Got this in the black, well constructed as expected with Patagonia. Only reason I gave it a 4 stars. Is the black on the model is none of the colors as advertised for sale It's straight black or blue as not shown on body. Great bag though, many trips could be had with this backpack

 It should do you find it mildly rainy conditions, Large zippers have a great action feel, really solid, and I love the Larks Head tied zipper pulls, a very nice touch for quick access. A side pouch will fit a water bottle inside. Straps help cinch the whole pack down, keeping contents from shifting or bouncing around internally. The shoulder straps are well padded in the top, mesh is vented for better air circulation a nice consideration when taking gear out on a hot day

 Where I'm a little torn is on the idea of this being a laptop compatible bag. Having recently played with bags like STM's Drifter where I feel there's a bit more attention paid to that laptop compartment and significantly more back padding I Feel The Surge is a good traveling backpack for carrying gear and for people who might occasionally need to strap a laptop to their backs. For folks who need to tote their notebook computers everyday, however, there might be some better options out there. I'll of course, leave some links down below this video where you can find more info on the Surge to and where you can shop them online as always

 It did a decent job of keeping my 15-inch gaming laptop from slamming into my back, but this is probably the area I Need to criticize the most, having played with a couple tech bags around this price point. I Would definitely appreciate more back padding. There's almost no internal padding protecting a laptop or tablet from bumping into other items in the main compartment. Lastly, the bottom of the laptop sleeve does have a rail of padding to protect your gear from a drop, but it's not the chunky estai played with in this price range either

Background: I bought this specifically because i have a 17" work laptop that is both heavy and difficult to fit in ANY bag. I brought the laptop to REI and this was basically the only bag that fit it into the laptop compartment (as opposed to just shoving it in the main zippered part). I'm female and the women's version of this bag (even though claiming it was for 17" laptops) did not work, so I was stuck with the men's version.

Today on reviewing two, we've got the North Face Surge 2 backpack. Why the Surge 2? Well, I wanted to carry on size pack for traveling that could also accommodate my 17 inch monster of a laptop.  The version i have here is the all black, but you can see all the different options that they have on the company site and then moving into the materials on the exterior. You have a rip, stop nylon that feels pretty lightweight, but like it's still going to hold up well to rougher usage, it also feels like it's going to offer a nice amount of weather resistance, and then you have ykk zippers all throughout the bag that have worked Really smoothly continuing along the outside on the front, as i mentioned earlier, you have webbing that's going to allow you to attach additional accessories with something like a carabiner. This is normally the spot where i would attach my hero clip, but you have two rows of this. Webbing one on each side, so a lot of different ways that you can attach items and then you have on the bottom of the bag, compression straps that are going to allow you to hold something like a yoga mat or maybe a jacket

I just placed a little manicure set that i like to have with me when i'm on the go and then on the right, i placed this usb power block that i use for charging my macbook pro and my other devices when i'm on the road moving up Along the front of the bag, you have another spacious compartment

 You can see my 13 inch macbook pro is getting kind of swallowed up by the compartment, but the sleeve is very well padded. I love that it has the soft fleece lining to help prevent against scratching it's a suspended compartment. So if you place your bag down a little bit harder, your device is going to be well protected and so pulling my laptop out now with the compartment empty. You can get a better look at the inside and so plenty of padding on both sides of the compartment, and it comes up enough to be able to hold a thicker device

 This is also the weakness for hiking. For my preferences, the use of multiple compartments leaves no room for one main compartment that I would use for a jacket and lunch. I also use this as my on-the-plane pack when I travel internationally because of all of the small stuff it can hold - everything from an i pad to a travel ukulele. I don't use it as a tourist pack while walking around in towns because I find it to be to big and too heavy

I use this bag mainly as a commuter bag, as I work in multiple locations and tend to haul around a lot of stuff.

  A couple of downsides: I would like the straps to be just a little bit wider. Since I haul a heavy load, the weight does not distribute to a wide area amongst my shoulders, causing only a small amount of shoulder to do a lot of the carrying. Also, I'm not sure if this is just me, but when I stand my backpack up next to my desk, it keeps falling over! I end up leaving it on its back eventually. I also wouldn't mind the pack having a little more room
