I like the arch support section in Darn Tough a little better, less slippage. They also seem to hold up to washing and drying a little bit better.

Cushion. Without a doubt. The weight of the merino wool is what determines warmth, not the amount of cushioning. Just make sure it's from a good brand like Smartwool, Darn Tough, or Icebreaker.
