So I think this is a really nice sounding microphone for $20 and the build quality is really nice as well.

But in my opinion this mic, if you're on a tight budget, totally worth $20.

Well, that's going to wrap up my review of the Behringer XM8500.

Look at a Zoom Podtrak P4 at $200 and two Behringer XM8500 mics and two decent XLR cables. It will do anything you will want to do for a very long time and do it at a quality you won't be embarrassed by in six months. And you can expand to four people total, either local or with two remote guests. It is a recorder as well as an interface.

I know a guy who sounds great on a shitty Behringer XM8500, simply because that mic pairs well with his voice. It is definitely worth it to go to a studio, at least for one session, and try out a bunch of mics and see what works well for your voice. This works way better than blind-buying a microphone off the internet without trying it out first. Dynamic mics tend to be less sensitive than condenser mics, but this isn't a hard and fast rule.

Now that I've tried both of these mics, I thought I'd share my observations. The XM8500 and the XM1800S 3-pack are some of the best deals in microphones out there. But how do they perform? If you can afford it, the Zoom Podtrak P4 and a couple of inexpensive starter mics like the Behringer XM8500 would be a rock-solid solution and give you a path to remote guests if you would ever do that. The Zoom H series recorders would be better for music than the P4. If money is no option, the Zoom F4 or Sound Devices MixPre-3 ii are spectacular, but may cost more then you want. I'd strongly suggest looking at the P4 and a couple XLR mics.
