Toshiba Canvio Basics vs WD My Passport

So far, so good. I also use a WD external drive and a thumb drive. Losing my photos would be heartbreaking. It arrived on time, no problems encountered downloading

I have been very happy with these canvio hard drives. I n fact I think this is probably the fourth one I have bought. I have bought both 1T and 2T versions and have used them for storage of media and have also gifted them. They are easy to use , reliable and very portable

Whenever I buy hard drives (whether external/portable or internal), I always perform a surface scan to make sure that there are no bad sectors or sectors that are about to fail. I use a simple and free program called HDDScan. I resorted to this Toshiba external HDD because after purchasing five 5 TB Seagate One Touch Portable hard drives (which are currently on sale at Costco), I had to return *four* of them due to either read errors or hard-to-read blocks which caused the read/write speed to tank! All four of the aforementioned HDDs also exhibited the dreaded "click of death" -- which automatically give me a panic attack. Anywho, this Toshiba HDD performed as expected! You can see the result of HDDScan that shows no sharp dip in transfer speed

However, this encryption is always-on even if you aren't using it. So, while the disk appears plain-text to the OS the underlying sectors are all encrypted on the disk. As long as the drive is functioning normally this has no real practical implication since plain-text goes in and plain-text comes out. However, in the event you ever need to send this device for data recovery it will complicate the process, increase the cost and time necessary and honestly probably greatly increases the odds that nothing could be recovered

Okay, let's go. Today I've got here the Western Digital My Passport 2TB hard disk in black. A pretty basic unboxing. Just the bare minimums in the box...

I bought this because the SSD's are just way to expensive right now. This works great and with a amazon basic's carrying case I can bring it with me when ever I need it. So far no issues and it seems to to have a pretty decent write speed. I needed a place to put video files and this fit the bill

All four models are readily available for less at this writing, which gives them lower costs per gigabyte in the real world. Even so, the difference in price is so small that it's hard to justify choosing the 1TB version if there's any possibility you might someday need 2TB.

But for IT, Video Editors, Gamers, and Developers, look more towards a SSD External. Buy a SSD and an enclosure, faster and around the same price.
