 this/\s/machine does have Pid, so unlike its competitors/\s/ you're always going to stay within one/\s/degree of optimal brewing temperature/\s/ The pid on this machine is a little/\s/customizable You have a low medium high/\s/ setting. On the older model of the Mara, you/\s/were able to get into the specific degrees/\s/ but they have simplified it for folks and just/\s/doing the low medium high, you can access that just underneath here. So if you're in the circle/\s/and you're pressed in the middle, that's your low/\s/ To the left is going to be medium and/\s/then to the right is going to be high/\s/ Okay, so this does have a 58 millimeter portafilter/\s/it is very nice and it has a good weight to it/\s/ as well. This portafilter does lay flat, so/\s/when you're trying to dose out your coffee/\s/ and tamp, you're not also trying to level your/\s/portafilter which is is helpful

 It's all going/\s/to be based on how well you tamp your espresso/\s/ as well as your grind size and things like that/\s/one of the things I like about this machine is/\s/ It's not overly sensitive to grind size as you'll/\s/notice here I'm just using the virtuoso plus/\s/ from Barraza with this machine. Whenever I/\s/demo this machine, this is the grinder that I/\s/ choose to use. It's very accessible to customers/\s/and it's very easy to use. It's not like some other/\s/ espresso grinders where you do/\s/get into the micro adjustments/\s/ So one of the reasons I consider this an entry/\s/level is it's not sensitive to grind size

Never went back. Got a Eureka Mignon Manuale which will be replaced by a DF64 soon and Lelit Mara X as my current setup. The latter was a game changer. Oh, and never buy Nespresso

Inspired by a lot of recent posts about beans and a few about techniques, I was surprised that people didn’t already have roasters in mind, some didn’t have a favourite coffee shop they could get ideas from, and some didn’t even have a favourite drink!

I had naively thought I was the common case - I got into it because I already loved espresso, spent a fair amount of time finding new good places etc but eventually compiled a ludicrous spreadsheet about the break even point and upgraded with lockdowns when I worried my access to very good espresso might be cut off - but it seems not.

So I ask you, r/espresso, how did you get into this expensive time consuming and hyperactivity inducing hobby?  Did you have a business case?  Moved to the sticks and so had to get high on your own supply?  Thought you could do better?  Needed to make tiramisu on the regular?  Dietary requirements?  Did someone buy you an espresso machine and now here we are?

What got you into home espresso?

 If you absolutely want to have an HX, then consider Lelit Mara X, which is the only HX that has its PID temperature sensor in the brew group where it belongs, not in the steam boiler.

No need to deal with cooling flushes, group thermometers, Dragons vs. Mixers vs. Agnostics, etc. Check out Lelit Elizabeth, Breville Dual Boiler, Profitec Pro 300, Rancilio Silvia Pro, or ACS Minima

New to espresso, what grinder should I get?

It is more trouble than it’s worth compared to a double boiler. The temperature instability will require cooling flushes. I would also avoid anything with an E61 head as that takes 20 minutes to warm up and has significantly worse temp stability than a saturated group since it is constantly losing/gaining heat with a large thermal mass. The Lelit Victoria, Lelit Anna PID, Silvia with PID, ECM Casa V, and gaggia with PID are probably your best bets for consistent shots until you go into Lelit MaraX/Elizabeth territory

I finally scored a Niche, help me choose a machine? Looking at Gaggia classic, Lelit Mara X, ECM V Slim, etc

I have the Lelit Mara X and I love it. The choice of steam priority mode vs brew priority mode, the steam boost after pulling a shot, and the brew temperature adjustment put it in a class by itself among HX machines.

So this is my final setup I’ve decided on, anybody run this same setup? Anything you think I should change?

Miele CM5310 Silence Superautomatic Espresso Machine | Crew Review

 The instructions say never to use any milk other than whole cow milk; I tried mac nut milk one time and it tasted too toasted, almost like burnt marzipan. So I stick with whole milk and the dairy aspect is as good as -- if not better than -- any store-bought latte.  The beverages come out extremely hot. I experimented with different temperature settings (mostly trying to optimize flavor), and even the lowest setting comes out pretty piping hot

 The machine comes with some factory test coffee still in it -- you will want to discard it and make (and dump) several of your own beverages before trying to drink (the nearly black factory coffee is extremely roasted and tastes/smells basically like charcoal).  We bought this machine originally to use a five pound bag of high quality, lightly roasted unground beans that were sent us by mistake (we usually order ground coffee). It is very important to use high-quality beans (meaning on the dry side, and not oily). Now that we have had some time to compare the same exact coffee made using ground pour-over (our long-time method) versus whole bean using this machine, it turns out that pour-over just tastes better

 The flavor is more complex and robust -- probably because the water passes very slowly through the ground coffee (and cools a bit in the process), whereas this machine passes extremely hot water quickly through a "puck" that it creates after grinding whole beans. The entire process takes maybe a minute (and is rather loud -- the "Silence" part of the machine's name is true only when it is not running).  The bean and water reservoirs are not especially large, so you will need to refill them pretty frequently (particularly the water reservoir -- which you would want to replace daily anyway). The machine does a lot of self-cleaning maintenance which also uses some water, so you will need to empty the puck and water drainage compartments pretty often as well

Pretty Impressive

 Why? Why can’t it just have a nice stainless wand like every other machine? I don’t want any of my hot beverages coming out of plastic. And I’m using “hot” loosely here because it’s more a a medium-hot. So, it looks like Miele needs to go back to the drawing board and build a better mousetrap. It’s a pain to use and clean

I prefer stronger Milk and Americano drinks and my wife prefers weaker Americano drinks. I say this because this context matters to my following review. I have spent hours researching and testing various machines and I will say there is no "perfect" one that I have found. I tried many of the superautomattics with the milk drink capability such as the SMEG, Jura, D6 & E6, the Phillips 3200, Seaco Xelsis , and the Miele CM6350 (refurb that dies a week later) and this Miele CM5510 Quiet

Yes this is subjective but the note vs Jura E6 is significantly different in that the Jura (including some of the office models I have tried) is much more acidic. Both the Jura and Miele's output very hot coffees and fairly hot milk

Best Superautomatic for the price range available as of 2022 if you prefer coffee drinks

 I use light roast coffee beans that are perfect for regular coffee and espresso. I can say with much experience, if Miele makes something, it does the job as well as it can be done.
