Because most manufacturers compromise on the display quality on low-end devices, it's hard to find a cheap laptop with a nice, sharp screen for media consumption. In comes the Lenovo Chromebook Duet (2020), the best cheap multimedia laptop under $300 we've tested. It's a compact device sporting a sharp 10.1 inch screen with a pixel density that rivals Apple's Retina displays. It's a 2-in-1 convertible with a kickstand and a detachable keyboard, so you can use it as a tablet to make it easier to carry around or save space.

Now, let's talk more about that display. On top of being sharp, it gets pretty bright, enough for use in well-lit settings but not outdoors in broad daylight. It can display all the colors in SDR content as it has full coverage of the sRGB color space, and colors look reasonably accurate out of the box. It's an IPS panel with good viewing angles, which is great for sharing content with others, but it isn't the best for dark rooms because blacks look gray in dim settings.

Unfortunately, the speakers sound quiet, unnatural, and treble-heavy, with almost no bass whatsoever. Also, it doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you'll have to use the included USB-C audio adapter or Bluetooth headphones. On the upside, the battery lasts for nearly seven hours of video playback, enough time to get through a couple of full-length movies. You can use this laptop to get some work done, but the performance isn't that great, and the keyboard is pretty uncomfortable to type on. For media consumption, though, this is a good option to consider.

The best multimedia laptop under $300 that we've tested is the Lenovo Chromebook Duet (2020). It's more of a tablet with a kickstand and detachable keyboard, which means you can detach the keyboard when you want a light device for viewing content and attach it when you need to do some work. The keyboard feels pretty cramped, though, so it isn't the best option for extended use as it may cause some fatigue over time.

Although its 1080p resolution isn't impressive on paper, the display looks very sharp because it's a fairly small screen. It gets more than bright enough to combat glare, and it also gets very dim to provide a more comfortable viewing experience in the dark. That said, it's still an IPS panel with a fairly low contrast ratio, meaning blacks look grayish in dim settings. Its battery life is excellent as it lasts nearly 7 hours of video playback, enough time to get through a couple of movies and TV show episodes.

Unfortunately, the speakers sound treble-heavy and don't get very loud. There's no 3.5mm headphone jack, meaning you have to use wireless headphones or use the included USB-C audio adapter for wired ones. With only a single USB-C port, you can't charge the device while using wired headphones. Nonetheless, this is a great Chrome OS tablet for media consumption at a budget-friendly price.

If you want to stick with Chrome OS but prefer a 2-in-1, get the Lenovo Chromebook Duet (2020), a Chrome OS tablet with a detachable keyboard. You can detach the keyboard to make it easier to hold when viewing content or attach it when you need to type something. It has a sharp, bright, and colorful display, which is hard to find on inexpensive Chromebooks. The keyboard comes with the device, so there's no need to purchase it separately. It isn't the most comfortable keyboard; it's fine for a couple of emails but not for typing out a long paper. Battery life is excellent as it lasts nearly 12 hours of light productivity or seven hours of video playback.

So when I tried to dock my Lenovo Chromebook Duet to my ultra wide monitor it gave some poor resolutions. No option for my 1080 X 2560 ultra wide monitor like my Samsung DeX setup. I learned that my Duet does fine with TV (1080X1920) probably because of the 30HZ connections. My ultra wide monitor likes a 60HZ so my Duet gave some poor resolution in the choices

 The battery on the Duet so far has been great even when doing things like watching movies, gaming or running graphic design apps. I often have 2 radios running (Bluetooth and wifi) and tend to turn the brightness up a bit and still get an easy 6+ hours and be over 25% battery left.

Costco has the 64 GB Tab A7 for $180, and it comes with a bonus 64 GB MicroSD card. Once you add a keyboard case, you're at roughly the same price.

Given that it is roughly a wash, which device will better serve my intended use and keep me happy longer?

 If this thing could stay up and running it would easily get 4 stars from me.  Lenovo should be embarrassed by this thing, it's definitely a dark stain on my perception of the company. Sadly, I have to say that if you think you're saving money by the low price, you're wrong - I will now need to buy another device, at higher cost, having basically wasted my money on this. Add the cost of this and the cost of a reliable replacement and I'd have been able to buy a high end tablet in the first place

 I bought it for writing, surfing the net, watching youtube and sketching with a stylus - that's it (I don't even need it to have cameras or a touch screen). However, I I simply cannot accept that it just constantly fails. If this thing could stay up and running it would easily get 4 stars from me. Getting 1st chromebook

 I'm ambivalent about the 13" display -- the Duet is now in laptop territory. Would've preferred 11" or 12".

Lenovo just announced the next Duet: 13.3" OLED FHD screen, Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 CPU, 4/8GB RAM, 64/128/256GB eMMC

 The chrome app, which is too slow to use, the Android app, which doesn't space the columns correctly, and the decorated window, which is okay but the keyboard pops up every time I switch channels -I can only access webex meetings by launching the Android app and putting in the ID. Clicking the link doesn't work -Not enough storage on the 64GB model to install Linux with much room left over -I have to use the Android Youtube app because the chrome one isn't as smooth and the touch controls are worse -When playing videos it's hard to seek, because grabbing the seeker tool and dragging right is the same gesture as Back (drag right from the left edge), so if you're off by half a millimeter, you just go back a page. The Back gesture cannot be changed or disabled. -If you have both the Chrome and Android versions of an app (like Youtube), enjoy double notifications

I went with ChromeOS because it seems like Google wants to make it their future mobile platform and it runs Android apps, but despite the amount of time ChromeOS with Android apps has been available, it feels very much like beta software.  -No dark mode (though I read this morning that it's in the Canary release, finally!) -Weird bug randomly duplicates text when typing in the Chrome new tab search bar (no issue on the URL bar) -Sometimes it takes 10+ seconds to wake up from sleep, then another 10 to become useful, even with 0 apps open -Animations are intermittently, but frequently, sluggish -OneDrive integration is useless (won't allow me to Write and doesn't show up in most dialog boxes as a destination) -There is a shrinking library of Chrome apps in favor of decorated windows, so I have 3 versions of Slack installed

 -My Android apps do not auto-update despite the setting enabled to auto-update them -I miss my android app switcher in touch-only mode  On top of all that, when it's a bare tablet, the form factor is great.   I'll probably forget to update this review down the line if my feelings change, but if it's anything like the last laptop I had, I'll probably bump it up a star or two based on longevity.

 The cool thing about it is that it charges very quickly.  Wifi works fine and it comes with a ethernet cord slot when you need it. Video quality is good and refresh rate is adequate.  Form Factor is strange as the GTX 1660ti pushes past the hinge of the screen, so you have the fans and video components jut out about an inch from where the base of the screen rests

Nice Entry-level Gaming Laptop with "meh" Battery Life and Annoying Lenovo Bloatware Installed

 The right USB does this less so I use that one. I haven't done any heavy gaming yet so I can't attest to its performance there yet, but so far the airflow during heavy usage seems good and the keyboard is very decent. Also, the webcam has a built-in manual slider to block/unblock it which was a cool bonus.
