 First things first, the old Spyder, let's just move that out of the way. The old Spyder, obviously the power meter, that was 50 grams. 50 grams. Whereas the actual Spyder from Power to Max, 160 like we put in that earlier video

 Now, the Power 2 Max Type S, the battery is kept in here, this sort of lump. This sits just about flush with the crank, so I've never had an issue with my foot hitting this at all. It uses one of these batteries. You can see that

 Now this unit here, the Cannondale version, weighs about 185 grams. So you're shoving 185 grams on your bike. You know, it's not the end of the world, but there are lighter power meter systems out there. However, like I say, the trade-off is this thing just works

 So, that's the first plus point. The battery lasts fucking forever. Second really good point, I've had absolutely no issues at all with creaking. It's not come loose at all

 I've sprinted on it extremely hard, climbed loads on it, bunny hopped over drains and just giving it a lot of stick. So this is my review. Well, first of all, let's explain what it is then. Power 2 Max is a German company who make power meters, hence the name

I have had some Vector 3s in the past and basically I had to send them back because they were useless and didn't work so I wouldn't buy the Garmin Raleigh XC pedals just yet maybe for my next power meter for my mountain bike I will look at the pedal based power meter but not yet and I'll give it another 16 months or so before my Power2Max fails again. It's been through water, it's basically been through normal mountain bike activities, so it does need to be a robust unit. It works in the cold, it works in the heat, it's temperature regulated, so it should be consistent no matter what the weather, and of course it's also waterproof. So now what you've been waiting for, or not, the cons

 It's worked well for those 16 months and I have got a replacement as you've seen a crash replacement it could have should have been under the warranty robustness is a question mark and so is the battery cover but it's been accurate it's been fit and forget and I'm very happy that I've got it back on my bike because I know it's accurate and I know it'll work well. Now I would have put value for money in the pros but I think the price of the Power2Max has gone up I think it was about eight or nine hundred dollars in Australia when I bought it maybe 400 or so US dollars and now it's about eleven hundred dollars Australian and 590 I think US dollars so the value for money has gone down it's equivalent now to the Garmin Raleigh XC100 so if you want to buy some Garmin pedals power pedals then you can get them for the same price. Eco, I believe, stands for Economical, because this is the trimmed down version of the NG model on features and on price. Quarq's DZero platform has proven to be one of the most accurate and reliable power meters on the market, offering independent measurement of right and left side power with +/- 1. 5% accuracy. Recently, Quarq decided to upgrade the power meter chassis by integrating SRAM's DUB technology into the crank arms. The result is a stronger, stiffer, and lighter crankset that more efficiently transfers the effort from your legs into forward motion. But in order to actually measure power, you need this Quarq DZero DUB Power Meter Spider, which is designed to pair with the new DZero DUB crank arms. Once you have these two components, all you need is a set of chainrings and a DUB bottom bracket and you're ready to hit the road. Along with these hardware changes comes a new firmware that employs MagicZero auto-calibration technology. With MagicZero, the system automatically calibrates itself as you ride. You no longer need to backpedal to zero the power meter, and you no longer need to manually calibrate your head unit either.  It doesn't have Bluetooth compatibility, it doesn't have automatic calibration, it doesn't have user serviceable battery, so that's not really a 2017 option. But then you have the new power to max NG I think which is almost a thousand Euros just for the spider with no cranks. So that's again a lot worse in value with a lot more money for no real increase in performance, and you also have the rotor parameter the twin power with its strain gauges housed in the crank arms. But that's really I think around two or three hundred euros more expensive than the quark again with no real gain

 and if you look at some other power meters of the similar category I think you're always better off with a spider-based option because then, well, it houses the electronics better. It gives you more accurate readings in my opinion. we've got a more controlled way of strain there, whereas on crank arms it's usually a bit more complicated and things could go wrong. And then there are pedal based parameters which are not really where they should be at this day and age

 So complete power measurement is what's important. You want to have the repeatability and the precision in your total power numbers, then some other options pioneer that's quite an outdated system. also really expensive. What else? So these are pretty much all the competitors I can think of now and all that I have looked at because I could have bought any of these, but I decided to go for the quark for the new quark

 Previously I have been using a Stages parameter, and nowadays you can get one of those to fit these red carbon cranks, but the problem with that is the price, because you see this red D0 unit retails for 929€, which is quite a good price, it still seems a bit too much compared to the Stages, but then again Stages cost around 700€, and you have to get the cranks as well, and even if they come up to the same price in the end, you still only have a Stages, which is a left only meter, and it is nowhere near as good in terms of data as this Quarq unit. When you are upgrading your parameter or your bike, changing to a new bike, I think it is definitely something you should keep in mind. If you have Shimada cranks, then the Stages definitely is the easiest option, but maybe if you already have a bike and it came with Shimada cranks, you could just sell those and get a complete crank, and I think in the end you should come up a bit cheaper than with a separate Stages left arm. And again, this is a far superior unit in terms of, although maybe not accuracy, since I have been riding this, I have established that my left-right speed is 5949€, so the accuracy of the Stages in my case is pretty good, but still of course not as good as when you are measuring the complete power

 So I did this on both of my units, it worked out the first time, it was super easy, so not much of a problem there. This RAM support stuff was also quite quick to respond, so I resolved this issue quite quickly, and experienced zero problems since then. Quarq DZero power meter long-term review

 Fast forward a few years and the Llama lab with testing, power meters, trainers, power accuracy and everything in between. I've been keen to get my hands on some of the newer units from Quark including the latest revision the Dub version with Magic Zero to see how it stacks up. In recent times I've been using the Favero Asio Meduo power meter pedals as a good baseline. They seem to provide good accurate numbers as has been echoed many times online by other users

 Over to the technical specifications of the unit that I've been riding which is the Quark D0 Dub power meter Spyder. This unit comes in either a 110 or a 130 BCD depending on the chainring size you choose. I'm riding the 130 edition. It has Dub crank compatibility from 165 through to 177

 That's looking good. And my final test is the out of the saddle heaving on the bars. Really putting pressure sideways on the power meter. We found some power meters like their pressure put straight up and down on the pedals but that's not really how we ride in all scenarios

 So 110 watts there for that single outside sprint. I need to do more sprints to know exactly what's going on there maybe with a few different pedal sets as well. Everything else there average cadence was within a few rpms you might get a few of those depending on the starts and stops but look overall as a whole with all the history that I have in 2019 testing other power meters that thing is brilliant. So my conclusion it just works and that's how it should be
