Looking for a solid, rideable, 29er full suspension trail bike that also has a modern frame/geometry that I can get away with upgrading as things break or by feel as time goes on. Looking to get a new bike so I can ride it for a good handful of years.

Giant Trance X 29 3
Commencal Meta TR 29 - Love the look and frame but the origin is lacking in specs off the bat.
GT Sensor Sport

Looking to progress more in jumps/drops. Not trying to set PRs on climbs but also not doing any lift assisted parks so I'm pedaling everything. Midwest riding so a lot of ups and downs which is why I'm focusing on the Trail category.

Max $2500 on a full sus bike/frame to ride for 5-6 years

 So I'm riding the the S build so comes to the Fox 34 up front and the DPS shock Outback crisps up there is on the XO one bill that comes with a pike and I think that that's the way to get the bike or at least find a way to get a pike on the front of this because the back of this bike feels deep. do the rear end feels amazing on this thing. Tank it out Matches the Fox 34 on the front. in my opinion that on the lower flow your trails, this rides almost as good as the Ripley I'd say let's talk about climb I Mean this is no longer like your quintessential climbing cross-country bike

 they're just super fun, really fast. So getting out on this tall boy for today I've just been licking my chops to get out on this so Chris was nice enough. Chris is the manager and kind of runs the shop over there. It's cool ride and Draper kind enough to get these bikes and come out with me and see what all the fuss is about about this new towel boy for so uh yeah, if you're local, head over to Go Ride and Draper talk to Chris or Manny Just excellent guys to work with and no bike business real well can get you set up

 But uh yeah, climbs good. Let's get up to the top here and see what this thing descends like. Whoa, How about a breath? The GoPro price effect probably doesn't show the steepness of that little trail, but gets kind of steep. I'm five foot eight riding a size medium today

 but I don't like tall boys? No problem. I've tried it in the the trail mode on that Fox DPS float shock and in the open position and both are really good. Come SPECT with a little bit bigger tires. the Dhf my max is up front and DHR two on the back

2020 Santa Cruz Tallboy 4 Test Ride & Review

 Yeah, it was really like using my heels a lot. like just like pumping this bike a lot more than I usually do. It doesn't have to be, it doesn't have to be a downhill Thrasher though. which is what I like about it

 Thankfully, Santa Cruz has a pretty thorough guide online for citing this bike up and I found it to be pretty spot-on so you did - Yeah yeah.  I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10. So now that we've taken a look at some of the features and designs of this Trek Marlin 5 let's go ahead and find out what this bike weighs. The actual weight of a Trek Marlin 5 and a size medium comes in at 30 Oh Point one Eight pounds.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.
