Canyon really impressed us with the new Spectral:ON CF 8. Redesigned for the 2022 model year, this bike rolls on mixed wheel sizes with 155/150m of travel, a modern trail riding geometry, and a full carbon frame that houses a massive 900Wh battery. The trustworthy Shimano EP8 motor has been angled slightly to accommodate the large battery which has been specially designed to keep the weight as low as possible in the frame. The result is a shockingly well-balanced bike that remains impressively maneuverable and lively despite its heavy weight. At the same time, it's very stable with enough travel to confidently handle just about anything most people would consider riding down without feeling like a handful in mellower terrain. The trail riding geometry strikes a nice balance for climbing comfort, maneuverability, and versatility that make it very well-rounded, while a great build further enhances its performance. Did we mention it has a 900Wh battery? Range anxiety is pretty much a thing of the past as the Spectral:ON packs enough juice to make sure you run out of energy before it does. Canyon's consumer-direct sales model also means they offer this bike at a very competitive price, relatively speaking, and we feel it is an excellent value.
It's not all gold stars for the Spectral:ON CF 8. While it is impressive that they've managed to squeeze 900Wh of battery into the frame, the resulting bulge at the bottom of the downtube reduces clearance quite noticeably. Combined with a relatively low bottom bracket height means that bottoming out on the skid plate may occur in some situations. The Fox 36 Rhythm fork does a pretty good job at the front of the bike, but we found it to be a bit flexy under braking and in rough terrain at speed. And, while we love the Maxxis Minion DHR II and Assegai tire combination, the EXO+ and EXO casings, respectively, are not quite beefy enough to handle the weight and charge-ability of the Spectral:ON. Yes, tires are an inexpensive upgrade, but it should come with something a little beefier, in our opinion. Beyond those concerns, we think you'd have a hard time finding a better electric mountain bike, especially at this price.

 Despite sharing the same rear travel as bikes like the Merida E160 and Trek Rail, the Spectralon leans more towards general trail riding than excelling on pure gravity terrain. The bike's 66.5 degree head angle feels a touch steep on steeper and more technical trails and going to a 36 fork from riding forks like the 38 and Rockshox ZEB on other e-bikes makes a noticeable difference to front end stability on really rough and brake heavy descents. Whilst the Spectralon's lower overall weight than most other e-bikes in this travel bracket contributes to its playful nature, I think specking a 160mm fork with 38mm staunchens would have been worth the additional weight

 Starting at the front of the bike, the CF-8 is equipped with a Fox 36 performance fork. Whilst this fork lacks the bells and whistles of Fox's higher-end offerings, I didn't feel like the fork's damping was letting me down on the trail. Moving up to the cockpit, the CF-8 as well as a top of the range CF-9 come with Canyon's CP12 integrated carbon cockpit. Whilst this unit locks you into Canyon's choice of a 50mm stem paired with a 780mm bar, with the exception of the small frame which comes with a 760mm handlebar, I found the cockpit ergonomics to be quite pleasant and the integration of the Shimano EP8 display is really well executed

 Whilst other e-bikes I've ridden of late with 150mm of rear travel have had a definite gravity bias with beefy forks like the Rockshox Zeb and Fox 38 and aggressive geometry to match, the Spectralon is clearly aimed at more all-round trail performance with both its geometry and spec. The CF-8 I've got here retails for $10,899 and as such delivers a solid spec package. Starting at the front of the bike, the CF-8 is equipped with a Fox 36 performance fork. TESTED: Canyon Spectral:ON CF 8 eMTB Review

 Hi everyone, Will from AMB here and today I'm reviewing the all new Canyon Spectralon CF-8.

 It's Canyon's first foray into the EMTB market here in Australia and it's a bike that will

 appeal to plenty of riders across the country due to its travel, geometry and use of the

 There's plenty of details about this bike that are pretty interesting, so let's get

 As I said in the introduction, the Spectralon uses Shimano's EP8 motor.

 I've got nothing but good things to say about the EP8 system.

 While Shimano do offer riders the opportunity to customise the motor's characteristics

 through their E-Tube app, I've found the stock settings on the Canyon suited the bike

 The Spectralon sits in a competitive category that includes bikes like the Specialized Levo,

 Whilst these bikes all share 150mm of rear travel, the Spectralon is the only bike that

 uses 150mm in the front, whereas the three bikes I've just mentioned use a 160mm fork.

 This subtle difference is a telling indicator when it comes to the character of the Spectral.

 Whilst other e-bikes I've ridden of late with 150mm of rear travel have had a definite

 gravity bias with beefy forks like the Rockshox Zeb and Fox 38 and aggressive geometry to

 match, the Spectralon is clearly aimed at more all-round trail performance with both

 end and the 630wh Shimano battery is housed within the downtube.

 There's room for a full-size drink bottle on the XL frame I tested and the rear suspension

 is also handled by Fox in the form of a performance line DPX2 shock.

 The drivetrain and brakes are a full Shimano XT affair with the exception of the Dior chain.

 As such, there's really nothing to be said in that department, both the brakes and drivetrain

 performed flawlessly throughout testing.

 The wheels are another good spec inclusion from Canyon who have gone with the robust

 While we're on the topic of wheels, the Spectralon uses a mullet setup and Canyon even go as

 far as to spec differing internal rim widths front and rear.

 The 29x2.5 inch front tyre is supported by a 30mm internal rim width whilst the 27.5x2.5

 2.6 inch rear tyre uses a wider 35mm internal rim width.

 Some other little touches that Canyon have really nailed with the Spectralon include

 the cable clips that create a neat and tidy cockpit, pre-installed frame protection against

 cable rub on the head tube and the integrated chain guide.

 A couple of areas I wasn't so thrilled about on the Spectralon were the tyres and dropper

 Canyon have specced an XO front tyre with an XO plus rear tyre.

 Whilst I appreciate the slightly heavier duding rear tyre, it would be nice to see something

 like Maxxis' double down casing front and rear.

 Being a capable 150mm e-bike, the stock tyres simply don't provide enough support for

 the style of riding the Spectralon encourages.

 My second issue with the Spectralon is the dropper post.

 The seat tube on the bike is quite tall but I think there is enough room to spec longer

 I had a fair bit of post showing on the 150mm post on my Extra Large test bike and as a

 result I was manually dropping the post before dropping into steeper and more technical trails.

 Moving onto how the Spectralon performed out on the trail, it's a bike that will suit

 The 485mm reach on the Extra Large model iRoad is fairly on trend for a bike with this amount
