners) but are all awesome and worthwhile. The labor and delivery kit provides you with the right amount of supplies for postpartum healing
3. Depends boutique adult diapers, just swallow your pride and buy them. Soooo much easier than the giant hospital pads for postpartum bleeding. I brought some to the hospital with me and used them for the first two weeks pp. 100% worth it.
4. Spectra breast pump, I paid extra to get the one with the battery pack but in hindsight I don’t really think it was necessary, but I also haven’t started pumping regularly yet.
5. Milk makers lactation cookies, the best lactation cookies and available on Amazon. I eat 2 packs a day. The salted caramel chocolate ones are my favorite
6. Bodyarmor lyte- seriously helps with milk supply! No added sugar (each is like 20-30cal) and made with coconut water so really effective for keeping you hydrated to be a good cow for baby.
7. Totally not necessary but I loved it, our Caden Lane matching mama robe and baby swaddle. Fabric is sooooo soft. The robe is more of a house dress and stays closed better than a regular robe, I lived in this thing for the first 2-4weeks along with my posh peanut robe that matched her going home outfit.
8. Maymom bottles and pump parts, available on Amazon and work with spectra and other major pump brands! Cheaper than name brand and I actually prefer them.
9. Sunflower lethicin supplement to prevent clogs. I have taken this daily since coming home from the hospital and haven’t had a single clog. I use the one from Legendairy Milk.
10. Lavie lactation massager, a vibrator would do the job just as well but I use this thing like daily to get milk flowing and when I feel like there’s an area that might clog.
11. Latched mama nursing shirts for outside the house and motherhood maternity nursing camis for inside the house, I live in these things.
12. Athleta jeans for when you no longer fit in your pre-pregnancy clothes and have too much pride to continue wearing maternity pants, so stretchy, comfortable, and well made. Makes you feel like a human being again to wear jeans that fit.
13. Bamboobies overnight reusable breast pads, work better than the disposable ones and saves the environment. I use them day and night.
14. Kindred bravely nursing bras, the sleeping bras are also great for sore pregnancy boobies
15. Ceres Chill breast milk chiller, keeps milk cold for 20+ hours and so much better than fuckin around with a bunch of tiny bottles and a bottle bag when pumping on the go. 

**Not worth it** 

1. Frida mom perineal cushion, damn thing wouldn't keep the air in it. A perineal cushion is definitely worth having but not this one.
2. Nail clippers/nail file. The nurses in the hospital showed me how to just peel the white of her nails off and it works perfectly every time, no need for scary sharp things near tiny baby
3. Buying a single brand of pacifier, bottle, or swaddle in advance. Instead register for or buy the Babylist pacifier, bottle, and swaddle sets and see what your baby likes before you commit. Bottles and binkies are also common items in registry welcome boxes. Our baby ended up liking the Chico physiofit pacifier (when she deigns to accept one which is rare) and comotomo bottles. She also equally liked the dr browns anti colic bottles but we don’t use them because all the little parts are a pain to clean and gas isn’t a problem for her. Baby girl ended up loving the love to dream swaddle that allows her to have her hands up near her head (and of course it was the most expensive one, she’s a bougie baby)
4. Some people swear by the Frida baby products (windi, nose sucker, etc) and we got a kit of them and haven’t used any yet. So I can’t say it’s not nice to have around just in case but also isn’t completely necessary.
5. Oxo tot bathtub, the $20 angelcare tub is way better
6. We use Tubby Todd bath products and I do like them a lot but I don't think they're better than cerave baby or dove products. 
7. Dreft baby laundry detergent, just use oxyclean and tide free n clear
8. Fucking anything pottery barn. Goddamn shit show for it to arrive and expensive.
9. Hatch baby light and sound machine. It’s fine and we use it but I don’t think it’s worth the $60 we paid for it. A Dohm white noise machine works way better for white noise. Having a soft light to use at nighttime for feeds and diaper changes is nice though. So something like it is worth having and I can see why others love it but I’m overall still meh about it. YMMV though, some people swear by this thing. 

**Things I didn't get and don't miss**   


1. A snuggleme or dockatot lounger. Not safe for sleep so why bother. We did get the boppy infant lounger which she never uses but it was only $30 and our cat LOVES it so I can’t say it wasn’t worth purchasing.
2. Owlet sock. Maybe I will feel differently about this once we move her to her own room but we didn't get this and so far I don't regret it. 
3. A wifi enabled video monitor. We do have the infant optics video monitor but haven't used it yet because she only naps in her baby wrap so she's never out of sight... 
4. Willow or Elvie wearable pump. The spectra has worked really well, but to caveat that I have an oversupply and only need to pump for 10min at a time to get what I need.

6. Kimono style baby onesies. We had one and it was too confusing for my sleep deprived husband to figure out so we never bought more and I don't regret it.

<div class="md">Product recommendation lists were super helpful for me as a FTM so I wanted to give back by sharing my worth it and not worth it list now that our girl is 2 months old. This list is long, detailed, and pretty undeniably bougie, we are very fortunate to be a double income household with well paying jobs. By no means are the products here essential to have, but I did find them to be worth it for us. 

