We know what you’re thinking: REI? A climbing pack? The answer is a resounding “yes.” In fact, the Flash 18 is the lightest and cheapest model on our list yet still manages to include a bunch of useful features. Like many other follower packs, the Flash 18 has a top drawcord that can be opened and closed one-handed, a backpanel that can be taken out and used as a sit pad, removable hip and sternum straps, and even daisy-chain attachment points and an ice axe loop. For $40 and just 9.5 ounces, that's a whole lot of pack.

But despite its impressive weight and price, the Flash 18 does have its downsides, most notably in terms of durability. The thin nylon construction pales in comparison to more rugged follower packs like the Rock Blitz and Multi Pitch below. It is not made to be hauled up routes, won’t last long in chimneys, and is bound to get ripped if you’re loading it down with sharp climbing gear on the walk out. But for $40, the Flash is undeniably an excellent value, and its feature set is surprisingly functional for climbing.  What's nice is these little loops on the outside and I use these for attaching a lot of different things like when we're hiking so I'll use a carabiner and attach like sometimes a shovel. If I think like it's gonna be a very long day hiking, we might need to use the restroom. Um, I've also attached to my micro spikes. If we're hiking in places with snow or ice, I'll just clip them on here outside the bag

 There's a pocket in here for hydration pack, which I don't use. I kind of prefer not to use hydration packs, but you can slip the hose out here and there's a little um loops here that you can kind of loop the the hydration pack goes through, so that's pretty handy, especially at this price point. Uh, there's a loop in here too. You could tie the top of the hydration pack too

 So I did end up getting this backpack. I thought I was gonna end up replacing this one for everything, but um, it ended up only replacing it for uh, hiking and kind of, uh, day trips and stuff like that. Uh, this backpack ended up not working very well for bicycling or motorcycling. Well, it works okay for motorcycling, but not bicycling because when you're when you're bent over on a more kind of aggressive bicycle, this thing up here will rub against the back of your neck

 And um, after you use this for a while, I mean, it's not great for Kevin, you're carrying heavy loads. These straps are very minimal. They are breathable, which is nice. They don't get hot, but um, they're not the most comfortable system for hiking

REI FLASH 18 PACK - My favorite budget day pack

I use this pack for commuting by bike. I had last year's and had to exchange it because the Velcro that held the back pad in just fell apart and every time I reached in my hand went back to no hands land. They fixed that with this one, and added an even easier (!) drawstring top, outside pocket, and two inner slip pockets. It's such a great size and is so lightweight

It carries everything I need and because it's sort of just a bucket, you can just throw stuff in there

 It still has the chest buckle with the whistle and so these are just really light straps. Really breathable. You can actually kind of see through it here. It's her if you use this when a good camping when I been around to town and I don't really want to carry a purse

It still has the chest buckle with the whistle and so these are just really light straps. Really breathable

REI Flash 18 Bag Review

 We like it as it is light, for the dimensions, for the comfort as it is renforced in the back and for his inside pocket with a zip . The zip pocket is well placed because when you carry your backpack on your back, you can carry your day pack in the front and have easy acces to your keys or money in the zip pocket.

Nice day pack, but made with bad fabrics

Unlike other reviewers, I find this pack to be in the small side. It's great for quick hikes to hold a small jacket and sandwich, but doesn't hold much more than that. I've been trying to make a crag-bag out of this, but I can't even fit my harness and shoes in here, let alone jacket, food, other gear, etc. 

I'd recommend this for light hiking (like up to half-day trips), but for hiking in weather, moderate gear needs or longer hikes this pack is lacking.

Small pack, comfortable but lack for full day

 Most backpacks don't have cleaning instructions. However I have to return the backpack because one part of its design does not suit me. The shoulder straps seem to be made so as to fit a person with broader shoulders. Of course when a backpack is filled with items it can fit differently than if it is empty

 The stitching and reinforcements are of good quality work. Of course I have not tried the item on a long term basis but it seems well made. One common problem with backpack shoulder straps is that they are made of material that is not breathable and can make you perspire more on a hot day. Besides that, the shoulder straps can absorb sweat and then themselves develop a bad smell

 The mesh-like shoulder straps are great for ventilation. The material seems rugged enough for the lightweight fabric that it is. The stitching and reinforcements are of good quality work. Of course I have not tried the item on a long term basis but it seems well made

Very good in different ways but design could use improvement

I bought this to take on my trip to NYC - just needed something lightweight that I could fit a bunch of stuff in (souvenirs, hoodie, etc). It was perfect. And the top closure is nice because nobody could pick-pocket me.

I took it on a day hike to a river this weekend and it held up great. I just wish it had an outside pocket for a water bottle. I have a camel pak to put in it, but I also carry water for my dog and it was annoying to have to take the pack off each time I needed to get water out.

Nice little lightweight pack

 I originally bought this to keep in my personal carryon for flight to Turkey but may just use this for my carryon! The zippers are sturdy and the fabric durable. It comes in lots of colors but I like what I ordered/received. I highly recommend.
