I have the 24 and do love it, but also have mixed feelings. The laptop pocket is both awesome and shitty. It's genuinely large at 2+ inches deep, which makes it actually useful for pouches sitting up at the 3" top as second brain/quick access pocket.

 The straps are thick and pre-formed and do not flatten well at all. The body cavity is tapered for carry comfort and doesn't pack especially efficiently with cubes and pouches. Something more rectilinear would be better. It also doesn't stand up on its own *at all

I've recently become a big fan of Mystery Ranch after traveling with their 55L Mission Duffel for a couple years. I'm now looking for a daypack that can work well as a carry-on, but also work on the trail. I'm considering the Urban Assault (UA 21), Urban Assault (UA 24), and even the 2 Day Assault Pack (2DAP). I don't think I need the capacity of the 2DAP, but really like the extra organization offered like the more flexible external water bottle pockets and the extra lid pocket. I also like the side access for the laptop, although that feature isn't necessary.

Does anyone have experience with these bags? Did you consider the same alternatives? If so, why did you choose the one you did? Have you been happy with that choice and/or would you choose one of the other models?

I am pretty set on getting something from this brand, so not really looking for other recommendations at this time.

BONUS QUESTION: Also might get a "Just In Case"/packable daypack. Anyone use the MR In and Out 19 or 22?

Mystery Ranch UA 21, UA 24, or 2DAP for Travel and Trail

 I've taken other Osprey bags on adventures sailing the Greek isles, trekking on Icelandic glaciers and "roughing it" in the south of France - and they've never missed a beat. This particular bag actually seems even sturdier than those previous ones - I guess I'll find out post pandemic! It's well built and large enough to fit quite a lot of stuff - the harness distributes the weight nicely and the backplate helps spread the load as well.  While not negatives, there are some things to consider with this bag. First, note the dimensions - it's a tall/narrow bag (vs short and wide) so make sure that will fit both your body and the stuff you intend to carry

 If those two considerations meet your needs, then this is a great bag that should truly last a lifetime.

Osprey Makes (Yet Another) Nice Bag - Look at the Measurements Though!

 I carried my laptop and tablet around in the laptop sleeve and did not have any issues with any of my electronics breaking or getting scratches The side pouches are nice and i was able to put a 32oz hydro flask in there without any problems This backpack has been great to us and will be our number 1 bag when we travel. Great product!

 We took it on the sandy beaches of Hawaii and other places. First thing i want to highlight is that the backpack materials are really high end materials, ranging from the zipper they use to the fabric. It has given us peace of mind when traveling because the stuff inside the backpack is only accessible from the top lid. The zipper is a heavy duty zipper and we have not had any issues with it breaking or snagging

If you're looking for just a backpack just to be a backpack though, and to and from the office, maybe to the gym, to and from class, this bag is gonna fit your needs very well. As long as you don't expect it to be feature-rich and have all these pockets and you know what you're getting into, you're gonna love this bag. Now to the cons of the bag

 It's still just that Cordillera fabric and I found that it doesn't breathe very well on your back and it's kind of a buzzkill for me. My next con is gonna be the laptop sleeve is not padded I Don't really know how you could market this bag for you know, everyday use where people are taking their laptops here and there and the only thing protecting that laptop is a tiny piece of nylon separating that in the main compartment. It's just a recipe for disaster, especially with the crap that we throw in the main compartment. along with laptops running upwards of like $3,000 nowadays

 You know you can unzip it, throw whatever crap you need to grab really quickly just because you don't wanna put it in the main compartment because stuff can kind of go to the bottom and it will get too in a second. And what I really like about it is the zipper on it. That thing is super heavy-duty I really don't know how you can break it and I know how you guys all know that once the zipper goes, it kind of the bag falls apart. so Topos done a really good job of putting like a really beefy zipper

The Best Everyday Bag? | Topo Designs Klettersack Review

 Here you got that nice topo bright, yellow inside really lights up the bag, so you can really see what's at the bottom, so you don't lose anything and then at the top we have another quick grab pocket here. This one kind of goes over the top of the bag, depending on how much you have it packed out. If you got these tightened down more, it's gon na lay a little bit flatter here, so you can have more access to it. Otherwise, it'll kind of be behind the back your neck, which is you know, not a bad spot for a more safety conscious people just so it's harder to get into it, while you're wearing it

 Then you're gon na have on the classic, and it's just got like a kind of like slick feel to it. So the water should bounce right off of that. But again as with all these the same sort of organization, you have you know the stretchy water bottle pockets and compression straps, although they are metal on this one. But it's all sort of the same and then in this middle pocket

 One and two, and then a small, a couple, little loops in front of that. If you want to like clip your keys to one of these just so they don't fall to the bottom of your pocket and then yeah. We have a couple smaller loops here on this other side, so a little bit of organization they're still not too much kind of keeps that minimal style while still having that more luxury feel and the back panel and shoulder straps on these are noticeably by a large Margin much more comfortable, it's really more thick dense, padding all over versus just having this kind of more like mesh. You know crunchy material, this real thick foam and so you'll kind of notice

 So, just a nice little day pack, we don't really need too much. As you can see, we just have a some mesh padding here, not the thickest, not the densest, but it'll get the job done. Unless you really load this thing out, then you may be wishing it had a little bit more, but for normal day to day use these do just fine and then up top. We just have a little grab handle here