Edited: fixed typos, also to add caveat that YMMV with all these things, these are just what worked for us! 

Worth it for baby 

<ol>
<li> Solly baby wrap - If I had to be stuck on a deserted island and could only bring one item it would be this. Baby does almost all her naps in this thing, it’s so comfortable for both parent and baby, and once you get the hang of tying it is super easy and quick to do.</li>
<li> Baby Bjorn bouncer - Would also take this to a deserted island, that’s how much our girl loves it. So compact and effective, hence why I think I could sneak it with me even if I were only supposed to bring one thing to the island. Would buy this again and again.</li>
<li> Snoo!! Controversial pick, but totally worth it to us. We got ours secondhand for half price on Facebook marketplace. Our daughter is by nature a great sleeper and the snoo makes her even better. With the snoo we only have to get up to tend to her when she’s hungry, it otherwise gets her back to sleep 90% of the time when she wakes up for any other reason than hunger.</li>
<li> Boppy breastfeeding pillow - I absolutely love this thing!!! I wish I had brought it to the hospital with me. It made a HUGE difference in the early days and I still use it for every feed now that she’s 8weeks. </li>
<li> Keekaroo changing pad - worth its weight in gold. Makes cleaning up from diaper changes a breeze. Our girl loves to pee on the changing table and if we didn’t have this we’d be swapping out diaper changing pad covers like 5 times a day. Just wipe up the poop/pee, sanitize with a cleaning wipe, and return to changing troll baby.</li>
<li> 4moms mommaroo swing - Baby girl only recently started liking this but that’s no fault of the swing, just her preferences. It’s an excellent swing, not ugly, and not bulky. Doesn&#39;t ruin my century modern living room aesthetic. </li>
<li> Pampers swaddlers - I would say equivalent to Huggies Special Delivery in quality, but we prefer these for our baby based on our preferences and her shape, they just fit her better.</li>
<li> Lovevery activity center - she fuckin loves this thing and it’s designed based on baby development research. Before she started using it I thought it was kind of spartan compared to other activity centers, but it’s actually perfect. Stimulating but not overwhelming and it grows with her interests.</li>
<li> Bumco baby butt spatula - seems unnecessary but is absolutely needed. Makes putting diaper paste on so easy. That stuff is messy AF and gets everywhere.</li>
<li>Bordeaux butt paste for diaper rash, buy this before you need it. </li>
<li>Water wipes, don’t waste your time with any other brand. The only type of wipe that doesn’t cause irritation.</li>
<li>Hair dryer on cool setting to dry baby booty completely before applying a&amp;d or BBP. Don’t use baby powder!!</li>
<li>Gas drops!! (Simethicone) buy this before you need it.</li>
<li>Uppa baby stroller and car seat system- we have the uppa baby vista2 because we plan to have more than one kid and it really easily adapts to hold a second baby. My friend has the uppababy minu for just one baby, (their travel/everyday light stroller) and loves it. I love that the car seat (mesa) can click right into it. The bassinet attachment is totally worth it, I was skeptical at first but we have used it daily both for walks and as a safe place to put baby (for naps or just to set down) when we are in the living room.</li>
<li>A yoga ball! I lived on my yoga ball for almost all of my pregnancy and still use it daily for baby girl&#39;s wrap naps. She is a motion junkie and both baby and I prefer the yoga ball bounce to a rocking chair. </li>
<li>Kate Quinn baby clothes- my favorite bougie, totally aesthetic brand to dress our daughter in. Awesome non-tacky patterns, fantastic quality, and great sales regularly. Other baby clothes brands I love are Kyte baby &amp; Colored Organics for solid/minimalist print staples, Pehr for muted prints, Hanna Anderssen for vibrant prints, and Carter’s for cutesy prints. </li>

