You might not even fully realize just how much you want a ski like this. For high-volume ski touring, steep-and-rowdy firm-snow ski mountaineering, and work-week, headlamp exercise skinning, a lightweight set-up based on the K2 WayBack 80 is just the ticket. The featherweight construction flies uphill. The narrow and stiff construction grabs on the steeps but gets bucked around in tougher snow. 
This is a specialized tool. You won't pick these for day-to-day backcountry skiing. Deep, perfect powder snow is enjoyable, but bigger guns will be even more fun. Any sort of poor snow &#40;breakable crust? Slop?&#41; is better handled by a bigger and heavier option. All small skis are under-equipped for tough snow, but the K2 does better than most. It is this ski's more forgiving tough-snow performance that edges it ahead of other close competitors.

Obviously I won't be taking these out for powder laps but for long/fast and/or late season missions this is a great choice at a great price. Match them with a race binding (I mounted a Plum 150), light boots and race skins and you'll have a setup you won&#39;t mind hiking with to find snow in mid summer.

I got these for late spring/summer use and couldn't be happier. They are very light but can still be skied hard. I have found they shine on steep icy slopes (skied bulletproof on Temple SW) and they handle those horrible summer sun cups just fine. Compared to the Waybacks 88s I find they are a bit less grabby in breakable crusts and easier to control on steep ice

 You know, definitely kind of blurs that line between frontside and all mountain. These Experience skis have all undergone a pretty significant change for this year and much to the delight of, you know, most of that intermediate level skier that's going to get the most out of this ski. Definitely blurs that line, you know, 82 millimeters underfoot just by its number alone should be in the all mountain range, but with a little bit more of a frontside shape and construction to it. So we start with a lightweight Pallonia wood core and add in Basalt fiber

 We see a lot of use of Basalt in cross-country skis as well. So it's a very efficient material for making something strong and smooth but without a lot of weight. So that factors through in this Experience 82 really nicely. In the tips here we have these fibers that lead into a rubber plate here so that those fibers kind of harness any of the bad vibrations and then they hit that rubber plate and just go away

 So a nice positive camber underfoot, you know, it's a pretty simple construction to the ski so they build energy into it by putting more of that camber underfoot, kind of building that latent energy in here, allowing you to access it, getting the rebound out of the tail of the ski. The rocker and the tip lines up really well with where that half-sidewall ends, so right about here, and then a nice gradual curve to it as well. So a 4-in-82, you know, this has a fair amount of rocker in the shovel, you know, and that adds to that ability to initiate and enter the turn well as well as helping you stay on top of any fresh snow you might encounter or even at the end of the day when the trails get cut up, this allows you to kind of float and drift over that easily. A little bit more business-like in the tail, you know, that rocker again lines up with where the half-sidewall ends, pretty low, pretty minimal splay, but a good length for this shape ski, so that's going to give you good and easy exit to the turn, but that taper shape is very minimal
