 The Echo Dot also have a built in thermometer which you can use as a trigger for different routines. So for instance if you have a fan or a heater plugged into a smart connected plug you can set a routine that switches those on or off when the Echo reads a specific temperature that you deem to be too hot or too cold. It could come in really handy in the summer and in the cold of the winter. In the end of all Amazon's Echo devices I think the Echo Dot is the easiest one to recommend to pretty much anyone

I've recently upgraded from Echo Dot 3rd Gen to the Echo 4th Gen. Both are set up in the same room however when speaking softly, the Echo dot (which is further away by a good 2 meters) picks up my voice compared to my 4th Gen which is less than a meter away from me.

 That's without using the Eero extension on the Echo Dot. The dot has a motion sensor and tempurature sensor that works with my Smartthings Hub. I have not used them because I already have motion and temp sensors in this room that have active scenarios working. I'm going to keep this one and test the sensors a bit more and compare them to ones I have set up already

 She didn’t know that.  Ten minutes later and I’m back on the phone with tech support. Signal drops constantly. Tech support no help on this one hot piece of garbage!!!!  I spent some time on the phone with tech support

 They had to. Get inside and configure it to work. A hassle but it works. Tech support for Amazon can’t help

 range. Do what you can to get the hub closer. It makes a HUGE difference. I did some digging online and found out that the Eero does well and placed up high also

"UPDATE 3" - It has some downsides but good overall.

New Echo Dot 5th Gen | Is it REALLY Any Better?

So recently I purchased a jbl party box speaker for my home. I would like to cast audio to it like I do my other speakers but it did not come capable to do this. 

Is there a way that I can acheive this with the jbl speaker just having Bluetooth and aux ?

 Also the motion detector seems useful but I haven't played around with that feature much.  I can't comment on the Wi-Fi extending capabilities because I don't have an Eero system. It would be nice if this device worked to extend other brands of mesh networks or even standalone routers.

 Also some older speakers don't support Bluetooth, so to use them you need a Bluetooth-to-aux adapter. I'd honestly get the older Dot if you just want to add Alexa to external speakers and don't care so much about the quality of the built-in speaker.  However the built-in thermometer/temperature sensor is nice, I was able to get the indoor temp just by asking Alexa. This actually isn't the 1st device to include such a sensor, but it's the cheapest to do so thus far

Better audio quality than 4th gen Dot, no aux jack

 So if you've got a smart thermostat in your house you could have that routine trigger the smart thermostat when let's say your temperature reaches 65 degrees to start heating or cooling and what's great is that you can place the Echo Dot in any room. So if you've got the temperature that maybe is not as consistent in a bedroom it's nice to be able to track it through the Amazon Echo Dot fifth generation. What is bedroom dot temperature? The bedroom temperature is 67.8 degrees

Now the Amazon Echo Dot 5th Generation has a couple notable updates from previous generations of the Echo Dot. Now it can be used as a Wi-Fi range extender with Eero networks. So that's a huge benefit if you already have an Eero network and you wanted to extend the range somewhere in the house
