Schiit Modi 3 DAC to a Schiit Valhalla 2 amp to Sennheiser HD6XX open back headphones.

Open back or closed back headphones for gaming? What do you all use?

 It can sound harsh and it can have a bit of a digital sheen to it. Now, with that said, only the most revealing of electronics. Headphone speakers are going to give you that, otherwise, it's just going to sound, very detailed as far as the low end, the bottom, the base uh. It doesn't feel like it's as emphasized as the top end, but even with the sanskrit being a little bit shinier

 It'S a fantastic product. It is, i think, really someone really has to step up, because i still don't hear a ton of difference between the modi and the smsl su-8s, the topping ex-5, the son-cause from a sonic standpoint. Yes, there's variable outputs, different roll-offs, maybe bluetooth, balanced outputs things like that. That you're not getting from the modi but from a sonic perspective, they sound very similar to me and comparing the modi to the bifrost

 You can actually get one of those fancy: five volt, lower noise, switching power adapters and use it on this. If you want to and then on the front, there's a three position: toggle switch, oh yeah yep, a three position: toggle switch to switch between the inputs, which are digital optical, digital, coax or usb, and that's pretty much it there's no on off switch or anything. I like it, i like it, i like it a lot um, so it comes in silver or black. I dig the black because i think it's pretty good

 Little road goes on my desk and i really enjoyed it and for whatever reason i decided to sell it and get a different headphone amp and it sold within about five minutes, because obviously everybody likes the skit, the smsl sanskrit tenth mark ii. Great name has the exact same inputs on the back, so there's an rca out coax in optical in micro, usb in and then a power in. So you can actually power this off of like a laptop or computer, or what have you or you can run separate power as well. Both the modi and the sanskrit use akm chips, ak 44, 93 for the sanskrit and the ak-44 90 for the modi

 I think it's just called amazon hd. You have that and then, on the back here you also have rca outputs and you can plug those directly into your power speakers which that's what i've done. Also you can plug it directly into a receiver, an amplifi or a pre-amplifier, etc. So it gives you a lot of versatility

 So i actually have two of these one is hooked up to my windows 10 laptop and that the dac is then fed into a fosse audio class d amplifier. And then i have a couple of the eclipse: r4 uh 41m bookshelf speakers and that's why it uses kind of a reference system when i'm listening to different things. But i also have the amazon echo link and i have another one of these in black. By the way they're available in silver and black, i have that hooked up to the echo link via optical audio out of the link going into the dac and then out of the deck

Review - Schiit Modi 3+ Best $99 DAC For The Rest of Us!

 This is a $ 20 bit of cable from a company called blue jeans. I recommend them for all sorts of entry-level cables if you're a bit unsure about whether they make a difference or not. This one's a terminated, B and C here and normal coax here, very stable, cable. I'Ve had this one for years, it's fantastic, [, Music, ]

 So this piece of is called the Modi and according to Norse mythology, Modi was the son of Thor and his name means brave. So the Modi is just a duck digital in can log out. So we've got three digital inputs. We'Ve got a spit of coax Toslink and a USB and a second USB here, four five volt power

 It does make an improvement. Is it worth the 50 bucks? Well being, is it's 50 % of the cost of MODY? Some people may say no, but then, on the other hand, I can't think of another hundred and fifty dollar DAC that would better the MODY with this power supply. Forget about the i5 power supply. Let'S just go back to the Modi as a standalone DAC with its own power, brick and USB cable and 99 bucks

 This was the 99 dollar version and to get their of use. The AKM 4490 delta-sigma chip because, as jason stuttered who's, one half of told me rocky mountain this year. The reason for his company's success is that shit's cheap, not that the chip of choice is the final arbiter of a DAC sound. I mean the saber sound only really exists on high five forums, the output stage and the power supply in a DAC matter

The Schiit Modi 3 DAC is a $99 bargain

 The Denon sounded more dull while the NAD has more detail and better bass. I've yet to try hooking it up though my Schiit Modi 3 DAC.

I wasn't sure if it'd be much better than the CD player it replaced (30 year old Denon DCD-1500), but it really is. This one was built in 2006, so the 20 year newer DAC inside definitely is better. The Denon sounded more dull while the NAD has more detail and better bass. I've yet to try hooking it up though my Schiit Modi 3 DAC

New to me NAD C521BEE CD Player (kinda matches my amp)

I went into the amp and DAC shopping process with the view that all solid state amps should sound about the same and that DAC quality was a load of crap after a certain point. That said, I wanted something that looked really cool on my desk and was a bit curious if I would hear the slightest bit of difference vs no difference at all.

The sound is much, much clearer, much more detailed, altogether fuller sound particularly in the mids, smoother, punchier bass, and bigger sound stage. It's just altogether much more musical and enjoyable to listen to.

My Topping D90 and A90 stack arrived in the post today!

You might have seen my previous post where I upgraded from a Sennheiser HD660S to a Hifiman Arya, and noticed a Schiit Magni Heresy / Modi 3 stack in the background. Well here is Part 2 (hopefully also the final part) of that upgrade process!

