 Our Only other complaint is about that 35 gold fork that never felt as supple or as active as some of the other forks on these value bikes.. All Right,, now that we've fixed our little filming mistake, it's back to Tucson for the final verdict. (upbeat music) - Let's wrap this up by talking about who the salsa Timberjack XD 29 is for

 On This bike compared to the Diamondback I feel like I was between the wheels - Totally. - Like I was way more stable, but with the Diamondback on those tricky climbs, it felt like I was perched above and like way more tippy where this just more stable. - And So, even though the salsa is a 29er, it still has really different geometry from the Diamondback. - Yeah, geometry that works well

 So Which of those makes the most sense? Well You could save $300 and do that SLX bike. The Timberjack XT Comes with the nicer MT501 brakes that really impressed us. And It's 35 Gold fork should, outperform the 35 silver TK fork on the less expensive bike. So yeah, I think we choose the Timberjack XT

 It's not super noteworthy. Like The geometry is pretty standard for a hardtail. It has 29 inch wheels. It has like solid parts

 While this might be appropriate for exceptionally tall or short riders, it isn’t necessarily true for those of average height. You might hear or read online that if you’re under around 5’6”, you should stick to 27.5-inch wheels. And while this might have been the case when these wheel sizes were in their infancy, most people can now find well-fitting 29ers

 All else equal, if you’re tall and enjoy relatively straight singletrack with few hairpin turns, we’d wager you’ll be happy on a 29er. However, if you’re fairly short and enjoy tight and twisty trails, you might prefer 27.5-inch wheels. But don’t let your height be the determining factor—you might find that you favor the stability of a 29er regardless of how tall you are

 While riding the 2019 Timberjack on technical trails was pretty fun, there’s only so much you can (safety) do without rear suspension. As a result, the bike really shined on smooth and more buffed-out trails. The more aggressive WTB Vigilante tire provided a ton of traction at the front—especially on sandy or blown-out sections—while the WTB Ranger rolled fast on the rear yet still provided plenty of grip. I found myself railing berms, popping off trailside lips, and manualing down the trail—what a good time it was!  This here bike is the Gx, the 29er Gx which is the top end which comes in at 24.99 but the bike also is available in a frame set and even comes in a single speed option. so I'm just shy of 510 and Salsa recommends medium for my height and this bike actually fit me really well. If you look at the first generation and second generation Timber Jack side by side, you'll notice that they look pretty different

 So from time to time I kind of did wish that I had that rear shock because you know, when you're climbing and you've got that rear shock, it kind of remain keeps that wheel planted to the ground. That would have been beneficial, especially on some really chunky climbs that I dealt with. but I definitely got used to it on this bike. and I actually believe that the length of this bike kind of separated the front from the back

4 degree head tube angle as opposed to the 67.6 degree headtube angle on the previous version. So to compensate for that long front center, they had to steepen the seat tube angle to make sure that you maintain a nice balance on the bike and be able to kind of shift around the bike as well as just maintaining a nice pedal efficiency. This is an aluminum frame made out of Salsa's proprietary double and triple butted aluminum tubing

 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10. So now that we've taken a look at some of the features and designs of this Trek Marlin 5 let's go ahead and find out what this bike weighs. The actual weight of a Trek Marlin 5 and a size medium comes in at 30 Oh Point one Eight pounds.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun!
