Best Home Printers of 2022 - GearLab

 Sad to see that they have raised the price to almost $600 for the same piece of equipment. Two years ago this would have been enough for a high end color printer. Definitely not worth $600.

 It prints nice though and fires out a first page quickly. But it should for 800 or whatever we paid for this black and white printer.

 I have had $200 Brother printers that I've had up and running scanning, faxing to email and everything else in an hour and I'm still tweaking this thing after about three weeks. Whoever at HP thought it was a good idea to log someone out every three minutes and offer no option to increase the timeout should be fired. Also, you cant log in with your own accounts, at least I haven't found a way. You have to log in with the PIN number that was assigned to the printer

 However, having a printer this size in your home office can be a bit inconvenient. It just doesn't really fit well on top or under my desk.

My favorite feature is the ability to connect wirelessly, which does allow me to keep the printer away from my computer. This does sometimes drop connection which isn't the most reliable.

Quality prints, a bit bulky

 Enter the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw. This gem took about 5-7 minutes to initially setup via USB connection, all very simple and self-explanatory. Printed a test sheet, then went to the touch screen to set up wireless connection. The touch screen looks small and easy to "fat-finger", but I never hit a wrong character

Best Home Tech Upgrade

 Sorry I ever bought this machine as I really need book scan capability. 3 - HP is notorious for expensive toner cartridges, and if you have never had an HP machine before, beware - there is an embedded microchip in their cartridges that the machine will read and refuse to work with cheaper after-market cartridges unless you go thru the process of removing & replacing the chip  All in all, the machine works well but is NOT designed to be user friendly. Sorry I bought it, I will be looking elsewhere to replace it.

Update after 1 year of use .... crappy functionality

The ink cartridge that came with the printer is malfuctioning; it won't seat properly and the printer door cannot close, so no printing can occur. Would like to reach out to seller but cannot identify (HP already directed me to do so, before they would help me). Any leads?

Cartridge Error

 After researching dozens of options, I settled on this HP model.  Here's what I love:  Literally lives up to the word "laser" in its speed. Spits out the work almost before your finger leaves the print button.  The touch screen is a great feature, and lets you choose what you want to do with documents you put in the feeder

 This is needlessly expensive and almost kept me from buying the printer (the USB port, its placement in the front of the unit, and the color of the printer were among the deciding factors).  The drum and cartridge that came with the unit are still putting out great copies (even though there's an alert that toner is getting low). I never replace toner until I absolutely have to; I purchased the replacement (high volume) cartridge/drum when I bought the printer, just to have on hand and it's still in its box. It appears the HP laser printer will produce a lot of good copies with its original toner before you have to invest in the toner unit

  The cost of the toner (which requires buying the drum, too) is the reason for only four stars. I'd have rated it 4-1/2 if that option were possible, because I really do love the printer and all its features.

The local Staples has both the Brother MFC-L8900CDW and HP M479fdw all-in-one printers in stock. I want something that is going to be very reliable and long lasting while also having good print and scan quality.

With the latter choice, you will be locked into paying those higher costs for the life of the printer... One commonly overlooked advantage from larger printers such as the MFC-L8900CDW, comes from the ability to use larger toner cartridges which brings the cost per page down significantly

I'm looking at these two models, as well as the Canon MF743Cdw.  The Canon has significantly better reviews on Rtings than the MFC-L3770CDW as far as the quality of color printing.  Of course it is also a higher "tier" of printer with a higher price tag.  

On Rtings, there is a pretty definite "progression" in terms of color image quality as you move farther up the stack - for example the Canon MF644Cdw is obviously worse than the MF743Cdw, and the Brother HL-3270CDW is obviously worse than the MFC-L3770CDW.  However, they don't have a review for the MFC-L8900CDW.

If I go to the Brother MFC-L8900CDW, will I get a step in image quality that brings it reasonably comparable to the Canon MF743Cdw?  Or at least, is the color quality notably better than the L3770CDW?

The prices are:

* Brother MFC-L3770CDW - $430
* Canon MF743CDW - $530
* Brother MFC-L8900CDW - $550

That's pretty much what I've narrowed it down to - I need duplex scanning and if I'm going to shell out that much I'll also take the step to at least entry level color, since it doesn't look like I'll be going back to the office anytime soon.  I don't really have a ton of requirements other than that, although good Linux support would be nice.  I'm familiar with what Brother does there and it's generally fine.  Not interested in HP units.

The canon one seems to have complaints about its ADF unfortunately, which is kind of the whole reason for an upgrade in the first place.  But the color image quality does seem to be notably better than the MFC-L3770CDW.

I don't mind spending what the Canon costs, but I'd rather go with the Brother MFC-L8900CDW for the driver support/etc.  If it's not going to provide the same quality as the Canon but closer to the lower-tier Brother model, I'd save the money and just get the MFC-L3770CDW.

Purchase color laser

SO FAR THIS PRINTER IS WORKING GREAT FOR OUR NEEDS. I WORK FOR A SMALL BUSINESS AND WE RECENTLY DOWNSIZED TO THIS PRINTER FROM A BIG COPIER AND WE HAVE NO REGRETS SO FAR. THE ONLY COMPLAINT WE HAVE IS THE SCANNING SPEED, JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FASTER. OTHER THAN THAT WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH OUR PURCHASE

GREAT FOR WHAT WE NEEDED

 It had to scan and print duplex. The consumables had to be reasonably priced. Most importantly, it had to support web services like scanning to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box. It had to support cloud printing like Google Cloud Print

 My inkjet-based Epson was no longer cutting it. The ink cartridges were a pain, with nozzles drying up. The world had moved forward, and the Epson couldn’t scan directly to Google Drive. I was doing the USB drive shuffle to move files

Good machine, but has a few problems

 This is a mix of paper stock, with some booklets that I cut in half with a paper cutter, about 30-50 sheets double sided. After separating all of this into individual sheets, of all the varying content, the ADF handles it with aplomb except one item that is made of a very thin front sheet separated from a cardstock thickness back - this single document is not handled by the ADF so I have to take it out and use the flatbed scanner on this (or another scanner). The device really shines here. When scanned to searchable document, it auto rotates individual pages inside the PDF

 This is heavy, it is definitely a two person job to move or install it. Removing the packaging takes 10-15 minutes. From there, connecting to Wifi is very easy from the touchscreen. Connecting to OneDrive for Business uses a computer (one grants the connection from a web browser and then enters a numeric code onto the printer), and from there, it can scan directly to a folder on the OneDrive (or other consumer or business cloud services, SharePoint, etc) with ease

A sweet duplex ADF scan-to-cloud with a nice printer thrown in.
