You might not even fully realize just how much you want a ski like this. For high-volume ski touring, steep-and-rowdy firm-snow ski mountaineering, and work-week, headlamp exercise skinning, a lightweight set-up based on the K2 WayBack 80 is just the ticket. The featherweight construction flies uphill. The narrow and stiff construction grabs on the steeps but gets bucked around in tougher snow. 
This is a specialized tool. You won't pick these for day-to-day backcountry skiing. Deep, perfect powder snow is enjoyable, but bigger guns will be even more fun. Any sort of poor snow &#40;breakable crust? Slop?&#41; is better handled by a bigger and heavier option. All small skis are under-equipped for tough snow, but the K2 does better than most. Obviously I won't be taking these out for powder laps but for long/fast and/or late season missions this is a great choice at a great price. Match them with a race binding (I mounted a Plum 150), light boots and race skins and you'll have a setup you won&#39;t mind hiking with to find snow in mid summer.

I got these for late spring/summer use and couldn't be happier. They are very light but can still be skied hard. I have found they shine on steep icy slopes (skied bulletproof on Temple SW) and they handle those horrible summer sun cups just fine. Compared to the Waybacks 88s I find they are a bit less grabby in breakable crusts and easier to control on steep ice

The Ski Monster

 It also uses one thin sheet of metal which is different from past versions. They did do this a couple years ago but now they've changed it to a terrain specific metal. And what that means is the wider the ski gets the more specific the metal is. So you know with the narrower skis there's going to be a larger ratio of metal to wood in order to have that edge control and then as you get wider there's less metal to wood ratio in order to have that float that you need in more powder days

 You know it's an 88 waist width so it's going to be able to hit the woods, the bumps, carve, be on the mainly on-piece but you can go off-piece if you'd like. Ability wise you know a high intermediate to an advanced skier with that metal in there it's going to be a little bit more demanding but if you are an intermediate and you just really liked this ski maybe a shorter length would be better because it wouldn't be overpowering and you would be able to maneuver it but it is definitely geared towards that advanced lady that can power the ski under their foot and carve a turn from edge to edge.  Also they've added their True Tip technology and what that does is it just reduces the weight in the tip of the skis which allows you to get into that turn and have an easier swing weight. It also is very responsive so if you're going to go over some crud it's going to absorb that feeling and take that away from your legs in the center of the ski and allow you to stay on edge. Another thing I really love about the Santa Annas is the shape of it. That shovel tip and a little bit of tail rocker allows you to be able to wiggle on the trees and the bumps if you'd like to but it also allows you to get on edge and hold that edge and that's what that metal does in the ski
