A friend and I are planning on conducting a sort of journalistic investigation into an unresolved mystery from my hometown in rural Alabama.   


We'd like to frequently record our conversations as we're investigating so that we can get key revelations and epiphanies on tape. This would include a range of scenarios: talking while walking through the woods, driving in the car, at both of our computers sitting at a table, or even talking on the phone. A good example of the scenarios I'm envisioning is the circumstances of the Trojan Horse Affair podcast (which is a lot of conversations between the two reporters as things are unfolding).   


I am a total amateur when it comes to audio engineering. What kind of equipment (whether that be a microphone or otherwise) do I need for this?  


From my cursory research, I'm thinking that we should purchase a field recorder (I'm eying the Zoom H5) for situations like car rides, impromptu interviews with key subjects, or brainstorming at our computers.   


Is there another type of microphone I should be considering? And what would you recommend using when conducting planned interviews with an interviewer and interviewee?

Looking for advice on types of recording equipment I should purchase

 On the top of the unit you can see that we have a 3.5mm TRS input appropriate for connecting standard wired lavalier microphones and then you've got a nice little clip here that you can use to clip the transmitter onto your belt. What’s your go-to wireless lav mic these days?

 You can go ahead, unplug the lavalier and just hook them on. That's something I was doing at the aquarium because Dylan and I were mic'd up, but I wanted to get a few audio bites from Carrie. So I went ahead and unplugged this through this on her bag and was able to capture audio and switch it back and forth between different people very fast. The only things I can see going wrong is if the wedding is an all day thing, you want to make sure that you're plugging these in between breaks

 And also when everybody gets drunk and the DJ's blasting the music, you may run into issues with clipping with all the loud sounds going on. Donald says those wireless go sound a lot better with the lavalier go mic. Yeah, I would agree with that. That's what you're listening to right now is the transmitter hooked up to the road go lob

 And you know what else is great? You are for staying to this part of the video. So remember to hit like and subscribe right under me. Not actually physically, but actually just under the screen. Do that and you'll get a gold star and the next time you see it in the night sky, we'll know it's yours

 We also have a TRS cable to plug the receiver into the camera and three USB-C cables. So I'm going to go ahead and hook these up. Rode Wireless Go II Review | Incredible Wireless Mic/Lavalier! ...But not quite Perfect

 If the device does encounter issues, I will update this review. But if this is all you are reading, assume the product continues to work well for me  The product is incredible value and I would dare say, an absolute no brainer for anyone with even a slight inclination towards recording decent audio. What you get for the price simply can't be beaten, in my opinion

 They even include a cute carry pouch, TRS cable, and 2 wind muffs in the package.  I tested the built in mic to my own lavalier mic plugged into the unit and the sound quality is very good. The lows are slightly more rolled off on the built in mic but subjectively I actually like the way my voice sounds on the built in mic a little more (I have a slightly lower, nasal sounding voice). This is far beyond what i expected for a built in mic and will be using it over my lav mic from now on in most situations

 Yes, it technically works, but it's a little heavy for a shirt and no one wants that thing in the picture.  IMO, this system doesn't work without having the mic as well. And for ~$300 you could get a full system that takes batteries and comes with a wired mic. I think it's a little disingenuous to call this a lavalier without the actual wired lavalier mic

I got the Wireless Go II for weddings since it was so highly recommended but so far, it's interfered with two wireless microphone setups during a ceremony and a reception. To be clear, it caused interference in the DJ's microphone system which was amplified to the audience. Obviously that's unacceptable at such an important event.

The left hand light on one of the microphones is not working. The protective plastic cover was pulled back and dirty and the light doesn’t,f work.

One battery indicator light is not working.

Affordable to me will most likely not be what affordable means to you. I would recommend the Rode Wireless Go II mics, one receiver can be paired to two transmitters and can be used via USB into a computer. Once you have the Receiver/Transmitter pair picked out that you like, then you can go into finding compatible lavalier or headset style mics.

Equally important would also be that one is not limited to only one microphone but can also operate two or three microphones in parallel. Sometimes a good friend comes over to cook for the stream and here it would be great if he had a microphone too.

Wireless microphone for live streams?

I’m glad they have the backup recording because these lost connection indoors frequently about 10-15 feet away from subject so there was no choice but to use the backup. Output has a whine when connecting to sound recorders making them almost useless for professional use since this makes monitoring sound impossible. Rode Central is a mess! Downloading one file at a time NEEDS TO BE REMEDIED! Absolutely an awful unnecessary chore to get your sound off of these things. How are multiple file downloads not available yet?

Competition: The closest thing to this that it competes with near the same price range but for nearly $100 less, is the Comica BoomX series be it the BoomX-D2 at $180/$190 or the BoomX-U2 Which is about $250. Now the only thing you're sacrificing in the FAR superior BoomX-D2 line is range, BoomX-U2 has the same 200M range. The D2 has like 100M due to it having an internal antenna where the U2 has an external arm. I like the D2 better since it's smaller than the RODE, has WAY BETTER sound quality built-in or external, easier to pair, a way more robust menu system (U2 has more features as well), more granular control over gain and for nearly $100 less if you go with the D2

  Cons: -Battery has seeming ZERO Overcharge protection. Had this thing on a charger for over an hour and it never showed how much was charged, time left, or ANYTHING relevant. Then when you powered it on, it seems to be missing a sliver of juice since the green they use to fill in the battery icon doesn't go to the tip of the battery icon and I don't know if I didn't charge it long enough or what. BUT I thought 3hrs was long enough on a greater than 300mAh charger

 AND in something that I think I paid $250 for, and is now $270, HAS ZERO excuse to not have a proper charging circuit in it. -ANNOYINGLY unintuitive, out of the box, if you use ONE mic with this since you only have ONE person, it will spit out two channels just repeating the left or right channel you're using. There is a way to spit out ONE channel, I managed to do so, but haven't figured out how to do it. Then linking these back up after trying to futz with settings is also a pain, and seems to be random chance

Now, (per the seller) I’m not able to return them because I no longer have the original packaging. So I’m only left with one usable mic
