This year I bought a MontBell Versalite that has claims similar to the Helium. It uses "Windstopper" Goretex, but the waterproofing numbers looked really good. Having owned earlier GoreTex jackets I was VERY skeptical, but the jacket did better than I expected, considering how light it is.

I recently downsized from my giant North Face hardshell and got an Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket. Watched and read loads of reviews that put this 2.5 layer jacket pretty high on the "repelling water" front. They basically said yeah it won't handle a tropical thunderstorm, but it'll handle rainy weather just fine, and it's one of the best non-Goretex that you can find. Well, I decided to try it out before my trip next week and BOY am I glad I did. Went to the park in the rain for about an hour and a half, it was raining fairly hard but still - an hour and a half. And I got SOAKED. DRENCHED. It soaked through on the sleeves, chest, back, shoulders, you name it. 

What?? Is this really "impressively waterproof", as one reviewer called it? How much rain do you expect a rain jacket to handle before it soaks through? I know that there is no such thing truly as 'waterproof', rather just water resistance up until a point, but I thought that point ought to be at least a couple hours. Is gore-tex truly my only option if I want weather protection that lasts beyond a summer shower? I don't find Gore-tex jackets to be very ultralight which is why I went for the Helium, but maybe I should just bite the bullet.

How much rain should a good rain jacket be able to handle?

 Being able to put your hands into these pockets and get them out of the wind or store items in these pockets is really nice and the helium does not have that option for around the same price maybe 30 $40 more I think it's well worth it to go with this jacket. It's got all the features that helium has just as life, just as packable. but you're gonna get these pockets. you're gonna get the super breathability

 see how the breathability of this thing is working out. So far it's surprising me, all right. So I've been moving for a while now and definitely getting warm inside of the jacket rising. Li I'm not feeling a whole lot of condensation building up on the inside I'm not feeling super clammy

 Pockets are raised up slightly so that when you have your hip belts on from a pack or a fanny pack whatnot around your waist, you can still access your pockets. Waterproof zippers. Pockets are pretty big. You can easily store a phone or or your keys or snacks

 So I've been moving for a while now and definitely getting warm inside of the jacket rising. Li I'm not feeling a whole lot of condensation building up on the inside I'm not feeling super clammy. My back's a little bit wet, but that's to be expected with a pack on. That's just gonna happen

Ultralight Backpacking Rain jacket - Montbell Versalite Gear Review

 Yeah, the Outdoor Research: Helium 2 jacket. Really good jacket. Um, but it didn't have pit zips and I always got so hot in it. I wear it in the winter and it was just the winter over my like a long sleeve shirt and I'd be hiking and I'd be so hot because it just doesn't ventilate, doesn't let any of the air that you're building up inside your jacket out at all

 Okay, there's wild turkeys. Look at those freaking fit birds. See if I can go any farther. Yeah, look at them

 The other thing about these pockets is when I pull this, you see that the bottom waist part of the jacket cinches. This is on both sides so you can actually cinch your jacket from the inside your pocket. Very interesting design. Don't know why that's the case, but it works

 My arm's tired. The great thing about it is if like like I said, if you want to stay warm, you just keep them zipped up. If you just want to have a little bit of flow, I just zip them halfway down. uh, whichever I had

 So my only real concern when it comes to this jacket is that it depends on a DWR coating for its water repellency. So in high, highly used areas like across the shoulders where my shoulder straps would be for my pack, I can see the DWR treatment wearing off and I can see the material possibly wetting out in that zone. Now that hasn't happened to me yet and it doesn't concern me that much because there are companies out there that make DWR treatment products that you can just apply to the rain jacket that will bring back that water repellency. Now a couple gripes about this jacket

I’m 6’1, 160lbs. I use both L on my Primelite and Versalite. Had the Primelite for four years, Versalite for two. Both layers fit me great so if you’re a M in the Primelite, you’ll probably want to go with M on the Jacket as well

 The size of the hood opening is controlled by two cords at the top of the chest which are easy to grab and tighten even if you’re wearing gloves or rain mitts. The beauty of this system is that you don’t have to reach into the neck or hood area with wet gloves to adjust it in the rain.The cords are routed through two channels in the neck and sewn quite robustly to avoid tearing. If you still manage to rip them out, there are exposed adjusters above the channels, much like the conventional ones you find on other jackets, that you can still use to tension and adjust the size of the hood’s face opening

The cords are routed through the neck so they can be adjusted easily while wearing glovesThere’s also a stiffener sewn into the brim to keep its shape, although it’s not bendable like a wire. Still, it is sturdy enough that I can hike without a billed cap to keep the rain off of my eyes and my glasses, which I appreciate.Overall, the Versalite hood is just fantastic for a rain jacket. I especially like the hood sizing and adjustments because they minimize noisy flapping in a stiff breeze so I can use the Versalite as a wind shirt as well as a rain jacket

I would start with their calcite rain jacket...it is a very good in the rain and personally anything more expensive is overkill unless you are into alpine climbing

Let me go ahead and write Here show it to y'all I bought it in this nice reddish color and and it's a size large and Truthfully, I can say it's been really really dependable Even like today when it was drizzling I didn't feel any concerns like it was gonna seep through the fabric or make my clothing underneath wet and Even all the details you can tell they put like a layer of plastic around the zipper to make sure it stays watertight And it's made of this really nice material this Gore-Tex and And Honestly, they've paid a lot of attention to details because they have things like this Velcro around the arms and Drawstring that is located inside the jacket that kind of goes into the left-hand pocket and One thing I do have to mention it doesn't have any inside pockets So if you want to store stuff like that, you won't find any here, but it does have a pocket up here and I don't really make much use of it myself, but there should need be Then another extra feature is zippers underneath the armpits Yes, it has pit zips. So if you open it up Should be able to add some ventilation for people who are doing things like activities like hiking and so on or and stuff like that, so and Finally, there's another drawstring around the hood
