Trek Roscoe. About the same pricing and same components as the grand canyon. Just got one for my wife yesterday who Started mountain biking.

Roadie here looking to get into MTB after already getting into gravel.  

Sorry, I know questions like this have been posted before. But just looking for any new input since most of the posts I found in search refer to 2021 or earlier Model Years and it seems like new tech/bikes/builds come out practically weekly.

Looking to spend not more than $1500 or so. Riding around where I live is probably split between "Trail"/"XC".  Probably a more "trail", but gotta climb everywhere.  Ideally also looking for a bike that I won't be itching to spend money to upgrade components. (I know nobody "needs" to buy upgrades, but come on... we know what we are...)

The [Grand Canyon 7](https://www.canyon.com/en-us/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/grand-canyon/grand-canyon-7/2617.html?dwvar_2617_pv_rahmenfarbe=BU%2FBK#all-components-section-tab) comes in around $1300. SRAM SX, Dropper Post, Judy Silver Air Fork. Not sure how Canyon works, but on the Canada site the also list a [Grand Canyon 8](https://www.canyon.com/en-ca/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/grand-canyon/grand-canyon-8/2619.html?dwvar_2619_pv_rahmenfarbe=GY%2FRD#all-components-section-tab) which I don't see listed on the US site.   Looks like the upgrades from the 7 are SRAM SX to Shimano Deore 12, and the Judy fork to a Fox 34 Rhythm.  Price converted to USD is just over $1500. That would actually probably be perfect for what I want. From what I've read SX and the Judy fork are "okay", whereas Deore and the Fox would be a definite step up. But, I don't know if I can actually buy it.  Canyon Canada also gets a [Stotic 3](https://www.canyon.com/en-ca/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/stoic/stoic-3/2660.html?dwvar_2660_pv_rahmenfarbe=GY#all-components-section-tab) at about $1400 (converted to USD), wheres the US site only lists a Stoic 2 ($1200 but 10sp &amp; no Dropper post), or a Stoic 4 ($2000= more than I want to spend).

The other option I see around is the [Polygon Xtrada 7](https://www.polygonbikes.com/product/mountain/xtrada-7-4/). Their US dealer BikesOnline has it around $1k. Comes with Deore 12 and thru-axles. But the fork, Suntour XCR32 Air, (from what I've seen online) seems to be a bit of a let down. Though not sure if it would feel like that to me, who's used to rigid road bike.  Also it isn't  15x110 spacing like the Canyons.  So any Fork upgrade I assume also means you need new wheel/hub as well. The Xtrada also has 27.2 seatpost and doesn't come with a Dropper. So, $1000 upfront, but get a Dropper (what are they like $150 give or take?) and it inches closer to the Grand Canyon7 in price while not having as nice a fork (but does have Deore 12). Not sure what a fork upgrade would cost/if there are any Forks worth upgrading to that would have the same 15x100 spacing.  

As an aside, what does it take to upgrade from something like a Deore 10/11sp to 12?  Just cassette and adjust the Deraileur?  Or do you need new hubs, Deraileurs, shifters, etc?

Anyway, apologies for the wall-o-text.  A bit bored at work here on Friday and maybe I got a bit carried away hahah. Thanks in advance for any input!

Is there a better "budget" MTB out there than the Grand Canyon 7 that is available in the US?

Just got the bike a couple days ago and today (July/9/2022) I went to Culham Trails in Mississauga and had a blast. 

I would buy the bike again

 My only complaint of the 2021 Roscoe 8 was that the front was a little heavy. Other than that, great bike! I think the 2022 model will be even better. 9/10 would recommend.

 [Music] I'm here in Goodyear, Arizona and I'm taking my maiden voyage on the Vetus [Music] Nucleus [Music] [Music] All right. Just got done with my first ride with the Vetus Nucleus and I am very impressed with this bike. This bike is trail ready right out of the box. I do wish that it had a dropper post, but it is internally routed for a dropper post

 I really like how the chainstay has a has a protector on it already. I'm just gonna adjust the psi on the fork to my weight now that the bike is built, let's stare at it. [Music] I'm here in Goodyear, Arizona and I'm taking my maiden voyage on the Vetus [Music] Nucleus [Music] [Music] All right. Just got done with my first ride with the Vetus Nucleus and I am very impressed with this bike

 Probably one of the best, if not the best hardtail on the market, Right out of the box. This bike comes stocked with an Sr Sun Tour Xcr 32 air fork and I would have liked a little bit more damping, but it's still an air fork on a 650 dollar bike which is pretty impressive. And I'm pretty sure that the Vidis branded hubs are sealed, which compared to other budget hardtails on the market, they don't have a lot of sealed bearings which is problematic and when there's not a sealed bearing, it needs to be replaced. If you're serious about mountain biking, I can say that I highly recommend this bike

I think this is the best entry-level hardtail for the money.

If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus. It will be immediately responsive and will require minimal upgrades/maintenance for entry-level mtb'ing unlike a Marlin 5.

I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

A ton of bang for your buck and within your budget. The nucleus can come in a 29er and has modern, slack geometry, hydraulic brakes, a one by drive train, and an air fork. It also has internal cable routing for a dropper post if you would want to get one. Only seven hundred dollars

So I know there is shortage in mountain bikes. I am looking to get one late this season or early next season. Originally I was going to get a Canadian tire (basically a Walmart) or a Costco bike Reddit and other places quickly talked me out of that. I am currently considering the Giant Talon 2, Giant Talon 1, or the Trek Marlin 6. However I am willing to put down 1000$ CAD if there is a good FS bike available. I am open to other hard tails just not something impossible to get my hands on please. Also would be willing to build one if that’s something people do (come from working on anything from PCs to cars). The reason I am considering the FS is basically to future proof like I don’t want to be stopped from doing jumps and drops because I have a hardtail. First time buying a legit bike. Thanks in advance!

Hardtail vs FS

Even with shipping costs this is a great value, Bike arrived with a bent front rotor, the box was beat up pretty bad and labeled repacked. Fortunately the rest of the bike held up well. Welds and construction were top notch. The 8 speed "box4" gearing is surprisingly good

 Have not checked the bottom bracket yet. But this is annoying that such garbage bearings were used considering how inexpensive to do this correctly from the beginning. Not a con but worth mentioning, bike comes with workable pedals. I took a magnet to make sure they at least had a steel spindle, to not worry about catostrophic failure on some trails

 The gray color is gorgeous and better in person. Considering the price, I only have two cons: Would have liked to see internally routed cables (a comparison would be the Rockhopper that has internal cables), but not a big deal (you can internally or externally route a dropper though) the other is the bearings are open, and should be your first and mandatory upgrade (can get them for about $30 for the headset bearings ( size 44/56mm, 1 1/8 threadless). Have not checked the bottom bracket yet. But this is annoying that such garbage bearings were used considering how inexpensive to do this correctly from the beginning
