A busy feeder to enjoy the beauty of backyard birds! A truly squirrel-proof feeder that accommodates a lot of birds.

The high-capacity Brome Squirrel Solution200 feeder keeps the birds happy and the squirrels sad. Its integrated ventilation system and small protective ports seem to keep your seeds drier longer, keeping dangerous bacterial and fungal colonies at bay. This protection is especially important for feeders, like this one, that hold larger amounts of seed. And, if a squirrel jumps onto the feeder, its weight drags the metal frame down while the internal plastic sleeve remains in place. The frame's decorative leaves are placed strategically to block the feeding ports and protect the seeds. The outer mesh is metal, which prevents squirrels from chewing their way through it. It also has an added bonus — birds like clinging to it as they wait in line for their chance at the seeds. The squirrel deterring system worked well in our tests, and we saw titmice, chickadees, and finches enjoying this feeder.
On the downside, the Solution200 is higher maintenance than most. We had to consult its manual several times during assembly, and it takes more time to clean. That's a big deal since experts recommend washing feeders with soap and water every two weeks to avoid breeding bacteria or spreading disease. Scrubbing bird droppings off the metal cage is not our favorite step in the process. None of it is arduous, just more so than the competition. If you need a feeder that will appeal to a range of wild birds with a larger seed capacity and squirrel-stumping skills, we find that the challenges are worth the benefits.

 This feeder succeeds at frustrating the furred sqrats but its not working for the cardinals. Looks like I’ll need to design a perch the cardinals can use with this feeder. The company should offer an accessory that clips on the small metal perches to accommodate what cardinals need to get to the seed portals.

Squirrels stymied, cardinals perplexed

Pretty solid overall but has only been in use about 3 weeks—time will tell. The design is better than the one I replaced with this one. This model the entire outer cage drops when a squirrel grabs on so the feeder is blocked off. The previous one only the perches closed the feeder

 Having had this feeder for several months now, and observed the squirrel's behavior, I can now list the PROS of this feeder:  1. The spring loaded action PLUS no foothold for squirrels at the bottom: You won't realize how well this feeder is designed if you haven't seen the antics of really smart squirrels and less well designed feeders! My previous spring-loaded feeder had a fatal flaw - it had a foot-hold at the bottom which one particularly smart fox squirrel figured out how to use to his advantage. Using his feet at the bottom, and pressing up with his hands at the top, he was able to hold onto the feeder WITHOUT triggering the spring-loaded action, thereby keeping the feeding windows open! This feeder has NO foothold at the bottom, and the smart fox squirrel can no longer "cheat" the system! He has tried, but failed every time! (He's very disappointed!)  2. The spring loaded action design itself: This feeder's spring loaded action works MUCH more cleverly than my previous feeder

  7. Proper drainage at the bottom, keeping bird food dry: This is a really good added bonus. My previous spring-loaded feeder had a poorly designed bottom. It had inaccessible spaces at the bottom, leaving bird seed to gather there, uneaten

 Funnel for filling the feeder: Another nice bonus. I'm very glad they provided a funnel to go with this feeder. With the secure locking lid, it would be a bit tricky to fill the feeder without the funnel (especially if your feeder is tied to the tree branch as mine is). The funnel is sturdy and specially designed to fit the feeder, keeping the spring loaded rod in the middle out of your way, as you pour the food in

  In summary...even though this feeder is more costly than the others, it gets the job done!

We have some incredibly crafty squirrels near our home and have been looking for a feeder that keeps the squirrels away but still attracts the birds. This feeder is it! While it looks like several other feeders available for a lower cost, this feeder has certain details that make it worth the extra money you will spend.  1) The "shroud" system (which several other feeders also have) does indeed work to close the ports off every time a squirrel jumps onto the feeder. BUT squirrels are very clever and find other ways to access seed

 These folks actually list many of our commonly spotted birds, along with their body weight (page 8)! Unfortunately they didn't list the English, nor the African swallow weights, nor their abilities to fly with a coconut, but it gave me a good laugh.  The designers of this feeder obviously put some thought into their product, because page 8 also includes the weight of the most common squirrels, which is critical to the overall function in the design. I don't get around much, but I'm pretty sure no other feeder design takes bird vs. squirrel weight into consideration

. right now it is raining, and because of the feeder design, it shouldn't affect the seed, really, at all.
