They may be a bit less common than they used to be, but the Santa Cruz 5010 is a great reminder that 27.5-inch wheels are here to stay. This recently redesigned mid-travel trail bike rolls on "fun-sized" wheels and has 130mm of rear travel paired with a 140mm travel fork. Its updated geometry brings it in line with modern trends and makes it a confident and well-rounded descender with a distinctly lively and playful demeanor. The smaller wheels and short rear center make it feel eager to get the front wheel off the ground, while the supportive VPP suspension design provides a nice platform to push off of. Deep stroke performance is also excellent and gives it a more-travel-than-it-actually-has feel. The pedaling platform is steady and the steep seat tube angle lines the rider up in a comfortable and efficient seated climbing position. Flip-chips in the lower shock mount also allow you to adjust the geometry slightly for your preferences. The XO1 RSV build we tested is outstanding, albeit quite expensive.
We found little not to like about the new 5010. It is worth noting, however, that compared to 29-inch wheels, the smaller hoops don't carry momentum quite as well and can hang up a little more easily in rock gardens and technical terrain. The flip-chips are also quite challenging to access, though that isn't something most riders will be adjusting very often. That said, if you like smaller wheels or simply turning every trail into a playground, the 5010 is an excellent option to consider. 

The recently redesigned, mid-travel, 27.5-inch wheeled Santa Cruz 5010 is a playful trail bike for fun-loving riders. With 130mm of rear-wheel travel, a 140mm fork, and modern but not extreme geometry, this quick-witted ride had our testers seeking the fun line, riding the back wheel, and popping off every bump in the trail. The smaller wheels and short chainstays make it easy to get the front wheel off the ground, yet its moderate length wheelbase, reach, and slack-ish headtube angle keeps it stable at speed and confident on rougher, steeper descents. The VPP suspension design provides great mid-stroke support and big-hit performance, and a super steady pedaling platform. A properly steep seat tube angle provides a comfortable upright seated climbing position and direct, efficient transfer of power to the pedals. Our only real complaints are that it doesn't have the best small bump compliance and that 27.5-inch wheels don't roll over obstacles or carry momentum quite as well as bigger hoops. Yes, the XO1 Reserve build we tested is expensive, but there are three more affordable options to choose from. If the trail is your playground and you're more concerned with having fun than going fast, then the 5010 was made for you.

That can basically do it all, but it's not gon na be the fastest bike. It'S not gon na be like my stomach jumper two-niner here. The straight-line speed is not where he excels

 A large would be a little better, but just totally around that was really nice. Keep that smooth aligned and she go straight - Oh God, of course, I'm the slow stuff. Oh alright, penalty! Timing. Let'S see how the 50:10 puddles just dinner, OTB, I'm like going one mile an hour what the hell but jumping this thing is like so light I think, having a size

 It'S not gon na be like my stomach jumper two-niner here. The straight-line speed is not where he excels. It'S in the tight trails, a lot of switchbacks a lot of burns where the bike really performs well, a couple things that i didn't notice at the bike park at holland bike park is that when this the train got a little steep. It gave me that scary moment that i was gon na go over

2019 Santa Cruz 5010 CC | Test Ride and Review | Can the 5010 handle a BIKE PARK?

 On top of the pedals and with the new lower link design. It'S pretty efficient new, lower length, vpp design never touched a shock yet minimal bob kind of feels like the tall boy in this regard. Here, it's pretty good technical, climbing suspension's, pretty active, providing me with plenty of traction, but you could tell you i think it's just a wheel. Size thing i do get hung up a couple seconds back back there

 It'S just supposed to be a playful poppy and i'm here to find out if it's still true to the 5010 name, so we're just going to climb up make some uh descents hit some jumps and see how the 5010 handles it all. So, for 2021, 5010's got a full makeover, completely updated, lower, longer slack treatment on this size. Large frame, a couple geo figures: it's got four 29 millimeter chainstays and that chainstay length varies with what size bike you have. So that's kind of cool keeps you more centered

 I think the new 50 10's for you, but if you're looking for speed and um stability on the descent and um, something that crushes the kom's in the climb, i probably look somewhere else, but super fun bike.  For me, i cut these down to 780 and sram g2r. Brakes. Surprisingly, [ Music ], this new 5010, definitely climbed better than his predecessor, big fan of a steeper seat. Tube angle, you know 76 77 is like my sweet spot, so you just like kind of ride

2021 Santa Cruz 5010 | Test Ride & Review | Still the BMX mountain bike?

 Train stays so fairly well balanced, and that is a quite a short back end. You also get a sixty six degree head angle, which is reasonably slack and pretty much on par for the rest of the bikes interlock of the year [ Music ]. So the reason why the 5010 appears in every iteration of trail back of here is that it's a true trail bike. It'S not trying to be a little enduro bike and it's not trying to be a big beefy cross-country bike

 But it's never quite a winner for one very good reason: it's a great fun trail bike, but it's not very well priced. There are various versions of the 5010 on offer, both alloy the regular, see carbon and the CC carbon as well. You also get twenty seven point: five plus or twenty nine inch versions of the bike we had the alloy r+ build, so it came with the plus tire option in 27.5 inch diameter and it comes in at three thousand four hundred and ninety nine pounds: [ Music ] Santa Cruz released a new version of the fifty ten later on in 2018, and it didn't have a massive amount of changes from the previous version, a few tweaks here and there, especially around the Beebe area, where the shock is mounted

 You get a minion dhf and at the back, there's a slightly faster rolling recon surround also provide the brakes, and here it's the guide T with 180 ml rotors front and back now the T is the most budget version of these brakes and we'll talk about that. Later, on finishing kit is a range of Race Face and WTB stuff, it's all fairly reasonable, there's also a Race Face effect, 150ml drop post and a WT v, silverado saddle, which didn't cause any problems for any of our testers. Overall, this bike comes in at 15.2 kilos for a size large, which is fairly heavy [ Music, ] santa cruz offer the fifty ten in a wide number of options, there's a low frames and two different versions of the carbon ones as well

 If there's a carbon frame, maybe you'd just about get away with it, but it's an alloy frame with the heaviest Eagle cassette out there. If you do an upgrade to a light one or when this wears out - and you want that extra ten to fifty to three inch from the GX or above you've got a replace the freehub as well. So this is really fundamental to why the 50:10 never wins. Trail bike of the year: it's just such poor value for money

 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10. So now that we've taken a look at some of the features and designs of this Trek Marlin 5 let's go ahead and find out what this bike weighs. The actual weight of a Trek Marlin 5 and a size medium comes in at 30 Oh Point one Eight pounds.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.
