So I ended up buying a Slash 8 in April, super value for the components it comes with. I did swap out the brakes for RSCs rather than the Code Rs it comes with and the wheels to a Chris King/Stan's Flows set I had. In the $4k range weak wheels are what a ton of manufacturers do to cut costs, frustrating but normal.

Which bike would you choose

 I was hesitant to go full 29" but I will never use another wheelsize again. 29" is absolutely the way to go. The wheels can go over roots and rocks on climbs that I would have to really power through on my Santa Cruz Bronson (27.5")

Monster truck is not just marketing

 So A lot of Deluxe and Super Deluxe is going on there,, but basically they just tried to get the best tune they could for this bike as a numbered rebound dial, which is one of those clever little things that I'm not sure why people haven't done before. So Basically, if the setup guide says, you need to run seven clicks of rebound, you can just look at the dial and turn to seven. It also has a three position compression switch. So When the shocks are in the more open position, you can select from a firm, kind of medium and a soft setting

 Also, out of the five bikes we have, the other ones all have FOX 38, so it sounds kind of nice to give this ZEB a try. I'm able to find my happy place with both forks. There's a slight difference in how they feel on the trail. Kind of hard to put into words, but overall, easy to set up, issue free

 You're gonna be going through mixed terrain, a lot of times chunky rocky terrain. It's only five millimeters, but that can't be the difference between smacking a rock and not smacking a rock. I Think just speccing 170s would be the way to go. (upbeat music) What are the pros of the Trek Slash? Well I'd say that light and stiff frame

Trek Slash Review: Longer, Slacker, Better | 2021 Field Test

 Actually getting hold of bikes has proven extremely tough, especially so when you consider I'm trying to get all the bikes to fit within a 3500 to 4000 pound budget. Due to these issues, I had to be a little more flexible when it came to pricing, but thankfully things didn't stray too far either way with the pricing spanning from 3 450 pounds to 4 200 pounds. In the end, once the bikes had landed, I could get stuck into the fun bit and hit the trails. I rode a variety of trails back to back to get a good idea of how each bike performed

 It helps that the Spec is incredible for the money, and let's be honest, it looks great too, doesn't it? For those not in the know, The Slash is Trek's 160 mil travel enduro bike, and for 2021 it's had a significant makeover. Compared to its predecessor, the Slash A is the second cheapest bike within the eight strong Slash lineup, and if you take a look at the spec sheet, you may well find yourself double checking the 3 450 pound asking price as it really is that good. The Slash has always performed well with us over the years, and the latest version offers updated geometry and tweaks to its suspension platform. This includes a new rear shock, a longer travel fork, and some internal frame storage

 The trails I rode varied from natural, steep and technical to higher speed bike park tracks. It's at this point I need to say a massive thanks to Bike Park Whales, who, despite being closed due to Covert 19 restrictions, still allowed me to come and test that. Obviously their uplift was shut, so testing took a little longer this year, but it's safe to say that these bikes have seen more miles both up and down than ever before. But what makes the ultimate Enduro bike? I wanted a bike that could be comfortably pedaled uphill as well as offering all the traction and control to allow me to smash the downhills at the same time

 It manages to track the trail with pinpoint accuracy without sacrificing any of that much loved liveliness or pop. The support through the suspension, coupled with that torque feel through the frame ensures that you can really feel a difference in speed as you pump through every single bump. That reactiveness and rapid pickup from the Bontrager rear hub also means that getting back up to speed after tackling a slower section of trail doesn't feel anywhere near as labored as it can on some super plush, big travel rigs. It's easy to hold on to speed too, even when things get really ugly here

 The first puncture was understandable, I was running pretty low pressures up front, but the rear should have been fine. For the money it would cost, throwing on a set of Maxxis tires stock is much better than replacing a rim. I also think that a 180mm fork would do better for this bike for steep sections, but the 170mm one is perfectly fine for most people.
