 It is consistent and does not crash. It displays family photos so it can double as a picture frame. The controls are great for home automation products. I have Lutron caseta ceiling fan switches and the interface is nice on the nest hub max

 Unfortunately this product had no “surprise and delight” features I could marvel at. It does exactly what I bought it for. Nothing more and nothing less. As a result, I feel a bit underwhelmed of this product

Amazon’s midsize Echo Show 8 is the best smart display in its lineup. It is larger and more capable than the diminutive Echo Show 5, while costing far less than the larger Echo Show 10. The Echo Show 8 is handy for watching video, listening to music, getting weather reports, controlling smart home devices, making video calls, and more.

So it’s no surprise that the second-generation model, which sells for $129.99 and is shipping this week, doesn’t rock the boat. It’s largely the same smart display as before but with slightly faster performance and an improved video calling camera. It has the same display, same design, same speaker system, and the same set of features as its predecessor

Still the best Alexa smart display

 I wanted the 8" device to put in the kitchen (the smaller 5" one is now in the bedroom). This makes it easier for family members to use and see the screen. It will be interesting to see where Alexa goes in the coming years. I recently saw an Alexa-enabled soap dispenser - which is going a bit overboard (IMHO) but I am sure the Amazon folks are working on a number of new uses

Alexa is Ruling the House

Do any of you have a Show that does a terrific job of hearing you? Please give me your suggestions.  If I have to get a refurbished first Gen Show and put up with sub-optimal audio, so be it.  I am just plain DONE with having my Show sit there like a deaf rock while I scream ZIGGY ZIGGY ZIGGY and get no blue light bar on its screen in response to my pleas.

After yet another bout of screaming at my Echo Show 8 to try to get it to recognize its own wake word, I've had enough.  I need a Show for my kitchen that consistently recognizes its wake word.  My original gen 1 Show did (and still does in my laundry room) a perfect job recognizing "Alexa" at normal speaking volume. Though I've enjoyed the richer sound quality from the Show 8, it misses what I say so often it's actually become more of a nuisance than an assistant

 I could only get it to work once on my Echo Show 5 and had to send it back for a replacement (haven't tested it again since I received my new one). I see others mentioning this issue online and the recommended solution is always the same, try turning off the camera features and turning them back on. I have repeatedly tried this and have tried using the Live View from multiple devices, and the success rate is very low. It's to the point now that even if I don't want to make a call to another Echo device, I will still just use the Drop In feature because I know Live View won't work, or will take multiple attempts before it actually connects

 If Amazon can improve this aspect of the devices, I will be MUCH happier with the entire Echo Show line.  The other issue I have is with the camera features. Drop Ins seem to work almost every time, without any issues at all. Live View however, works about 50% of the time on the Echo Show 15 and 8

Great product but can sometime be frustrating when speaking.

 Turning on lights, dimming them, changing their color, or turning on the lights before ever entering a room are all such simple things, yet so useful. Plus, my disabled mother no longer walks into a dark bedroom. That's fantastic.  * I have it set to automatically turn on the living room light at sunrise and at sunset, and to automatically turn them off an hour or two after sunrise

Imperfect, glad that I bought it on sale

 I wanted something to help me around the home. My plans included turning lights, reminding me of upcoming events and controlling my tv. I did my research and I felt this device would serve my needs. I received my Echo and Sengled smart bulbs

 The article I found says that I need a motion sensor to trigger the the device. I looked at the directions, discovered that this device doesn’t not have a smart hub built in it. Some of devices in the Amazon smart devices line up has a hub in them. Now I know why the Echo 10 is 140 dollars more

Newbie to home automation

 The camera feed from it can be easily seen on Alexa. I am a little disappointed that it does not have a mode to be just a large clock and weather display full time ( apparently previous version did ). I had hoped this would be a good replacement for a weather station display when I added some remote temperature sensors to my system I understand that display from those would depend on Alexa skill from their manufacturer. However I thought I could at least get a constant outdoor condition display then ask for info from my other sensors

Good size and decent sound for the size

 Alexa, show Driveway camera, followed by Alexa, show Front Door cam, etc... Because picture in picture (PIP) mode cannot be disabled or overridden, the video feed for the second and subsequent camera feeds requested show up in a tiny window (picture in picture frame)

This 2nd generation Echo Show 8 defaults to picture in picture mode which cannot be disabled.
