 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

Love them or hate them, electric bikes are here to stay, and Cannondale’s first go at a gravel-focused model was a huge success in our opinion. After spending some time on the Synapse NEO SE, we came away extremely impressed by the bike’s smooth acceleration, confidence-inspiring ride, and quality build. While the electric Synapse will only assist up to 20 miles per hour (similar to all class 1 e-bikes), this was enough of a grin-maker for even the most skeptical riders among us. You do pay a steep premium for the Bosch drive unit and 500Wh battery, but it’s a boon for daylong enjoyment on remote backroads.

As is the case with all e-bikes, the Cannondale’s battery and motor are very heavy (the Synapse NEO SE weighs in at a hefty 40+ pounds). If you plan to transport your e-bike with any regularity, it’s important to consider the weight limit of your rack and your ability to lift and load the bike. Another issue is power: if you run out of juice on the trail, it’ll be a slow and difficult ride back to your car. And finally, e-bike laws still are evolving and changing, so it’s important to know the rules before you head out.  Give me all the comfort i need when doing three or four hour rides. I, like the fact you have a two piece, aero handlebar and stem i like the shape of the tops and the drops and the bar tape is really comfy as well especially running out. Gloves when it's warm enough, which is at the moment crazy climate change uh to thank for that and on this bike to use the smart sense and particularly the radar, you use your own computer, either garmin or wahoo, which most are compatible now with the garmin vario Radar, low models use a device on a handlebars that doesn't have a computer, gives you a simple readout of a car approaching so different levels of technology based on your experience, but most people buying a bike of this price range, probably have their own computer, their own Preference for a computer so at least they haven't, given you a computer as standard with a bike, but maybe they could, in the future, develop their own or partner with garmin or wahoo or another brand, to give you a built-in computer, but is that a move too Far, probably we have been there before our bike's, giving a smart capabilities of bikes. So at least you have your own computer to fit to the bike

 Okay time. To sum up all my thoughts and observations of riding the new bike for the last two weeks into one concise, succinct verdict for you to take away today, only it's not so easy and there is a tale of two halves on a plus side. I love the performance of a new frame, the handling, the comfort, the speed, much faster than the old bike, much more engaging, much more dynamic to ride, and we have some nice details like an external threaded bottom bracket, a regular seat, post and semi internal cable routing. So those are all a win, but on the downside we have a technology that you can't remove from the bike and that wouldn't be a problem if the technology worked extremely well and worked as good as aftermarket solution

 So this new bike has some big shoes to feel and has it filled them? Oh, yes, it has. Oh, my goodness me, this bike is just phenomenal. What a package it's even faster, even more exciting, even more dynamic to ride. Yes, it's still just as comfy as the old bike, with the same relaxed geometry gives you a higher position than a race bike and a really short footage and planted in high speed situations

Should you buy a 2022 Cannondale Synapse with integrated lights and radar?

 But it's one that we, the cyclist editorial team, all agreed that cannondale synapse has always managed to deliver expertly. So the last time this particular synapse was updated was back in 2017 and that was tall intended purposes. Just a disc brake makeover for its predecessor, because, ultimately, that bike, which was launched back in 2013, was arguably quite a way ahead of its competitors. In terms of the features it was already showcasing um some eight years ago i mean that bike already had a lot of integration of components

 So it could be in the knicker time too, because i'll be honest, whilst this synapse did run out as unanimous winner in our head-to-head best of the best competition for the endurance bike sector. You know the competition is growing ever stronger in this category. So what were those key details that stood out for us that enabled the synapse to just edge out its competitors? So something i think, cannondale has really done well with the design of the synapse, was the way in which it's interpreted the endurance sector, and i think what i mean by that is some of its competitors have maybe over egged that comfort element by having really tall Front ends very relaxed geometry, long, wheelbases and adding in those actual moving active suspension systems and so on, and what that can do if you're, not careful is always the danger of making your bike feel certainly heavier, but even a bit languid in its handling and responsiveness And ultimately, sort of robbing the bike of speed. And yet it's speed that most cyclists all measure themselves and compare themselves by whether that's giving a mate to kicking up the local climbs or getting a gold award in a grand, fondo or perhaps even just riding, to work faster

 I don't know, but here's that sweet spot, that we're looking for really well so there we have it. The cannondale synapse undeniably one of the most prevalent endurance, road bikes of the current era and one that we feel epitomizes this genre importantly not by following others, but by treading its own path and delivering what is expected of it in a clean and unfussy way.
