You might not even fully realize just how much you want a ski like this. For high-volume ski touring, steep-and-rowdy firm-snow ski mountaineering, and work-week, headlamp exercise skinning, a lightweight set-up based on the K2 WayBack 80 is just the ticket. The featherweight construction flies uphill. The narrow and stiff construction grabs on the steeps but gets bucked around in tougher snow. 
This is a specialized tool. You won't pick these for day-to-day backcountry skiing. Deep, perfect powder snow is enjoyable, but bigger guns will be even more fun. Any sort of poor snow &#40;breakable crust? Slop?&#41; is better handled by a bigger and heavier option. All small skis are under-equipped for tough snow, but the K2 does better than most. It is this ski's more forgiving tough-snow performance that edges it ahead of other close competitors.

Obviously I won't be taking these out for powder laps but for long/fast and/or late season missions this is a great choice at a great price. Match them with a race binding (I mounted a Plum 150), light boots and race skins and you'll have a setup you won&#39;t mind hiking with to find snow in mid summer.

I got these for late spring/summer use and couldn't be happier. They are very light but can still be skied hard. I have found they shine on steep icy slopes (skied bulletproof on Temple SW) and they handle those horrible summer sun cups just fine. Compared to the Waybacks 88s I find they are a bit less grabby in breakable crusts and easier to control on steep ice

 Basically what they're doing is they're using basically longitudinal strips of fibers that are connected to a visco rubber material in this portion of the ski. So these fibers kind of catch the unwanted vibrations up here in the tip. So say you hit some chundery snow up here in the tip, it's then dissipated. The energy, the vibrations are dissipated into that rubber, so you feel almost nothing by the time they reach your feet

 So the rocker profile is more consistent with the previous generation of experience skis. So like I said, kind of blending the two shapes that they've used in the past. The result is a ski that's really responsive on groomers, has great edge grip, has great power, but when you take it off trail or when you need to exit a carving turn, get the ski to slip and smear, the edge release is easier. So it's not only blending the shapes of the previous two experience skis or the previous two shapes that they've used, it's also kind of blending the performance

 So now we're going back to extended side cut, or what Rossignol calls all trail side cut. So long effective edge on groomer, the same shape in the tip and the tail, the widest portion of the ski is right here at the end. That means on a groomer, on firm snow, you're getting a long effective edge, a lot of purchase, a lot of stability, and a really good connection to the surface. When we look at the rocker profile, sorry for slamming the ski into the bench there, we get a little bit more rocker than we saw in those original skis

 So say you hit some chundery snow up here in the tip, it's then dissipated. The energy, the vibrations are dissipated into that rubber, so you feel almost nothing by the time they reach your feet. A really innovative way of kind of quieting a ski, giving it more vibration damping, and it definitely works. These skis have a very smooth, stable feel
