You'd be far better served just buying a better CPU with that price difference in the memory instead

 The Xcpu has fallen in price more recently. it's about 230. If you haven't checked recently, that's what it is. It was originally closer to 300

 It's still our primary, very budget focused recommendation. Awesome! CPU For 120 dollars, the 12400 is pretty good. Um, there's a good value overall for the performance versus the price. But really, that I3 is where if you're on a strict, strict budget, you can't stretch any higher

AMD Ryzen 5 5600 vs. i5-12400 & 5600X CPU Review & Benchmarks

 All of the components arrived at my house in Kerala within one week. The processor came sandwiched in-between foam, taped on top of the stock AMD cooler.

This change is intriguing, as AMD doesn't typically alter the cache size of its CPUs. Typically, when the company bins parts as lower-tier products, they disable cores and reduce clock speed but keep cache sizes untouched. It's difficult to tell how much real-world impact this tweak will have, but it's likely to be negligible. Combined with the drop in clock speed, however, it'll probably make the Ryzen 5 5600 slightly slower than the 5600X overall

 It handily beat less powerful parts like the AMD Ryzen 3 3100, the Ryzen 5 5500, and the Ryzen 5 5600G, as well as the old 10th Gen Intel Core i3-10105 and Core i5-10600K. It went toe to toe with Intel's Core i5-11600K in many of our charts, but all the other high-end CPUs clearly beat the new Ryzen in most tests.

Don't take these results to mean that the Ryzen 5 5600 is a bad chip; it performed adequately in all our tests considering its price point. It's hard to fault the chip based on these numbers, but it's hard to recommend it over a Core i5-11600K or Core i5-12500 for around the same price when those CPUs have the on-chip graphics the AMD lacks. (Unless, of course, you already have a compatible AMD AM4 motherboard and GPU you can use, which might save you a bunch and/or get you better graphics performance.)

We installed the Ryzen 5 5600 in our MSI MEG X570S Ace test bed along with 16GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 3,000MHz. AMD ships the Ryzen 5 5600 with a Wraith Stealth cooler, but we didn't use it, opting for a 240mm water cooler for consistency with other CPU benchmarks. [music] Welcome back to Harbor Unbox today! I've got a Gpu scaling benchmark for you using the new Ryzen 5 5600, which will be compared head to head with the core I5 1200f. Now, as I'm sure many of you are aware, though maybe not since Amd avoided sampling reviewers for some reason. Anyway, recently Amd released a number of new Zen3 Cpus and one of them was a non-x version of the Ryzen 5 5600x. So the Ryzen 5 5600, today's sponsor spot is brought to you by Asus's latest range of Intel Z690 motherboards along with their Rog Rogen 2 all-in-one liquid coolers

 Starting with the God of War data at 1080p, we find that both cpus enabled the same level of performance with all four Gpus. The Msi B660-a pro for example, costs a staggering 41 percent more than the B550-a pro at 240 Australian opposed to 170 Australian, and then the gigabyte B550mds3h that can be had for just 115. That means the 12400f is a mere 12 percent more expensive when using a quality motherboard, or 27 more than the 5600 plus B550m Ds3h combo. So here in Australia, at least you can buy into the Am4 platform for quite a bit less, and I don't think the 12400f is worth an almost 30 premium for the Cpu and motherboard combo

 I'll then test them out to see just how different they are to game on, looking at everything from frame rates to thermals and power consumption. Also tune both systems to see what you can extract from them with a little bit of effort, so make sure you're subscribed for all of that and that is going to do it for this video If you liked it, do give it a like. Why buy a Ryzen 5 when 7 is Less?

Great upgrade from first gen Ryzen

I told my 14-year-old son that if he learns to build his own computer I'll buy him the parts. He asked me for a budget, and I didn't have an answer. I have no idea what's reasonable.

He's not a hardcore gamer, but he will probably use it mostly for games. Bed wars, Minecraft, portal, stuff like that. He'll likely use it for school as well but that's secondary usage.

I have $1,500 in my mind. Is that a reasonable place to start? Too much? Too little?

My goal is to help my kids feel enabled to understand the technology that they use. I really hope my son will better understand how computers work if he has to build his own. Any input would be appreciated.

Edit: Thank you all so much for the help. I was assuming monitor and peripherals would be included the budget, and after some further discussions with my son, he DOES want to do more, but our current machines don&#39;t allow him to play the games he wants. So upgrading capabilities are important to the build. I also appreciate that the market is sucky right now, but I think we may move forward in any case.

Anyone got any idea how much AM4 motherboards and CPUs will go down after AM5?

 It runs cooler than I ever thought an AMD CPU could as well, never surpassing about 65 degrees Celsius while air-cooled on a Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler even at sustained 100% usage. I cannot speak for the included air cooler as I promptly threw that one out in favor of the larger Hyper 212, but then I would advise not using the included CPU cooler to everyone regardless of the CPU you're purchasing, be it intel or AMD, cheap or expensive. Nevertheless, to reference my tech friends again, they do say the included cooler is not awful.  If you're purchasing this for gaming, the only game I have seen this CPU max out to 100% usage on is Star Citizen

This is seriously astonishing performance at barely more than what Intel considers a 'budget' price range

I purchased this CPU as an upgrade to my Intel i5-9400F as a life-long intel fanboy, having used a range of i5 and i7 CPUs and even recommended or built PCs for friends utilizing intel CPUs as well. I needed something more powerful to help me do music production work without breaking the bank, and this fell into my watchlist. My friends who work in the tech industry convinced me to give AMD a try with this particular CPU, and it is mind-blowing the sort of performance this 6 core CPU is giving me, at easily 3x+ the performance of the old i5 I had (and I was thinking about upgrading to an i5-12600K originally). This is FAR cheaper, and I cannot imagine the 12600 provides any significant performance benefits - if it even matches the performance of this CPU in the first place - despite costing $80 more at the time of writing this review (there are no ongoing sales nor scalping at this time either)
