 I wanted to do the flush install of the Door Sense part that reads whether the door is open or closed. I was concerned because I have hollow metal double doors, but as you can see in the picture, I was easily able to drill the hole per their directions, and then the part fit perfectly in the hole without falling through. It can also be installed on the door with included double sided tape if you don't want to drill a hole.  The lock looks and works great

 They say it is not supposed to unlock your door until you are within "a few feet" of the lock, but that is simply not true. The lock has unlocked twice this week from me just pulling into my garage and coming in the house that way. Doing this I am not closer than 20 feet to the lock, but it is still unlocking. This is dangerous and a poor design

Update to my review below. I dropped my rating from 5 stars down to 3. I have now been using this lock for a week and am experiencing problems, some the same as what others have complained about. My two big issues are:  1

 The auto-unlock feature does not activate itself until you are more than 200 yards from your house. Then it will activate so when you get back the lock will sense you have returned from being away and unlock the door when you get within a few feet of the lock.

1/14/2022 Update In short, I STRONGLY recommend a different smart lock due to the issue with the Gen 4. Either save yourself some money and buy the Gen 3 lock with August Connect, or get yourself a lock from a different manufacturer because August's software developers seem unable to fix this issue. After a month of being unable to resolve the battery-eating issue, customer service sent me an August Connect - a small square device you plug into a power outlet near the lock. The Connect handles the wi-fi communication with your router, and only speaks with the lock via low-power bluetooth

 Customer support doesn't seem to care, they effectively consider the issue resolved. It's been over 4 months and my battery-consumption issue hasn't been fixed.  10/03/2021 First smart lock I've purchased because I've been waiting for others to help companies get the kinks worked out. I ended up pulling the trigger on this lock because the reviews were solid, it didn't require much in the way of installation / new hardware, and I wouldn't need another bridge plugged into my network

Generally a great lock, but the battery consumption and support are terrible

 and their feature stack. I want to preface this review with its integration with Home Assistant has my hub of choice being mandatory, and this integration is extremely poor.  The main issue I have is the cloud resources. August clearly strangles the computation of your lock's state in their cloud thus minimizing communication with your lock and creating innacurate states

  This can be fixed if the lock was queriable over the local network and not through the cloud or if it was using zwave or zigbee protocol since these are local as well. I did choose the wifi lock, and now regret that choice. Maybe the zwave one is better for Home Assistant  All of that being said, the lock does do its job of keeping my house secure. It covers the basics, and has a great physical design, so I don't want to completely trash the rating

When the lock incorreclly reports as unlocked I can simply tell it to lock and no harm done which what i do in most cases.  Bottom line: if you want to automate with this lock using Home Assistant I'd keep looking, but if you dont mind using the app and dont care if it communicates with other existing smart devices this lock works great

 I don’t know if it’s easy or not to install as I hired a locksmith (I needed a new lock entirely to be able to put this one on). Locksmith mentioned that he was not fan of these as it’s separated from the lock itself and, in fact, suggested me to avoid opening with the key too much as the mechanism could get ruined. I don’t know if this is true but I’ve been following his advice. Here are my BUTs: - battery life is really, really short (about a week or two… so if you go on vacation, or Airbnb this is not a solution, your guests will be locked out) (I use my lock 6-8 times a day only) - the notification of the battery life is not reliable, with no warning right before or when they died

You’re getting a problem more than a solution

 If I have my iPhone in my hand unlocked, the door will unlock by the time I reach it, if my phone is in my pocket - I have to make sure to click the side button to wake it and the door unlocks few seconds after I reach it. But the time when I most need this feature is when I'm carrying a bunch of bags or packages from the mail room, so I end up standing there for like 20-30 seconds waiting for the lock to unlock since I havent been able to trigger it with my phone. The advertisement says that when your hands are full the lock will unlock itself and etc, but I clearly need the phone to be unlocked to have it work seamlessly. I have an iPhone and Apple Watch which supposed to be e even better

It is beyond frustrating and the August CS hasn't been able to help me with that

 My first experience with the Schlage smart lock was good. It was relatively easy to install, and it had a removable ring, making it one of the few smart locks that fit in smaller bore holes (which are surprisingly common in any house old enough to vote). The Schlage has a keypad, so you can get in even if you don't have your keys or your phone. It also has a traditional key, which is useful if the batteries die, although you'll have to have a locksmith re-key it if you want the key to match others (e

 Unfortunately, in our case, that email message arrived three days after we closed up the house and left for another state to take care of an elderly parent for an indefinite period. The whole point of putting this smart lock on the door was so I could let people (e.g., the furnace repair guy) into the house while we were gone

