  I've seen solutions like this, never on a $10 knife though.  As for the locking mechanism, I think they really hit the nail with this one, it happens automatically as the knob is spring loaded and you never have to think about it.  My advise, if you're an occasional user who's not relying on the knife for heavy duty work, buy it and you won't regret it.  If you're a pro user, there are other solutions out there that are sturdier and more efficient, but not for $10

Great Knife, Good buy - but...

Used one of these knives for a long while and bought a second on Amazon for a backup/lender unit. Right way noticed that the molded plastic blade holder on the new unit was loose but did not worry about it. First week on the job, the blade and plastic holder fell out on job somewhere, couldn't find it, $10 down the drain because too late to return. If your little black plastic blade holder doesn't click in sharp and tight, return right away

Sturdy, well-designed utility knife; Locking mechanism not for heavy-duty use.

This is definitely on the hefty side. I like that because it stays in the office and it makes it feel substantial in your hand. Depending on your use case this may be a negative. The deploy/retraction mechanism is smooth and solid

 So considering the fact that this is still the exact same price as all those other entry level knives but it's a full tang, it's forged, it's VG10 steel, it's clad in stainless steel, all of these other little things, it's hand made, I think it's really a no brainer to get the Shun Sora if you want an entry level set of knives. This is a video where I show off the Shun Sora Knife Line and explain a bit more about it.

Essentially, the Shun Sora is the "budget conscious" Shun line¬— it is meant to be an entry level set for those who don’t want to invest too much.

Amazingly enough, however, it still uses VG-10 Steel (~61 Hardness) sharpened to a 16 degree angle like the Classic and Premier lines! It also has a stainless steel layer wrapped and welded around it that gives a gorgeous “wave” design to the blade as well as makes it extremely resilient to stains, rust, and pitting.

 Some people complain that the polymer handle feels cheep, but these knives are perfectly priced for what they are. The polymer grip is comfortable and its profiled it such a way that it looks great.  I purchased the Santoku, 8" chef, 6" Chef, Utility, Ultimate Utility, bread knife, and pairing knife.  Do not put these knives in the dishwasher. When you finish using them. Hand wash them in soap and water. Hand dry them really good and put them back on your knife rack

 It's a terrible rocker-chopper. It's not a good roast slicer; it's far too short. It's not an effective bread knife for anything other than baguettes. It's not a boning or fillet knife
