 I'm going to create the best of air with the best of breath! Hey skiers! I'm Jeff from SkiEssentials.com checking in from my basement in Morrisville, Vermont this time. Not quite as nice out today, so I thought we would have a seat down here in the basement and take a look at this brand new Duke PT Alpine Touring binding. Pretty exciting stuff

 And, you know, you really with the toe pieces being closed and connected you do feel that connection to the ski like you are on a jester. Yeah, it was awesome like I was cool to be like wow I just tore it up in this tech binding, fully tech. And now I have this really locked down sense of confidence to go rip and you know it was great we had soft snow to test it out. Yeah, there's some hard spots underneath, but I felt like I was skiing on my Alpine setup

 So you'll see it looks a little funny when I put my boot in here now but I will just to kind of demonstrate how this thing works. Basically this is replacing the Duke frame binding so the goal of this binding or the idea behind this binding is to provide the highest level downhill or alpine performance possible while still giving you touring capabilities. So it's not going to be the most efficient binding out there. We'll talk about kind of how it falls into the world of touring bindings at the end once I kind of show you how it works

 And it pretty much it kind of carries over what they had in the previous Duke, you know the frame Duke that was same thing with that or I guess you could, you could throw the guardian 16 or tracker 16 into that conversation but those were the, the go to bindings for somebody that wanted touring ability or touring capability but really really good downhill performance. And I think this is kind of the new, the new standard for that, which is cool. Yeah, I know it was really cool and like I said to have the efficiency to be in a more uphill tech fitting which is cool because like in those old frame bindings it was great, but you just didn't have the efficiency and now to have that efficiency where you're like okay this is awesome and then build that confidence on the way down there you're like, Yeah, if I run into any mixed conditions and or, you know, these big mountain skiers go off the clips or whatever they're doing they do have the ability and the confidence to push this thing into another level. And with that build the way it's connected and there's zero movement just a real sense of connectedness to the ski and yeah there's 100% downhill binding right there on the way down it was great

 So in order to do that you push down the toe piece, this flips forward like this, and then you just gotta pop out this piece and the toe piece actually comes off and at that point you just clip in like regular tech bindings. To put it into ski mode on the brakes you simply just flick this little bar over, push that in and it's locked. Another nice feature is they've designed the riser with this little tab here so when you're in and moving uphill if you need to switch the riser up all you gotta do is push down on this with your pole and it'll actually pop it right up and then it just locks in. So it's really good for hands free movement, you can just use your ski pole

 But with these you're not actually using the pins at all, it's just a regular full alpine toe. So I mean I couldn't be more happy with these things, 10 out of 10 would recommend Marker Duke PT16, go get them.

I have two seasons on these bindings. My ski destinations involve travel both in North America and Europe. As such, I needed a set up that would work well at the resort while also allowing me to do side hill and single day touring. Hauling two setups everywhere was just not practical

 When it's time to unlock the heal it is a simple flick of the pole. Actively using the 4 heal settings greatly increases the up-hill efficiency. You do pay a bit ofa weight penalty but I have compensated for this by ski choice. Bottom line is, you can optimize your setup for a single purpose but if you only want to carry one setup through they airport and onto a bus to Chamonix you are sacrificing very little in performance

Great Travel Setup

I've been using the Shift since it came out in 2018 and I love it. It is heavier and a little more complicated to use than a classic touring setup, but the power and accuracy that it offers in downhill mode is what keeps me on it. I have heard that people have difficulty clearing snow from the binding in transition and I have seen the binding adjusted incorrectly, causing release issues. Personally, these problems have been completely insignificant when compared to the advantages of being able to charge downhill in a DIN rated binding in the backcountry

Pre releasing all over the place, touring functionality seems fine but they're a bit heavy (but that's what you get when you buy a cross over binding).

After seven days of resort downhill skiing and a quick 1hr touring setup test, the bindings work flawlessly in both modes. Easy to switch. Love the flexibility!

The best of both worlds

I've used these in the resort and they are solid. I've taken them into the Adirondaks, and they were great, transitions were smooth. So far treks have been in the 6 to 8 mile, 2500 vertical. Haven't really experienced a major issue with the increased weight
