* **Tracking/visibility:** Her pack has reflective material, but she also wears a bear bell to help track her during our hikes if she goes off trail, and a blaze orange vest during hunting season picked up on sale from Petco. At night she wears a [light-up LED collar]([URL REMOVED] **First aid:** I added styptic powder, vet wrap (cannot recommend enough), tweezers, and benadryl with her in mind, but they're all honestly quite handy for humans too.

While I am especially curious about how people keep their dogs warm and their shelter choices, I am also just interested in seeing their overall setups and baseweights.  I feel like this information could prove very helpful for other ULers, especially beginners or new dog owners, who want to hike with a dog as well. Also helpful: your dog's weight, age, breed/type, and also whether your dog is short- or long-haired. Feel free to share a photo, too! :)

Dog People, Can I See Your Lighterpack?

We'd set the alarm for 4am so that we could get a good head start on what was alleged to be an early 11am storm front and so were glad to wake to a clear sky and bright half-moon crescent. After a bleary breakfast and an unfortunate sharting episode from yours truly (curse you, [freeze-dried dinner selection]([URL REMOVED] we were stoked and on the proverbial road by 5:30. The sky was lightening up and the first 1/4 mile to lower Maclure lakes was briskly invigorating, with the lakes [proving]([URL REMOVED] to be [glorious.]([URL REMOVED] I was a little sad the rain had prevented us from sleeping up on their shelf

**Where:** A quickie Tuolumne-area loop centered around doing the off-trail Simmons pass. Up Lyell, over the pass to Bernice Lake, down Rafferty (with a side-jaunt up Vogelsang Peak). 

 The sky was lightening up and the first 1/4 mile to lower Maclure lakes was briskly invigorating, with the lakes [proving]([URL REMOVED] to be [glorious.]([URL REMOVED] I was a little sad the rain had prevented us from sleeping up on their shelf. We skirted the east side of the lakes up and over medium-sized boulders till we reached a fairly contiguous 30\* slab section that more or less followed Maclure creek up the path of least resistance. It was [fun scrambling]([URL REMOVED] as the sun started its climb - slab + sticky rubber 4eva

 The next few hours were spent comically hopping from tree grotto to grotto in an attempt to find the dryest shred of space in which to perform our warming jumping jacks and eventually eat dinner. Since we had to stop hiking around 2:30pm, there were many hours spent literally staring at tree bark and pondering the merits of our rain gear and preparation.

Looking for a good 2p tent

 there is room to put the bag outside in the vesitble but the fly doesn't come down that far.  I wanted small and light. This is small and light.  I got it on sale

 I love the design of this tent and it’s weight despite it weighing 2 ounces more than specified on my scales. This tent came recommended by someone who hiked the PCT with one. I returned it. I don’t know if I’ll purchase another

Inspect the mesh carefully

 I.e., each end of the tent has six separate anchor attachments and they all attach differently—it’s almost as if they were designing this tent as they were sewing the very first one together. There is one oversight that is much more important than these small things I am complaining about and that is… at the peak of the tent, near the single pole hub, the fly and the mesh touch…this just happens to be where condensation will accumulate for sure and will in some cases cause you some trouble as the accumulated water will come right back into the tent… yes, I tried tightening up my set up but to no avail- it will become a problem! Personally, having backpacked for over 55 years and having helped design and test lots of outdoor gear to include tents…I think that sometimes we have become more interested in saving weight at any cost no matter what the functional outcome may be…in my humble opinion the Hornet 1 I got (a current model) needs a re-think

A number of leading ultralight tents are built with Dyneema—the high-tech fabric commonly used in boat sails and praised for its strength-to-weight ratio—and the Zpacks Duplex is best in class. With an incredibly low all-in weight of just 1 pounds 5 ounces (counting stakes and using two trekking poles for support), it’s by far the lightest tent here, yet still sleeps two and includes a bathtub floor for protection from the elements. In use, we found the Zpacks to feel decently roomy for its weight with a 48-inch peak height, and you can adjust the dimensions fairly easily depending on the campsite and conditions. In the end, no ultralight tent is perfect, but the Duplex is a high-quality option that has been relied upon by serious thru-hikers for years.

What are the shortcomings of the Zpacks Duplex? We’ve had no issues with water entering the tent—even while camping in snow—but the open sides and thin materials definitely can make it feel drafty in certain conditions. Second, with a trekking pole design you don’t get the steep walls of tents like the Copper Spur above, making the Zpacks a feasible but cramped option for two backpackers. And third, setting up the tent is more complicated than with a freestanding model, so we recommend practicing before heading out to make sure you know how to get a taut, even pitch. I want bug protection and rain protection because I don't like bugs (f ticks) and sleeping out gives me the creeps sometimes, so not really into the tarp and bivy. It seems to me like the Zpacks Duplex (occasionally bring my wife or a friend) would be a good option, being 19oz and having bug and rain protection integrated (not a tarp or bivy system, so it's simpler i.e. one piece)

Gossamer The Two vs. Zpacks Duplex

 One of the biggest benefits to the Dynamo material is that it's waterproof. This tent is 100 waterproof. I've never had any sort of leaking. I've had no issues

 You don't have to worry about the coatings aging and having to be reapplied. There's very little here with this tint that's going to age and that's not the case with copycat versions of this tent. I know that I've said a lot in regards to this tent, so let me wrap this up. in the end: this is a very impressive tint

Everyone Copies This Tent For A Reason - Zpacks Duplex Ultralight Tent Review

 So I won't go into any more specs on it because I'm sure you can find a lot of information out there about it. Let's talk about my opinion of this tent after 3,000 miles on the trail and what I like about it and what I don't like about it. So first off, obviously what I love about the tent is how insanely lightweight and roomy it is. As far as I'm concerned, it is the only tent that is this big that has this much room and is that low in weight

ZPacks Duplex 3,000+ Mile Review

 However, the ONE thing that is bad about BOTH tents is the way the end tie outs are sewn and sealed. The tents BOTH leak at the tie out points. This is due to the way they are sealed. It seams as if the seam seal was applied FIRST and then the tie outs sewn into the fabric

UPADATED AGAIN: I have purchased both the 1 and 2 person tent. Seems like very well quality and lightweight. However, the ONE thing that is bad about BOTH tents is the way the end tie outs are sewn and sealed. The tents BOTH leak at the tie out points

 The tent leaked at both ends where the tie outs are sewn into the fabric. These points are seam sealed, so I do not know why or how it leaked at both points. The water on the floor of the tent was about the size of a quarter. I have since sprayed all of the fly seams and the tie out points with silicone treatment

Very lightweight.

 So we just/\s/want to lower that down and make sure you're/\s/ not getting rain splatter and wind coming/\s/into the tent so we'll just open the doors. We'll take our trekking poles which/\s/are set to around 120 centimeters now/\s/ Zpax recommends 122. But for a storm pitch you/\s/can come down to 110 or maybe even lower and/\s/ you can see that just brought us down a bunch. So/\s/now we'll just tighten this guy line a little bit/\s/ redo our doors, tighten our doors, you can/\s/see how much lower that even brought us/\s/ Now if we go ahead and do the same to the other/\s/side or we could technically even bring this lower/\s/ and we could bring yeah, if it was really storm and/\s/then we'd want to bring this in basically as tight/\s/ as you can for the doors
