PSB Alpha P5 vs Ultimate Ears Hyperboom

These are serious speakers - nice quality construction. They are presentable for being in open view in a classy room, and totally do the job for sound. More than you'll need for indoors, for sure. They're pretty big - about a foot tall by maybe 9" deep and 6" across the front, and weigh at least 10lbs each

We also have dual passive three-and-a-half inch by seven and a half inch passive radiators shooting out of the back of the speaker which sounds incred...

The P5's thunder out the bass. Blast out the highs and really kick butt with the mid range. The look is very deceptive. With the right pre amp you have classy looks with power that is rich with sound

First, I tried the JBL Boombox 2. I returned it. To my ears, the bass was overdone and thuddy, drowning out the mids and highs. Also, the sound was very directional, meaning that my ears had to be directly in line with the speaker (vertically and horizontally) to get some presence of mids and highs

I like the very strong magnets that hold the grill in front, making them good looking with or without the grill. Also, the tweaters are protected, so nobody can push them in with their fingers. I personally didn't like the logo on the speaker grills, but it was easy to remove. The remaining adhesive came right off with a bit of cleaning alcohol

Another thing that distinguishes it from previous models is that it has a square shape. This was explained to us by UE's product manager, Doug Ebert, who said that the company wanted to “deliver the best possible listening experience with a proper stereo image”, rather than ensuring 360-degree sound with a cylindrical build. 

I hate the twist type connectors. It's harder to get your fingers in there and it's harder to connect the wires. I actually had one wire pull out twice when trying to hook them up. At this price point I wish they had the easy spring loaded clamp connectors

My happy medium is the [UE this has a 3.5 mm port AND an optical port, and sounds good enough (to my ear) for pretty much any music and movies
