 Hey skiers, it's Bob with SkiEssentials.com. Welcome to our 2022 ski test. We've got a Head Core X80 for you today

 So this 80 here gets a composite wood core with a graphene laminate to it, making it just a little bit heavier than the other ones, but no less energetic. They also do a half or a partial full sidewall with the tips and tails as a full cap. So it's a little bit different of a construction versus that full sidewall in the 85 and 90, making it a little bit quicker in the tips and tails, and still providing that great edge grip underfoot. So 80 millimeters underfoot, this one, 170 here, generates a 13

 This does not lock you in the turn, but rather allows you to kind of dictate where you're going to release and end your turn. Really smart way of building a ski for, you know, an intermediate skier who's not totally comfortable or confident leaning into, you know, a ski with, you know, more of a squared off tail, this round tail really makes it more playful and easier to exit, you know, and that allows you to build your confidence, rather than just having to adapt to the way that the ski is shaped, it's a, you know, they have their core line to build off of, and that's one of the nice things about it. So really that lower end intermediate, all the way up to an advanced skier, going to really enjoy the energy out of this ski, you know, good edge grip underfoot with that, with that vertical sidewall, and then maneuverable in the tips and tails with the cap build there.  So we do get some really nice positive camber underfoot, some nice bounce there. That's going to translate some good kick at the end of the turn when you're in a carve. And then in terms of the rocker profile, you know, pretty standard stuff for an 80 millimeter all-mountain ski, you know, starts about there, right in line with where the taper shape goes, so widest part of the ski, lines up with the rocker profile, goes to this moderate splay in the tip, you know, good for mixed conditions, you know, anything from bulletproof snow to pretty new fluff, that tip shape is going to work really well. And the tail, you know, sort of similar, that rocker is a little bit lower, but we do get a good amount of taper, early taper, very rounded shape in the tail, so that widest part's a little bit farther back

It remains an extremely powerful and precise all-mountain option that’s perfectly happy in the hands of hard chargers at speed. Volkl did make some tweaks to the Titanal Frame construction: shorter skis now have less metal and are a little softer, while longer options are stronger with more metal. You also get the brand’s 3D Radius (also found in the Kendo below), which effectively gives the ski three different turn radii. In practice, it’s pretty impressive, and the M6 feels comfortable at everything from tight and quick turns to wide GS sweepers.

It’s a close call between the M6 and Nordica Enforcer above, and both are versatile, standout models. In parsing out the differences, the Mantra is noticeably wider at the tip (by 8mm), and its stiffer build gives it the advantage in terms of stability. But the Nordica is more comfortable in tight spaces with its nimble, easier-to-manage flex (this also makes it a better option for intermediate-level skiers). Both are excellent one-quiver options for riders that spend the majority of their time on groomers or in regions with moderate snowfall. 6'0 270lbs here. Volkl M6 Mantra 184 is what I ski, and before that I was on an older pair of Matra's. This is what you want, or something similarly stiff like a Nordica Enforcer etc.

I recently switched from boards to skiing again and am looking for a solid all mountain ski that will actually let me carve instead of just folding and sliding sideways.  I don't have much faith in the Amazon sponsored lists, and every manufacturer seems happy to say that their ski will work great, so I'm looking for real world info.

I am 6'3" and presently 260lbs and falling (down from 300).  I intend to reach a 230lb goal weight by next season.  I am mostly on 184 k2 poacher twin tips, but the whole twin thing isnt as fun as I had expected.  I have a worn out pair of 193 salomon xscreams that are old and shitty.  I ski midwest groomed/ice 95% of the time 2+ times a week with occasional real snowfall and 1-2 trips west.  I'd say I'm solid intermediate maybe a little advanced, sometimes I like to go 25-30mph according to gps.

I have been told to get skis with metal, and avoid the capped ones for ones with more rigid sidewalls.  Hoping to look late or off season because I just spent alot on proper boots.  Anyone have advice?

2023 Volkl M6 Mantra - Ski Review

 So we get tailored titanal frame and we get tailored carbon tip. Tailored titanal frame is pretty darn cool. Simply they took some metal out of the tip of the ski. So if you're to compare m5 mantra, m6 mantra the metal frame, especially just right in the end of the ski or only in right, in the end of the ski and in the tail as well

 Something that really kind of jumped out to me is. Is this morning we skied with uh, with a local local skier named christy who's who's, very, very good. At skiing racing background, she's been with vocal for a long time as like an athlete ambassador type position, she normally skis something like a 170 secret. I had her test the 177 m6 mantra this morning and watching her

 You know you're, probably going to take this ski off trail from time to time, just because, if you're choosing this width chances are you're going to be skiing, something other than just a groomer. So it's achieving that high level of carving performance, high level, precision and responsiveness and edge grip, while still being a relatively versatile ski. So all of that stuff carries over to this new mantra. They did a really good job of retaining what was already great about it, and to me that the highlighting characteristic of this ski has always been its precision

 So taking some swing weight out of the tip of the ski and what makes it tailored is it changes per length? So this is kind of similar to, or at least reminds me of what blizzard's doing with their true blend wood core. Basically, the the engineers at vocal are looking for ways to kind of custom, tweak the performance for each length of the ski, which i think is really cool and, and i think something that we'll probably see work its way into more and more brands in the ski Industry so take this 184 take the 184 and the 177 m6 mantra. This 184 has a longer thicker part of the metal. You know, essentially, the this portion is very similar, but this portion is longer and you know without measuring

 The upper laminate is a frame, so around the back here there's a little break, and then underfoot, another break, and then a frame in the shovel here. So that means that whenever you put this thing on edge, the first thing that's going to hit the snow is metal, and that gives it the precision. And then at the end, the last thing that hits the snow, again, full metal over the edge, so you get a ton of power out of the turn.
