broader and more varied

in 2010s Red Dead Redemption
by a massive margin.

There are snowy peaks and

There's the muddy
livestock town of Valentine

with its wooden buildings and rusty charm.

And then there's the
imposing city of Saint Denis.

of modern extravagances

and environments seamlessly

 Get to where you're headed, watch some canned dialog, then mount up again and follow someone off on some mission. For a real thrill, pick up someone from the side of the road and take them on your horse somewhere way off of your path.  Technically and creatively it's very well done. The graphics, the voice acting, the attention to detail of things like the numerous weapons you can purchase are all very good

 Plus the game seems very stable. I don't think it's locked up on me yet.  The combat is a bit frustrating. On story missions it's usually fairly manageable, but the random encounters can go horribly wrong quickly

 If I'm on horseback I've learned to flee from the gunfights, dismount (horsed combat is brutal), then go back on foot to challenge your enemies. If you're killed you re-spawn and can't find those same enemies. So, you can't even get revenge or try that same fight again. You simply missed your chance

  The combat is a bit frustrating. On story missions it's usually fairly manageable, but the random encounters can go horribly wrong quickly.  If you like space games, if you like fantasy games or super heroes, this might not be your cup of tea. There are some tap, tap tap parts, but it's not constant like a fighting game or something. But there is a lot of fighting and shooting. And Red Dead tries to make that as realistic as they can

 And there's always more to these missions than meets the eye. It's great stuff, right out of Kurosawa and the sixties saddle operas folks. And your main missions are going to take you everywhere form the turn of the twentieth century Dakotas to New York, to Kentucky, to New Orleans, to Florida, and all around the country. So it's definitely not all just robbing trains and outlaw camps all the time

  Horses are very important too. You'll have to upgrade your horse as the game goes on to complete missions, though you will develop a relationship with some of them, particularly your first, and not want to sell or let them go. And yes you can drive a horse too hard and kill it. You actually have to treat the virtual horse like a real one

 I don't see how anybody wouldn't. And there is a lot of open world stuff, I mean a lot, for those of you like myself who are fans of that. One important skill that Arthur has to develop and teach is herbalism, which is fun, but it does slows things down for those of you who get nervous whenever you aren't hitting a button. And there's hunting and fishing which are also important at times
