It’s not always this easy to narrow down competing models and make a top pick, but among windbreaker jackets, the Patagonia Houdini Air is head and shoulders above the rest. Building off the beloved Houdini below, the new Air takes the old formula but adds a ton of breathability and comfort to the mix. The jacket pairs a double-weave liner with a standard nylon shell, offering great wind protection and a softer feel than any other design in its weight class. In many ways, the Houdini Air is the Swiss Army Knife of windbreaker jackets and makes a great option for hiking, running, mountain biking, and a wide variety of other outdoor uses.

Keep in mind that with such a thin shell and air-permeable weave, you do give up some of the bombproof protection of a 100% nylon jacket like the original Houdini. That said, we took the Air out in 60mph, knock-you-over gusts near Patagonia’s Cerro Castillo and felt sufficiently sheltered from the storm. And although the jacket’s DWR coating is impressive, a thicker shell fabric (like that of the Black Diamond Alpine Start below) will offer better wet-weather protection. Remaining one of our favorite options for when keeping weight low matters most is the Patagonia Houdini. This piece has been around for years, which has allowed Patagonia to fine-tune the details to get a seriously impressive mix of function and weight savings. The Houdini compacts into a ridiculously lightweight 3.1 ounce package, sure to please even the most hardcore ultralight enthusiast. Despite this absurdly low weight, the Houdini is still impressively wind-resistant and withstood every adventure we wore it on, from climbing and mountain biking to hiking and boating. 
Of course, this impressively thin layer is a bit see-through, particularly in some of its lighter colors. This makes it not the best-looking model we tested.  I always throw it in my vest, just as a fail-safe when I ran Zion and I got extra cold at night. I threw this on under my heavier jackets, and it was just one more layer of insulation between my skin and so there you have it. The Patagonia Houdini, I love this shell. I would highly recommend it because it's so light and versatile, I always pack it in my vest for my hundred-mile runs if there's any chance of rain, or certainly at night as just an extra layer

I prefer the snug fit which makes it an excellent companion piece to a shell or insulated jacket. For reference I am a tweener sized human, size S Nanopuff and size M Houdini both purchased in 2011. Excellent breathability, cut, comfort.

 Considering its weight, Patagonia nailed all the right features. You can cinch the hem to block out wind at the waist, the half-elastic cuffs seal nicely around the wrists, and a single adjustment at the hood allows you to tighten it down effectively. Finally, the slight drop hem at the back is a nice touch for a little extra coverage. All in all, the amount of versatility you get for the weight is truly remarkable

 And on our trip to Patagonia, I found myself keeping the Houdini close and wearing it daily. It cut the wind nicely when we stopped for lunch while backpacking, and I hiked in it if the weather was cool or the wind was particularly rough. Considering its weight, Patagonia nailed all the right features. A bit larger or the size that you usually wear don't get it smaller because it's a tight fit I'm wearing something under

Are you always cold whenever you go out in the rain? Then The North Face Resolve 2 is the ideal rain jacket for you. It's a simple, athletically oriented coat with a drop hem to cover the top of your pants and a warm fleece-lined neck that feels like a cozy hug. It's solidly waterproof in moderate precipitation, with a velcro storm flap to cover the non-waterproof zipper. With an extra layer of mesh inside, this jacket is warmer than most, making it ideal for running errands in a cold fall downpour. When it's not raining, the Resolve is still a good choice, as the hood can pack away into the collar &#40;making it thicker and even more cozy&#41; and wide elastic cuffs can be comfortably pushed up your forearms to free your hands. It also comes in many colors that we are big fans of.
Yet all this warmth comes at the cost of breathability. The TNF Resolve 2 has no vents and is so insulating compared to the rest of these rain jackets that it's our last choice for a running garment or cross-country skiing layer. The forward-facing flaps over the pockets are also a bit awkward to use, though not a dealbreaker. While we like the comfortable width of the elastic cuffs, they do prevent the sleeves from falling down over your hands &mdash; which may be exactly what you want them to do for extra protection on a particularly cold day. And when it comes to packability, this thick coat is bulky and doesn't stuff into its own pocket. It's better suited to hanging in your closet than being bundled on a backpacking trip. Still, for protection against cold and rain, the Resolve 2 is a solid option at a reasonable price.

Runs small

I took this coat with me on a recent trip to London/Berlin/Paris and it was exactly what I needed. Clean-cut, just stylish enough and it kept the rain and other elements off while walking around the city. Recommended for warmer springtime weather, but definitely one of my favorite purchases in the past year-- totally easy to stow in my suitcase if not needed and great if running quick errands. 🙌
