Handle could be better

 Out of the box, the sheer bulk of the knife was the first thing I noticed - as many others have said, this thing is a beast, weighing in at close to a full pound. The grips are nicer than expected, rubber-like and with a slight give that gives a comfortable feel. I wish they fit better, as the tang slightly protrudes all around the handle. It's not uncomfortable, but I do wonder if that would be true once the knife was used for any extended period

  The knife was not sharp out of the box and as I was inspecting the blade, I noticed it was bent. As I looked down the spine toward the point, it curved a bit to the left. I put a straight edge against the knife to confirm, and it did show a curve. I'm not sure how it escaped factory QC

 Fortunately Amazon was superb in taking the return and getting a new knife out in a few days.  The replacement came, this time with a straight blade, though still not very sharp out of the box. The grind looks ok, but may need some work, which isn't shocking considering the price point. Like my previously returned knife, this one had the same same fit issues with the handles

  Overall, this is a good knife for the price, but it's not going to replace the Ontario SK-5 Blackbird as my primary knife in my emergency/bugout kit. It's just too heavy, and doesn't have the overall quality. Then again, it doesn't have the Blackbird's price tag. This is a nice knife for the price to keep around the house and should serve you well in most tasks

  The sheath is well made and has an added pocket that can be used for a small sharpening stone or perhaps a multi-tool...  In short, for this price range, it is a decent knife with some exceptional features

Beefy well balanced knife ...

 PROS: -1095 high carbon steel / full tang. Great for knives in a harsh environment, and full tang is a MUST. -At about 1/4 in. thick, this knife screams durability, and can withstand plenty of abuse

 -The grip fasteners. Now here where we split hairs, I'm sure. I believe a true "survival" knife is one you don't have to take care of or maintain often, if at all. With these little screws/ nuts holding the handle to the steel, that leaves room for oxidation and rust

 -Extra, removable mini cargo pouch on the sheath. I'm HUGE on more pockets, and this comes through!  CONS: -THE SHEATH!! Now although the knife itself is absolutely fantastic, the sheath leaves a bit to be desired. First off its just nylon with a plastic insert for the blade. Not a high quality nylon, but in all fairness

 edges are slightly off on some points and the steel doesn't even contact the grips in others, giving it a slight "warped" look. With so much dedication seemingly infused into the creation of this awesome blade, one would think the creators wouldn't skimp out on the details. -The grip fasteners. Now here where we split hairs, I'm sure

IDEAL FOR A RURAL SURVIVALIST, or B.O.B.

 I had a small Schrade folder from when I was a kid, but I haven't seen any since, so I thought I would test it out and if I hated it I could just exchange it towards one of the Beckers. The knife arrived beautifully, protected well in it's box, even though some textbooks in my order crushed it. The blade steel was clean and spotless, almost a bead blasted- gunmetal gray tone. Heavy, as expected, with a beautiful curve to the blade that resembles the kopis style on my CS Spartan

 I really had wanted a 0.25 inch thick blade, which the BK2 bears proudly, but unfortunately is shaped short and fat like a trowel to me. People's only complaint about that knife seemed to be the heft to it, even moreso than the BK7. The BK7 had the 7 inch blade size I liked better, but the thinner blade and was at the max of my price range

 Enter the SCHF9 It had the 1095 steel, the 0.25 blade width, and just shy of 7 inches (with 6 " of actual cutting surface).  One thing I was concerned about from the pictures was the retention strap and the plastic insert to protect the blade. It looked to be velcro, but the strap does have a metal snap on it, which I liked. Schrade must have read the complaints about the blade bouncing in the plastic protector as well, because the first time I attempted to seat the blade into it, the blade physically separated a small portion of plastic holding the sides together. I had to shake some plastic slivers out after, but from then on, it felt fairly snug

Just what I was looking for.

 1095 steel, for the price this is a plus since this steel is pretty good for outdoors/survival tasks, will need to be taken care of to avoid rust though. Looks and feels tough, very thick spine, don't think it will suffer any damage when chopping or battoning. Price!, for the size and steel material this is a great price point.  Ok now for the CONS: The balance feels a little off, I can't quite describe it but it just something you have to feel for yourself

 Having said the above in order for you to enjoy this knife you have to see it for what it is, an affordable made in Taiwan tank/beater knife for medium to heavy chores with good steel and a not so good aesthetic finish. This is a great option for a BOB or remote/primitive backpacking trip where wood processing will be high on the list of priorities and you decide not to brig a hatchet or axe. Hope this review is helpful in making your decision.

Let's be clear here... This knife is definitely one of the best bargains going! I don't think you can get a more heavy duty knife for this price guys

 Why is this important? Well, a common complain from owners of this knife as well as the knife I received, is that the edge grind can be uneven causing the tip of the knife to be off center.  I had to spend a little time on my sharpening stones to center the tip of the knife, but I was willing to make that concession for a knife at this price.  3. This is kind of related to #2, but the knife does not come sharp out of the box in most cases

 So expect to have to sharpen it before your first outing with the knife. Once again, no big deal. Every knife owner should know how to sharpen and maintain his/her blades anyways!  4. The sheath is not the highest quality here guys

 But honestly, you could do A LOT worse at this price! The sheath is definitely very sturdy and should serve you perfectly well. The sheath also has a small sized pocket on the front that can be used to hold any number of things such as a small sharpening stone, maches, ferro rod, lighter, compass, etc. The pocket also has the added benefit of being detachable if you decide you would rather remove it.  All in all, I think this is a great value knife! Your getting a full quarter inch thick blade made from 1095 high carbon steel

Just received my knife and it is an amazing blade for the price, came sharp right out of the box. The handle is comfortable and the sheath fits well. The file work on the spine is a nice touch. I will use and abuse this knife and not worry because it didn't break the bank and yet I am proud to carry such a well made thing

The stitching on the sheath looks nice at first until you look closely. Lots of areas where the threads are just waiting to get snagged on something.

Bought this sub-$20 knife with extremely low expectations, and boy did it live up to them.

Final thoughts; I'm glad I didn't spend more on this than I did. I'll never trust this knife as my only blade on any outing due to questioning the quality of the steel and questionability of the hardness, but if I break it, I won't cry over it.
