You might not even fully realize just how much you want a ski like this. For high-volume ski touring, steep-and-rowdy firm-snow ski mountaineering, and work-week, headlamp exercise skinning, a lightweight set-up based on the K2 WayBack 80 is just the ticket. The featherweight construction flies uphill. The narrow and stiff construction grabs on the steeps but gets bucked around in tougher snow. 
This is a specialized tool. You won't pick these for day-to-day backcountry skiing. Deep, perfect powder snow is enjoyable, but bigger guns will be even more fun. Any sort of poor snow &#40;breakable crust? Slop?&#41; is better handled by a bigger and heavier option. All small skis are under-equipped for tough snow, but the K2 does better than most. It is this ski's more forgiving tough-snow performance that edges it ahead of other close competitors.

Obviously I won't be taking these out for powder laps but for long/fast and/or late season missions this is a great choice at a great price. Match them with a race binding (I mounted a Plum 150), light boots and race skins and you'll have a setup you won&#39;t mind hiking with to find snow in mid summer.

I got these for late spring/summer use and couldn't be happier. They are very light but can still be skied hard. I have found they shine on steep icy slopes (skied bulletproof on Temple SW) and they handle those horrible summer sun cups just fine. Compared to the Waybacks 88s I find they are a bit less grabby in breakable crusts and easier to control on steep ice

The Nordica Dobermann Spitfire RB earned a couple of 10s (out of a possible 10) in the Overall classification from testers with an East Coast racing background, but saw more 8s, and even a couple of 6s, due to the ski’s need to be constantly driven—and driven hard! As noted in the overall review, this is basically a street legal race ski built to thrill skiers who are still bashing gates in their local beer league, or dropping hard arcs underneath the chair.

 But that doesn’t mean this is a ski that any intermediate could really handle. The Spitfire is built to go fast and hard, on groomed, boilerplate, and even Eastern blue ice, and will frustrate—or flat out scare—anyone who doesn’t have the ability to drive this ski. Buy these boards if you like to treat every run like your own personal racecourse, ride them hard, and you will reap the rewards.

 This is a ski that flourishes—and feels rock solid underfoot—when you’re really moving, but gets clunky when you aren’t. If you like to slow down and take it easy once in awhile, check out the Elan Black Edition, or the Rossignol Hero Elite Plus.
