 The light on the base that indicates the phone in use tells me that someone (usually my husband) was using the handset in another part of the house. This was useful for me if I got up and began looking around the living room for it but seeing the light told me that I could sit back down and just wait my turn.  The rough finish of this newer phone is just kinda annoying but nothing that I can't live with. They can keep the rough finish but at least give me my lights back!  So, there ya go

  The phone I am replacing has a smooth, shiny finish and more importantly; it has two indicator lights.  We just needed one, and we didn't want anything fancy, so we got the base model. Maybe it was $30, $25, but we have been very disappointed with this.
