Released a couple seasons ago to quite a bit of fanfare is Smith’s top-end 4D Mag. Building off the standard I/O Mag above, this goggle has an improved magnetic lens-change system and a slightly larger fit, but the big news is the lens shape. Called BirdsEye Vision, the lower portion of the lens curves inwards, opening up downward visibility by 25 percent (according to Smith). It’s hard to fully verify that claim, but the difference is immediately apparent when trying it on back-to-back with alternatives like the I/O Mag and Oakley Flight Deck. For those who put a premium on maximum field of vision—such as riders who spend a lot of time in difficult terrain off-piste or in the bumps—the 4D Mag is a nice option.

Why hasn’t the 4D Mag overtaken the I/O Mag as our top-rated goggle? The primary reason is price: there's no doubt it's a fun piece of tech, but visibility in general has become much less of an issue among modern, premium goggles. As such, many skiers will find it difficult to justify the $50 jump in cost (although the included hard-sided case is a nice touch). Moreover, there's a faint line and a small amount of distortion right at the curve in the lens (while skiing, however, the line is not noticeable).  You can bring a second lens if you know you're going to encounter variable conditions very easy to swap out there, and then it comes with a very nice protective case. I'Ll show a picture of that below as well, so i'm a big fan of it and it better be msrp. For this particular one is 320 us dollars. That'S a significant investment, though you are getting the best field of view and you're, getting two chrome pop lenses and a nice case - and you know these are

 What makes the 4d special as well is. The actual lens is incredible: it's got 25 more field of view, meaning i can actually look down. If you look right here, you can see the lens kind of curves inwards, so you can look down and you can see like everything, there's no frame in the way. There'S no foam in the way, it's just great field of view, 25, more than other goggles, i don't know which one they're specifically talking about

So the little combo of a manual clip plus magnetic is really nice plus, of course, they've got the signature Smith chroma pop, which creates better contrast in different low-light areas, so really cool goggle from Smith

 First and foremost, when they say 4d, they mean you can see out of the goggle like no other goggle has ever figured out, namely when you look on the bottom. The lens rolls over. So instead of like a big, you know plastic thing down below when you're. Looking down, you actually have clear vision down there

TL;DR is a big lens equals better padding placement on the cheekbones equals all-day comfort! 

For me, the visibility improvement alone is worth the upgrade. You might be reading this and be thinking your goggles are just fine, but trust me, when you put these on you won’t want to go back. The vision is that good. 

With ski and snowboard season wrapped up for most Utah resorts, it’s about time I made a judgment call on the Smith 4D Mag goggles so you can prep for your end-of-season deals!

I had a magnet come out of the frame on my 2 year old IO Mags and asked Smith how to repair. They sent me a warranty payment to buy new goggles! Outstanding customer service. I upgraded to the 4D Mag and paid the difference (only $40). I don't know if I would buy these based on the price tag and cost of replacement lenses, but what a difference they make! If you have money to burn these are worth the extra

Much larger field of view, incredible clarity and (so far) the lenses haven't scratched as easily as the IO Mag lenses (my one criticism of those goggles). The Storm Rose Chromapop lens is phenomenal in low and flat light situations

 In the end, we still prefer the $50-cheaper I/O Mag, as not everyone needs the added field of view. But the 4D is a close alternative, and we do like the inclusion of the hard-sided storage case. Another premium design to consider is Anon’s M4 Toric MFI. Stacked up against the 4D Mag, the Anon is a true “large” fit rather than the medium/large Smith, and we prefer the more natural color rendition of the 4D Mag’s ChromaPop lenses (although Anon’s lenses aren’t far behind)

As we touched on above, Anon’s magnetic, quick-change lens system is a bit faster, but the Smith’s is more secure with levers that lock the lens in place. And finally, the M4 Toric comes with a magnetic clip-in facemask, but we found it to be lacking in structure and easily sucked into your mouth when breathing heavily

 Compared to the 4D Mag, the Contact’s lens-change system is a bit harder to use (the push button-style release is less intuitive than the Smith’s levers), and the Zeiss lenses are a small step down in all-around clarity and optical quality. Like the Airbrake and M4 Toric above, the Contact is also a large fit, which can feel more cumbersome on the face. For $60 more, we think the 4D Mag is the better all-around performer, even without the boost in downward visibility. And for this season, Giro released the Contour and Contour RS (short for “reduced size”), which have a sleeker frameless build, toric shape, and more intuitive magnetic lens-change system for $270 (although we still prefer Smith’s ChromaPop optics)

 Clarity and Optical Quality Like most goggles in the $200+ price range, the 4D Mag comes with two premium lenses that can be swapped out depending on conditions. There are a range of ChromaPop options to choose from, but I opted for the Everyday Red Mirror (25% VLT), which also includes the Storm Yellow Flash low-light lens (65% VLT). Overall, like our previous experiences with Smith’s ChromaPop designs, both lenses provided fantastic clarity in a range of conditions both on and off trail. They do a nice job highlighting bumps even in shadows and have a very natural look and feel that’s almost HD-like

 Instead of getting a second low light goggle lens, their package included a bright sun black lens. This was not what was listed on Amazon as the second lens. Don’t know if that’s an Amazon problem or the sellers problem.
