Best Trail Mountain Bikes of 2022 - GearLab

 Now, the first day i was really struggling so turns out the narco rataline website, spec sheet suggests 760 bars, 40 mil stem 20, mil bar rise and sure enough. The stock bars and everything on there are totally different 780 width, 50 or even 60 length stem and the bars are super low. I didn't feel very dialed on that first ride and, furthermore, i really don't like using the word review in any kind of bike video unless i can actually spend you know at least a few weeks or whatnot riding something in this case. I have two days on this bike and all the parts are stock and they're, not parts that i ride the parts that i generally ride, i'm used to and i've experienced them on multiple different platforms of bikes, so i kind of whoa builder line, keep them as Constants throughout my little ride, reviews or whatnot phew, nice yeah, thomas

 Once again, this is not a review video. This is more of an experience. Shall we say little jump? I had a great time riding the optic and it's a good fit on these flow trails, but i'll be 100 straight up. If i had the choice between a short travel bike, whether it be the optic, the ripley or whatever, 120 mil travel and shorter bike versus something that's more longer, travel like the norco sight, the ibis ripmo, the rocky mountain altitude or even the instinct

 All we really did was swap on the bars and stem from my personal bike. The sizing is now correct. Roller coaster. This optic compares directly to my personal ripley, i'm running a 140 fork on my ripley and if my wtb tires it's at a 65 degree head angle now the way the two bikes feel on the trail are a little bit different

I rode the Norco Optic!

 The bike has excellent geometry, really forward thinking. You got that steep seat, tube angle, slack, head tube angle, kind of everything. I'D say most consumers are going to be looking for in their next bike. Its all there uh, also there's a suspension tune itself, its really dialed great

2 % faster than the other bikes.. For me, this happened to be my fastest bike and it was two different days of testing those there's lots of variables, but I put down my quickest time as about 2.5 % faster than the Pole

. It'S a 125 mm travel trail bike with a 140 fork upfront, that's rolling on 29 inch, wheels. All right frame details its pretty straight forward., There's not a whole lot of craziness here

2020 Norco Optic Review: Short on Travel, Not Capability | Pinkbike Field Test

 It'S kind of interesting for a 480 millimeter reach. This thing feels like you, could take it up just about any tight mountain switchback without a problem. I appreciate how they also spec this bike with fairly narrow tires. These two three five schwalbe's are definitely pretty small compared to what most bikes are getting expect with these days, but it gives you kind of like a surgical feeling

 Out of the trail, spike's got the tried and true gx drivetrain. That always feels good. Also comes with these four piston shimano brakes, unfortunately with resin pads and rotors, but you still get that nice kind of grabby shimano feel which accentuates a bike like this. The super deluxe that comes on the back of this bike is like the smallest little super deluxe

 It just feels so composed so who's. This bike for this bike is for somebody who wants to do long, pedally adventures, and they still want the most capable bike that they can get in that category, and i definitely haven't ridden a 125 millimeter bike that feels this capable ever. I just feel like even the trails i've been trying to get it to flinch on on galbraith. Aren'T enough, so somebody who's looking to do some aggressive stuff, but wants a smaller bike that you know gives a little bit more back when you're pumping on the uh

 This feels really stable for a 125 millimeter bike. Pretty plush feels like it's soaking things up quite nicely: yeah wow, that's quite a plush feeling rear end yeah, i mean definitely a super stable bike, especially considering the amount of travel and yeah like when you. When you pump it there's quite a bit of support. It'S nice that you can lean hard on these lower volume tires without them, rolling it all really rewarding bike to pump

 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10. So now that we've taken a look at some of the features and designs of this Trek Marlin 5 let's go ahead and find out what this bike weighs. The actual weight of a Trek Marlin 5 and a size medium comes in at 30 Oh Point one Eight pounds.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus

I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.