I went into the amp and DAC shopping process with the view that all solid state amps should sound about the same and that DAC quality was a load of crap after a certain point. That said, I wanted something that looked really cool on my desk and was a bit curious if I would hear the slightest bit of difference vs no difference at all.

The Heresy and Modi 3 have excellent subjective and measurements based reviews and so I really wasn't expecting even a moderate difference, and only if I listened very very closely.

So I turned the Topping stack on and plugged in my Arya (single ended) thinking I'd listen for a bit then laugh at audiophiles and their pricey products (that look incredibly sexy though), and... Confession time... it turns out that I was the one that was full of shit (or Schiit as the case may be).

The sound is much, much clearer, much more detailed, altogether fuller sound particularly in the mids, smoother, punchier bass, and bigger sound stage. It's just altogether much more musical and enjoyable to listen to.

I honestly can't believe how big a difference it made to the sound quality. Whilst it wasn't as big as moving from the HD660S to the Arya, it's not that far off. To put this in perspective, for me, the improvement was more easily noticeable and more quickly noticed than going from the Ananda to the Arya in A-B testing.

Bear in mind, I'm definitely not an audiophile so please take my opinion with a massive grain of salt. I also didn't blind A-B test them so this could all be confirmation bias (yes, even though I thought it wouldn't make a difference, it can still be confirmation bias). I suspect there has to be a fair amount of confirmation bias here as I'm upgrading from a good solid state stack, so there shouldn't be as big a difference as I'm experiencing.

Take this as just another anecdote in the litany of opinions on audio gear.

Finally, looks-wise they are clearly killer. That's why I bought them and they don't disappoint in that regard. That black aluminium look!

Topping D90 + A90 stack

It is the best device I have ever added to my system and has lifted its performance to a much much broader depth and higher plane.

First time I heard the quality pick up, I was speechless

 But, as you guys are probably tired of hearing, it definitely makes no difference in what i'm about to say anyway. So this specific version of the modi is the three plus, not the multi-bit variant. This is just a plain, jane, modi, 3 plus dac with a ak-4490 chipset inside that for lack of a better or fancier way of putting it does a pretty good job at translating and transforming your digital signals into stuff that you can feed your amplifiers. For your speakers and your headphones and that type of stuff, there's really nothing else to spice up here in terms of how to present the modi and that's sort of the point at a starting price of 99 for the three plus the modi is made to be

 This shiny, smooth, silvery tone that has been sort of brenda's trademark. Look for a long time before they started messing with you know black and gray, and black and red finishes. There'S the small branding on the front side, together with the led that indicates power and a three-step switch that toggles between the different sources for the actual dac back side. You'Ve got source options, one of them being usb, it's micro, unfortunately, but what can you do? Optical and coaxial digital inputs? There'S a second usb for power if you want to use the included cheap, 5 watt cell phone charger, that they include in the box like a small wall wart and a pair of rca outputs, and that's it we're done again simple and elegant, easy clap

 So why don't we just you know dive in properly and actually review it right, right, [, Music, ]? Okay, then, let's talk modi for transparency. It was brenda who sent both the modi and the loki mini, plus that we just looked at for review. But, as you guys are probably tired of hearing, it definitely makes no difference in what i'm about to say anyway. So this specific version of the modi is the three plus, not the multi-bit variant

 But i guess it's also nice to know that if you want to add to what your entry level gear already gives you you at least have the option within the same overall family. So in a quick recap, excellent, build small form, factor, easy, simple and elegant excellent. Sound quality and for what it delivers, it's actually a bargain of a price tag. It'S got basically no drawbacks and your setup is definitely going to be better off with something like this, rather than not having it, which means this is yet another thumbs up for brenda

Doesn't work with coax input

  The E30 can draw operating power over its USB connection but the IPhone doesn’t put out enough amperage, so I needed to use the DC power port connected to a standard 12v receptacle.  Size is compact enough to fit in the (very shallow) center console of my 2012 Corvette with enough room for the various wires and cables, and the remote.  Out of the box it outperformed the similarly priced DragonFly, which had sounded fine to me but by comparison sounded much thinner and less open. The mids from the E30 were brighter and more prominent at first but they smoothed out with a little playing time

I bought the E30 to use in the car, to play streaming Hi Res audio (Amazon Music HD). I’d previously used a DragonFly Red, but it’s limited to 96khz/24 Bit Depth. That covers a big chunk of Amazon’s current Hi Res (Ultra HD) library but there’s some 192/24 material in there as well. The DragonFly down-converts to 96/24, but I wanted to be able to play 192 tracks native

  Overall a fantastic addition to the car’s audio system, and a good universal purpose portable DAC in general.

 Bass extension was improved over the DragonFly, and the sound overall is more detailed and open from the E30.  The unit itself feels solid and well built. For some reason in my application the display reads “192” regardless of the actual track sampling rate, but the difference between 24 Bit 44.1, 96 and 192 is obvious
