And of course they want to do it on a budget. Well, I'll tell you what, the best way to upgrade your snare drum on a budget is to buy used and is actually to buy one particular kind of snare drum

And that is, chances are if you came up through the public school band program in the 70s or 80s, you had one of these at some point and it's the blue olive acrylite. My opinion, this is literally the greatest snare drum ever made

 But most of the time I run them wide open. If you get decent heads and decent wires and slap them on one of these things, and it sounds bad, it's not the drum, dude. It's you. It's either the way you're playing or you don't know how to tune drums because there's no reason why this drum should sound bad

 I was at work, just kind of going through it,

 and I see this just beat up just red drums.

 And then I scroll down, I look at the price,

Old Ludwig Acrolite snare drums! They average $250-300 and hold their own/sound better in some cases than $800-900 snares that have been designed to pay homage to them.

What drum gear has surprised you the most? I mean we all know the high end stuff that sounds amazing, but what have you owned/borrowed/heard that didn't cost a lot but sounded good? I will start you with 2 of mine.....

Check out heartbeat cymbals. Get a ludwig acrolite. Use the drums you have and learn how to tune them well.

We have a mic'd set up with a full cage and we are livestreaming and recording our sets. Probably looking for a modern worship (Bethel, if you will) sound. We don't have an unlimited budget, obviously, but it sounds like we're going for high end gear!

Off the top of my head, something like the Ludwig Black Beauty snare, DW Custom kit, Zildjian K Custom worship pack, and some form of a drum rack to clean up the kit area for all the mics/cables could be good. 

I want to have a good kit rec to give to the worship director! Maybe I should lean towards something a little cheaper/used. Any thoughts or ideas you would recommend?