 Another upside is that this type of lock is incredibly hassle and maintenance free -- I installed Lockey mechanical locks on an exterior garage door and two basement doors 25 years ago, and they're all still working great. If you don't need to lock and unlock your door remotely, this old mechanical technology is worth considering.  That's it. Comparison of August, Schlage, and Lockey

 Very annoying when I am snuggled in my 3rd floor bedroom and need to trudge to the basement to verify the door is indeed locked and closed, despite what the app says. This recalibration is needed roughly equally on all four doors, regardless of how I mounted the sensors or where the door is located.  The lock settings may only be configured when you have a Bluetooth connection with the lock, thus only when you’re standing within a couple of feet or so - you can’t change a setting remotely (say, adding a smart alert or toggling the geofencing function).  The app is just bad, and unreliable

  On average, the auto-lock/unlock feature fails once every three or four days, which requires me to set down my armful of groceries and kids, root for my phone, see if the app is reporting correctly, and then - often as not - reach in my pocket for my keys. Too many times I have come home find the doors never locked at all, despite the app saying they did (and still were).  HomeKit integration has never worked. Not once

 Again, for all other units in the HomeKit system the WiFi is rock solid for weeks on end.  Finally, the most disappointing aspect is the miserable battery life of these units. I have been averaging just over a month per set of batteries before the units report they are critically low on power. I have begun writing the dates on the batteries to keep track of consumption

The app is just bad, and unreliable. Daily, the app misreports the status of one or more of the locks - often when I’m standing right in front of it. This is truly a problem when I’m standing on the OTHER side of the door, which happens often enough that I’ve resorted to carrying my house keys again, and have given one to each of my neighbors - the very thing this lock should render unnecessary

Not ready for prime time

  Immediately after installing the lock and keypad, it stopped working. My phone could connect to the lock, and the app could tell me if the door was open/closed/locked/unlock but neither the app nor the keypad could unlock or lock the door. The website was really not helpful - clicking to see the FAQs took me to a blank page (on both my phoneand laptop), the chatbot didn't have my issue and walking through the steps didn't fix the problem. After I walked through the automated troubleshooting I had the option to submit a support ticket - I did that, but there was no way to add any info beyond the initial complaint I'd selected (literally no free text to enter anywhere in the process to describe the issue or give more info)

 The packaging, app and website look slick but are really lacking in substance. I'm using only my phone and the keypad to control it, no other smart device so I can't say how well it works with those.  The lock was relatively easy to install, though I wish they could link to extra instructions if your deadbolt plate doesn't have visible screws (a minor point).  The instructions that come with the lock are very sparse; it was not hard to navigate through the app but I would have liked to look over all the steps before starting

 Maybe the kinks are all worked out now on my lock and it will be smooth sailing from here on out, but I'm not sure this is really a smart solution that can reliably replace a key. If it turns out it works well, I'll probably upgrade to a 3 overall rating but the confusing app, poor tech support, and lack of notifications when someone uses the keypad make it so I wouldn't go higher than that.

 The keypad seems really flimsy and looks super cheap, and while it came with screws, it wasn't obvious where I was supposed to use them (there are no screw holes?), and afai so I just went with the two-sided adhesive which I'm not thrilled about. Connecting it to the lock through the app was NOT intuitive so I'm glad I found that online.  Overall the app is really not great; aside from locking and unlocking it's hard to find settings and functions and I found myself googling a lot (how to change the keypad code, how to add users etc). I was hoping my daughter could use the app on her wifi-only phone but if that's possible, I couldn't figure it out

 Then came the HomeKit part. So, you have to setup HomeKit through the August App. But, at the time, I wasn't tracking the BLE range for it to work. So I kept having problems

.it uses BLE for HomeKit. Seems dumb, but is what it is.  Now the workaround, when you have a device setup as a hub for Home (iPad, TV, Homepod), it acts as a BLE hub as well (if you are home smart-er than me, don't judge my terminology, I'm new here and learning as a go)

 I am one of those who operates on the policy that if it costs more, its better, so I buy it (no judgement please).  Anyway, here is the little nugget that is hidden away in the August help articles. Well, maybe it isn't that hidden, but I certainly didn't realize it. If you are using HomeKit, then the lock MUST be within BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) range of your home hub

 The WiFi lock on the shop no-worky, but when I move one of the HomePod Minis out to the detached garage, it acts as the BLE extender, and bam, lock works.  All in all, I love that this lock only replaces the back thumb plate, that it is very discreet and no indication of a smart lock from the outdoors. It is sleek looking, makes cool robot noises, and very smooth in operation. Armed with the knowledge I have now about HomeKit operation, I can comfortably move forward with swapping the rest of the locks on my property
