They’re nice and all but nothing could possess me into wearing AJ1’s up a mountain. A solid pair of Gore-tex would probably cost as much as a few pairs of reps.

Lets talk rain shoes!

I just wear Gore-Tex aka GTX lined shoes. These are waterproof and more importantly breathable made by tons of brands in tons of styles.

15k vs 20k waterproofing

Your sweat not getting out can and does lead you to being damp or wet, more often than you getting wet from being in a storm. Unfortunately there are no great agreed upon standards to compare breathability between waterproof breathable materials. I tend to stick with gore Tex as a result, not because it is superior to all others but because I know it breathes well.

15k vs 20k waterproofing

I'd highly recommend just getting gore-tex. I use non-goretex for spring days, but if there's powder or you're riding while it's snowing, gore-tex will keep you dry.

Let’s talk mitts

Dakine Baron Gore Tex!!! I have awful hand circulation, if they aren’t already frozen in between getting out of the car and into these mitts they stay toasty. If it’s really cold I put hand warmers in them for a little but usually not the whole day. They have a good inside that wicks moisture and is comfortable.

Bicycle commuting boots?

They’re pretty heavy for cycling footwear but they work well enough I never felt the need to get anything else. I wear them for rain in the summer and with thick wool socks for -40 in the winter. My bike commute has always been fairly short though (like 7km). If I was more concerned about efficiency I’d get actual waterproof cycling boots.

Military winter sleeping bags are very good value for money, the US modular version is black so it looks ok and is very versatile. I use this and a gore Tex liner in the winter in Finland down to -10 to -15

Nicely done. Switch to snow tires and don on a Gore-Tex coat - you will be good to go for the winter!

Best winter gear and apparel

A gore Tex jacket, fleece and a down puffy jacket. The gore Tex keeps the wind and rain out, the fleece dries quickly if you wear it and get sweaty and the down jacket is really warm, light and easy to pack.
