 I watch grocery flyers for sales and will stock up on the cone filters then. The price difference did concern him but I am a conservative & coupon shopper - so I will watch for sales.

This model does not have a brew strength selector. You control the strength by the amount of coffee grounds you put in, usually 1 teaspoon of coffee (more or less to taste) per cup. He knows how he likes his coffee so he did not need the brew strength selector.

 You have to put the carafe back on the hotplate within 20 seconds or the filter basket could over flow.

My husband is very particular about his coffee. He is retired and an early riser and starts his day with a cup of black coffee before even able to string sentences together. He does not like fancy coffees & features he'll never use.

Good product so far...

 After installing the #4 paper coffee filter into the basket, I programmed the correct time and then the time I wanted the coffee to start brewing. This was 10 minutes from the set time so I could have the coffee ready. After 10 minutes, the brewing process started. It took 12 minutes for the completion of the brewing

Hot Fresh Coffee!

What do you really need in a coffee maker? Good coffee, of course, as well as reliability, ease of use, and easy cleaning. Few things annoy me more than those high-tech coffee makers that have whiz-bang features that are supposed to make your life better but ultimately just cause confusion and extra costs (for the coffeemaker itself, charcoal filters, built-in bean grinders, etc.). I don't even really need the timer; I just stagger into the kitchen in the morning and push the "On" button

 A little clunky looking maybe, but all-in-all seemed like it fit the specifications I wanted.  I'll now cut to the chase. After brewing 4 different kinds of bean roasts (my own Italian plus 3 Starbucks), and trying both the Starbucks recipe (2 TB coffee for every 6 oz of water) and my son's (1/2 cup bean for 10-5oz. cups) the verdict is in

  First off, I wanted to make sure the temperature of the coffee was at or near the stated temperature of 200 degrees. I removed the coffee holder portion of the brewer and held a large glass measuring cup directly under where the water exits the heater. It was consistently 188 degrees. And yes, my thermometer was calibrated to boiling point at my altitude/pressure

 After a total of 10 brews all of them were below average and some were so bitter they were nearly undrinkable.  Time for a little testing..

 But it's there if you need it!  Some not so likable things: The coffee maker takes a while to brew a pot! By a while, I mean 10-15 minutes. While this may not seem like a long time, most brewing methods should not have the water in contact with the grounds for more than 6 minutes max. Although the brew time for this machine doesn't seem to affect taste too much. Most coffee comes out slightly more bitter than when I brew with my Chemex, but it is still pretty tasty

A good basic coffee make

 It is constructed well and does not appear flimsy.  So far, this appears to be a winner. I will update this review as needed.

 I have had the Zojirushi for a week now. So far, it has been excellent. I measure the temp in the carafe at 188 degrees and in the coffee ground bed at 200-202 degrees and the coffee tastes excellent. I brew using the 'time-saver' option and a full pot of 50 ounces takes about 9-10 minutes to brew

 The coffee is extracted very well without undue bitterness. I generally roast to a 'full city' or 'medium' (10-15 seconds into second crack) level so I don't roast out all the varietal character from the coffee.  The carafe keeps the coffee hot for at least four hours; we have always finished the coffee by this point. It uses a 8-12 cup cone basket and I use Melitta filters rather than the included permanent filter; my wife does not like fines/sludge in her coffee
