what's the sharpest knife you've ever gotten out of the box?

 well, mine didn't. It wasn't exactly dull, meaing it could cut paper (barely); however, I have $30 buck knives that cut better out of the box. And every $15 Mora I own could have put the saddle mountain skinner to total shame. I gave it a 1/2 star reduction for that

 but the blade thickness was exactly what I was looking for, so, it hard to imagine that handle thickness would be so inadequate. In fact they are just a fraction of an inch wider than the tang. Very thin handles are not condusive to extended cutting tasks. In other words, it compromises where it shouldn't

 Secondly, it only has a belt loop instead of one of the more modern attachment mechanisms, that would allow you to attach it to molle or a pack, etc. On the bright side it is very light and hugs closely to the hip.  Final 1/2 star deduction is the price. I don't mind paying $130 for a good knife, made with good steel (which this is)

 Only half a star because anyone who buys a knife that's this expensive probably should know how to sharpen it. I do, and I did. While I still wouldn't (and likely couldn't) shave with it now, no functional knife that isn't razor needs to be razor sharp, This knife is still far from the sharpest knife I own. However, it's edge is quite good and it seems to hold reasonably well in no small part because the steel is very goood

Nice Saddle Mountain Skinner! Just got that knife last week and took it camping yesterday. I love that thing ☺

Not the quality I expected.

 I would much rather have had 8 bucks added to the original knife price.  Only reason I removed a star was because of the fit of the knife in the sheath and the kydex belt loop. But the Blade Tech Tek-Lok belt latch makes up for this. Its not the worlds most spectacular knife, but it really has all of the quality's you would expect from the perfect rugged, durable, quality made hunting knife

...  BUT, because Benchmade really thinks things through they used an industry standard when spacing their rivets for the sheath so I was able to take off the cheap kydex belt loop and replace it with a quality Blade Tech Tek-Lok belt clip I had lying around (could even use the same spacer, screws, and nut)

 But the Blade Tech Tek-Lok belt latch makes up for this. Its not the worlds most spectacular knife, but it really has all of the quality's you would expect from the perfect rugged, durable, quality made hunting knife.  ** Photo shown with the Tek-Lok belt clip NOT INCLUDED!!!

 It holds the knife even if shaken lightly, just not as tight as I would hope for considering how and where I will be using it. I would prefer that it was almost hard to pull out. I heated the Kydex by the heel of the knife a little and pinched it around the heel of the knife to try and get a tighter fit which helped out a little. Also, the belt loop made of Kydex is just silly and cheap to me, I would expect more from Benchmade and am kind of disappointed with it

Awesome materials and brand, Kydex belt loop is just silly and not as firm of a fit in the sheath as I would like.

 The knifes are nice for day to day tasks, but also disappear in the bag. I put water and bars in my bag because I’ll do impromptu off-roading a lot, and if I get stuck it’s nice to have. Any questions just lemme know

Hi guys! I have a client who is really into hunting and the outdoors. After our deal goes through I wanted to get him something nice and kinda personal. 

I don't know a lot about knives and I don't know my client very well. 

I was thinking about buying him a Kershaw. In all of my inexperience, I'm sure that this is a good brand for knives. 

What do you guys look for in one for the outdoors? What is something that holds value, elegant, and always handy to have around?

Might also get one for myself lol

Buying a knife as a gift for a client

 The steel used is a high-quality stainless that will take and hold sharp edge. It is the same steel used on the 162 Bushcrafter and that knife has held up well. The design of them blade makes it a great choice for a general purpose camp knife, although the skinner belly might not make it the best choice for some camp tasks. That said, I’d have no problems with carrying this as my primary knife in the field
