Everything comes back into line 185, 182 Within a few watts Jumping inside now to the llama lab test up against the Elite Direto XR and the ACM duos and the Njiko Just riding along before we get stuck into the llama lab test full We have 119, 118, 117.9 all within a watt or two That's no problems at all given the ups and downs on that drilling down into the llama lab test short for this I wasn't seeing any drifting whatsoever with this unit So I skipped on the 10 minutes and switched them back to fives for this and you can see there the numbers line up Very very well 233, 232, 231.5 All good into the sprint And as close as you will see for such a short sprint there So the power to max 1299 the ACM is 1308 and the Elite Direto It's just a few watts under there at 12

 The unit that I've tested on the bike this week is the road NG Eco Which I will call the NGco. NG standing for next generation, which is released a few years ago now. Eco I believe stands for economical because this is the trimmed down version of the NG model on features and on price The specific version that I have is a 110 BCD 4-bolt rotor crank compatible version Which I match with Shimano Dura-Ace chain rings with a claimed weight of the spider itself the NGco of 158 grams We will put that to the test. Onto the specifics of this unit It's a spider-based Power Meter

Absolutely Looks like to be well within the plus or minus two percent of accuracy there And can I use this power meter as a baseline to test other power meters against absolutely I can the downsides I had to come up with some downsides of this I think the battery door cover is probably the only downside of this unit They're five dollars each to replace and they're kind of vulnerable I guess if you're using this as a gravel bike and you're a bit sketchy with How you ride the trails or go through sticks or something? It can be knocked off So as a roadie not an issue, but something to be aware of with that battery cap design So that's a wrap from me on this one the power to max ng eco spider base power meter It was great to finally install something on the bike that I was happy and confident with from pedal stroke one through to pedal stroke Few thousand down the road.  I did check for new firmware versions There's none for the unit that I have so it's always a good thing to check for firmware Anyway, I'm also hoping within this code is some updates to the iOS stability when updating firmware I didn't have the best of times updating my NG code with iOS. It worked a lot better on Android Okay, here we go in the llama lab connecting to the power to max NG code with the new utility Takes a few seconds to connect That's got the connection just pulling up all the information over Bluetooth And There we go. We have battery state and we have a few other things on the screen We can click through so let's get started by clicking on device information Everything there is in check. So back to the main menu and we'll click on upgrade now I've already clicked on the trial period enable and that was 14 minutes ago You can see that on screen and that's given me additionally balance smoothness and torque which weren't there as part of the standard offering with The NG code power and Bluetooth were always there, but I now have those three additional data points for the trial period So the trial period is enabled we can jump over to settings and we have a few more settings So we have auto zero on we have ant plus on power adaption We'll click on that changing the calibration we can scale up to plus 15 percent or we can go down to negative 15 percent Yeah, nobody's got time for negative 15 percent power reading

 It doesn't have Bluetooth compatibility, it doesn't have automatic calibration, it doesn't have user serviceable battery, so that's not really a 2017 option. But then you have the new power to max NG I think which is almost a thousand Euros just for the spider with no cranks. So that's again a lot worse in value with a lot more money for no real increase in performance, and you also have the rotor parameter the twin power with its strain gauges housed in the crank arms. But that's really I think around two or three hundred euros more expensive than the quark again with no real gain

 and if you look at some other power meters of the similar category I think you're always better off with a spider-based option because then, well, it houses the electronics better. It gives you more accurate readings in my opinion. we've got a more controlled way of strain there, whereas on crank arms it's usually a bit more complicated and things could go wrong. And then there are pedal based parameters which are not really where they should be at this day and age

 So complete power measurement is what's important. You want to have the repeatability and the precision in your total power numbers, then some other options pioneer that's quite an outdated system. also really expensive. What else? So these are pretty much all the competitors I can think of now and all that I have looked at because I could have bought any of these, but I decided to go for the quark for the new quark

Quarq DZero longterm review - the best power meter on the market?

 Previously I have been using a Stages parameter, and nowadays you can get one of those to fit these red carbon cranks, but the problem with that is the price, because you see this red D0 unit retails for 929€, which is quite a good price, it still seems a bit too much compared to the Stages, but then again Stages cost around 700€, and you have to get the cranks as well, and even if they come up to the same price in the end, you still only have a Stages, which is a left only meter, and it is nowhere near as good in terms of data as this Quarq unit. When you are upgrading your parameter or your bike, changing to a new bike, I think it is definitely something you should keep in mind. If you have Shimada cranks, then the Stages definitely is the easiest option, but maybe if you already have a bike and it came with Shimada cranks, you could just sell those and get a complete crank, and I think in the end you should come up a bit cheaper than with a separate Stages left arm. And again, this is a far superior unit in terms of, although maybe not accuracy, since I have been riding this, I have established that my left-right speed is 5949€, so the accuracy of the Stages in my case is pretty good, but still of course not as good as when you are measuring the complete power

 So I did this on both of my units, it worked out the first time, it was super easy, so not much of a problem there. This RAM support stuff was also quite quick to respond, so I resolved this issue quite quickly, and experienced zero problems since then. Quarq DZero power meter long-term review

 Fast forward a few years and the Llama lab with testing, power meters, trainers, power accuracy and everything in between. I've been keen to get my hands on some of the newer units from Quark including the latest revision the Dub version with Magic Zero to see how it stacks up. In recent times I've been using the Favero Asio Meduo power meter pedals as a good baseline. They seem to provide good accurate numbers as has been echoed many times online by other users

 Over to the technical specifications of the unit that I've been riding which is the Quark D0 Dub power meter Spyder. This unit comes in either a 110 or a 130 BCD depending on the chainring size you choose. I'm riding the 130 edition. It has Dub crank compatibility from 165 through to 177

 That's looking good. And my final test is the out of the saddle heaving on the bars. Really putting pressure sideways on the power meter. We found some power meters like their pressure put straight up and down on the pedals but that's not really how we ride in all scenarios

 So 110 watts there for that single outside sprint. I need to do more sprints to know exactly what's going on there maybe with a few different pedal sets as well. Everything else there average cadence was within a few rpms you might get a few of those depending on the starts and stops but look overall as a whole with all the history that I have in 2019 testing other power meters that thing is brilliant. So my conclusion it just works and that's how it should be