Worth it for mom

<ol>
<li> Haakaa - if allowed another item on a deserted island, I&#39;d def bring this little guy. It’s awesome for building up a freezer stash and relieving engorgement. I have an oversupply and would be totally fucked without this thing.</li>
<li> Frida Mom labor and delivery kit with postpartum care items. 100% worth it. I loved having the labor gown to wear after delivery, so much better than the hospital gown. The postpartum supplies that come with it (my favorites were the peri bottle and witch hazel pad liners) but are all awesome and worthwhile. The labor and delivery kit provides you with the right amount of supplies for postpartum healing</li>
<li> Depends boutique adult diapers, just swallow your pride and buy them. Soooo much easier than the giant hospital pads for postpartum bleeding. I brought some to the hospital with me and used them for the first two weeks pp. 100% worth it.</li>
<li> Spectra breast pump, I paid extra to get the one with the battery pack but in hindsight I don’t really think it was necessary, but I also haven’t started pumping regularly yet.</li>
<li> Milk makers lactation cookies, the best lactation cookies and available on Amazon. I eat 2 packs a day. The salted caramel chocolate ones are my favorite</li>
<li> Bodyarmor lyte- seriously helps with milk supply! No added sugar (each is like 20-30cal) and made with coconut water so really effective for keeping you hydrated to be a good cow for baby.</li>
<li> Totally not necessary but I loved it, our Caden Lane matching mama robe and baby swaddle. Fabric is sooooo soft. The robe is more of a house dress and stays closed better than a regular robe, I lived in this thing for the first 2-4weeks along with my posh peanut robe that matched her going home outfit.</li>
<li> Maymom bottles and pump parts, available on Amazon and work with spectra and other major pump brands! Cheaper than name brand and I actually prefer them.</li>
<li> Sunflower lethicin supplement to prevent clogs. I have taken this daily since coming home from the hospital and haven’t had a single clog. I use the one from Legendairy Milk.</li>
<li>Lavie lactation massager, a vibrator would do the job just as well but I use this thing like daily to get milk flowing and when I feel like there’s an area that might clog.</li>
<li>Latched mama nursing shirts for outside the house and motherhood maternity nursing camis for inside the house, I live in these things.</li>
<li>Athleta jeans for when you no longer fit in your pre-pregnancy clothes and have too much pride to continue wearing maternity pants, so stretchy, comfortable, and well made. Makes you feel like a human being again to wear jeans that fit.</li>
<li>Bamboobies overnight reusable breast pads, work better than the disposable ones and saves the environment. I use them day and night.</li>
<li>Kindred bravely nursing bras, the sleeping bras are also great for sore pregnancy boobies</li>
<li>Ceres Chill breast milk chiller, keeps milk cold for 20+ hours and so much better than fuckin around with a bunch of tiny bottles and a bottle bag when pumping on the go. And you can pump right into it!! Love this thing. </li>
</ol>

Not worth it 

<ol>
<li> Frida mom perineal cushion, damn thing wouldn&#39;t keep the air in it. A perineal cushion is definitely worth having but not this one.</li>
<li> Nail clippers/nail file. The nurses in the hospital showed me how to just peel the white of her nails off and it works perfectly every time, no need for scary sharp things near tiny baby</li>
<li> Buying a single brand of pacifier, bottle, or swaddle in advance. Instead register for or buy the Babylist pacifier, bottle, and swaddle sets and see what your baby likes before you commit. Bottles and binkies are also common items in registry welcome boxes. Our baby ended up liking the Chico physiofit pacifier (when she deigns to accept one which is rare) and comotomo bottles. She also equally liked the dr browns anti colic bottles but we don’t use them because all the little parts are a pain to clean and gas isn’t a problem for her. Baby girl ended up loving the love to dream swaddle that allows her to have her hands up near her head (and of course it was the most expensive one, she’s a bougie baby)</li>
<li> Some people swear by the Frida baby products (windi, nose sucker, etc) and we got a kit of them and haven’t used any yet. So I can’t say it’s not nice to have around just in case but also isn’t completely necessary. Edit: I hear you loud and clear comments, I’m going to be happy to have these around one day!</li>
<li> Oxo tot bathtub, the $20 angelcare tub is way better</li>
<li> We use Tubby Todd bath products and I do like them a lot but I don&#39;t think they&#39;re better than cerave baby or dove products. I’ll probably continue to buy them though because I like supporting a small company </li>
<li> Dreft baby laundry detergent, just use oxyclean and tide free n clear</li>
<li> Fucking anything pottery barn. Goddamn shit show for it to arrive and expensive. We ordered the furniture in March, baby arrives in July, in August they say glider will finally be delivered- great! Day before delivery they cancel with no explanation. We call- apparently they STOPPED MAKING THE GLIDER. And if we wanted another one we’d have to start the entire process all over again. We said fuck that and ordered the babyletto from crate and barrel. It’s arriving within 4wk of order and the ottoman is already here</li>
<li> Hatch baby light and sound machine. It’s fine and we use it but I don’t think it’s worth the $60 we paid for it. A Dohm white noise machine works way better for white noise. Having a soft light to use at nighttime for feeds and diaper changes is nice though. So something like it is worth having and I can see why others love it but I’m overall still meh about it. YMMV though, some people swear by this thing. </li>
</ol>

Things I didn&#39;t get and don&#39;t miss

<li> A snuggleme or dockatot lounger. Not safe for sleep so why bother. We did get the boppy infant lounger which she never uses but it was only $30 and our cat LOVES it so I can’t say it wasn’t worth purchasing.</li>
<li> Owlet sock. Maybe I will feel differently about this once we move her to her own room but we didn&#39;t get this and so far I don&#39;t regret it. </li>
<li> A wifi enabled video monitor. We do have the infant optics video monitor but haven&#39;t used it yet because she only naps in her baby wrap so she&#39;s never out of sight... </li>
<li> Willow or Elvie wearable pump. The spectra has worked really well, but to caveat that I have an oversupply and only need to pump for 10min at a time to get what I need. </li>
