Anyhow, despite having to cancel plans for an upcoming trip to Europe and despite now working working from home indefinitely, the Bolt Sling caught my eye and I had to get it. (I had had my eye on a previous model from Waterfield -- the another backpack/sling hybrid thing called the Field Sling -- but that seemed to get replaced by the Bolt last fall.)

Hey all, I have been in the market for a new messenger bag for about half a year now and I originally went for a NutSac, specifically the TacSac 15 as I liked how modular it was with the clean external look. However, I quickly found faults with it and soon returned it. 

So, I am looking for something that is not too big and not too small, I would say around 13"-14"Lx10"-12"Hx4"W ideally. Something that I liked about the TacSac line was the modular inside with quick access zippers; so, if possible, I would like that as well with main compartment of the messenger bag being one piece as opposed to separated. Furthermore, I want the material to be top notch, durable, and stylish. I really like the waxed canvas look, so messenger bags like that would amazing!

I do not know if this is asking too much, but any brands that any of you could think of and recommend would be deeply appreciated. Also, I have considered maybe buying a sling instead. However, one thing that I enjoy about messenger bags is their ease-of-access while being worn and how well a sling would look as an EDC in public. How do these translate to a sling? Looking for a New Messenger Bag, Maybe a Sling

I might be in the minority, but I think Tom Bihn is way overpriced for what it does. I would go with a Timbuk2 classic messenger. They're super light, you can customize it, waterproof materials, comfortable, bike straps, several sizes. The pandemic has given me the opportunity to re-examine my carry habits and what I tend to bring around with me. If I’m actually needing to carry a bag with me, it’s usually to bring a computing device along. Typically this would be my laptop, but I’ve realized that unless it’s in a backpack, my laptop is kind of uncomfortable to carry around due to its weight/shape and accessories [e.g., cables, charger, mouse, etc]. I also tried out some slings, but I’m not a big fan of the way they hug my back, so I think I’d prefer something like a shoulder bag/satchel where the actual bag is hanging at my side. 

I’ve looked at a couple of potential bags, and was hoping to get you all’s opinions and suggestions.
 
1. Tom Bihn Medium Cafe Bag - I had one of these years ago and loved it. I eventually upgraded to the Large size when I needed to haul around more stuff and I ended up giving away my Medium bag to a relative. My large bag is still functional, but it’s not the most comfortable as its size lends itself to being floppy and I just dont need the extra volume anymore [if I needed to, then I’d probably just carry a backpack]. I’ve considered getting another one, but they don’t have any colors I want currently, and I dont know if I want to wait around for them to restock. 

2. TB Sidekick - It’s on the smaller side of things and I concede that it probably wouldn’t be able to hold a tablet or standard-sized notebook, but the organization looks amazing and I like how you can potentially carry it as a shoulder bag, sling, or waist pack in case I ever wanted to change things up. Speaking of, does anyone have any photos of it being carried as a sling or waist pack? I can’t seem to find any pics showing how that would work.

3. Code of Bell Annex Liner - This seems like it would satisfy all of my big wants, but I have to admit the design is a little wonky looking to me. I’m also a little concerned about the comfort of the shoulder strap. It looks really thin especially in consideration of its volume. Granted, I would probably never routinely fill it up [again, if I thought I would need to use the full volume, then I would probably just bring a backpack], but it’s nice to know it could accomodate more things in a pinch.

Any comments on the bags I listed or other suggestions you all have would be appreciated!

Suggestions for a satchel-type bag that’s light and packable but ideally still big enough to carry a tablet and/or paper notebook?

We have a bunch of T2 products. I bought this to upgrade to a slightly larger bag from my 2010 XS messenger. While I liked the design changes, I almost sent it back because I thought the materials were less substantial than my little old tank, and I was afraid that it would not have the same durability.  After a month plus of regular use, I am glad I kept it

 I am thinking of upgrading for a bit more space to the medium size with the integrated laptop pocket as a daily work bag, I like it so much. I would definately recommend it again!

After a month plus of regular use, I am glad I kept it. First impressions were very wrong. It is just as durable and well made as my older version, with some really nice upgrades! Better than I expected!

 Easily fixed with a relatively cheap neoprene laptop sleeve. I find the included shoulder strap to be uncomfortable. I bought the Timbuk2 upgrade strap pad and now it's much more comfortable.  ** I'm actually not sure what model I ended up with

0 I'm replacing (21L for each), with the caveat that with the Commuter bag, the volume is split between the main compartment and the two front pockets, which limits the size of large objects you can carry. With the Timbuk2 on the other hand, all the capacity is in the main compartment, and the front pockets are only for organization, not really for extra capacity. This is a pro and con, but overall I like being able to carry larger objects in a bag that is roughly the same size.  One thing I find as a fatal flaw is the new placement of the buckles

  Pros:  1. The bag is very light in weight. 2. The outside Napoleon zip pocket was ideal for holding my checkbook for quick access

 Widen and deepen the size of both the interior and exterior pockets to make them able to hold and conceal larger items. The front pocket area could be extended by 4-inches in width and 1 to 2 inches in height. 2. Put pockets in the face of the inside divider to distribute the load better

I was initially impressed when I first received this bag a week ago. However, after using it for a few days I have decided to return it. I have since replaced it with the Timbuk2 Command TSA-Friendly Messenger Bag, which has a much better pocket and carrying handle design (but not as nice carry-strap design).  Cons:  1

 I couldn't pass up the good deal on this. The price was significantly lower than usual. I have also found it useful for when it rained all day here in Chicago and I switched it out for my usual leather messenger bag. The waterproof material on this is a nice feature

 I also would not recommend this bag for the gym. I would go up to size medium for that. I could hardly fit anything else in there after my women's size 10 shoes. It fits my work stuff just find though (essentials, notepads, folders, a book), umbrella

This is my first Timbuk2 bag and overall I have to say I am quite impressed, but not without some room for improvement. As a first time Timbuk2 bag owner, I am reviewing this mostly on its own terms, less so by comparing to the 2013 version. I ordered the extra small to use during my next trip to Europe. Great bag overall (but not perfect)

 While this is a matter personal taste, I like that this bag feels more like a bag and less like a floppy box (which the other ones felt like at times). The new material is LIGHT, though. The medium 2014 classic weighs less than the small 2013 classic. ***The lightness has been huge

It is my 3rd in a series of Timbuk2 bags I purchased seeking the perfect messenger. Here is the whole list:  1

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag 2013 (small, night blue/blue/night blue)- This was my first Timbuk2. I thought I wanted it to be small, but I found myself wishing it were bigger every day I carried it. Also, the colors (night blue/blue/night blue) were slightly brighter than I had expected, which was offputting. It was a pretty good fit for my fiance, however

.. not a viable option. And all the backpacks, totes and messengers, specifically made for art supplies have very mixed reviews and don’t even look big enough to hold everything

 There are also two buckles but they are made of plastic. If they stand up to use over time without breaking, I’ll up my rating.  Still a great purchase.
