 Well, what's up dude and dudettes, thanks so much for joining me today on another video here at Gideon's tactical I'm Aaron. We're talking about pocket knives and edge tools If you're watching this video, you're probably really curious on what is a really good pocket knife You you have a certain budget and you're like, I just want like a really good knife Like what what is it and I get that question all the time and I've gotten that a lot more recently from you guys You know, what is your favorite pocket knife? What's the pocket knife that you take with you, you know regularly if you could only have one What would it be, you know those type of questions? and so I figured now would be a good time as any to revisit the Spyderco Manix 2 series and Give you three reasons on why it's my favorite pocket knife reason. Number one is that I believe it's just the right size It's just about perfect on its dimensions for both the blade and the handle with the blade. You're looking at 3

375 inch overall a blade length with a three inch cutting edge Now what's interesting is a lot of Spydercos they may have about that long a blade length But oftentimes it comes in at a cutting edge of like two and a quarter two and a half, you know 2.75 this gives you a lot of real estate in that blade length without it becoming this big giant like pocket dagger But not so compact that it's not really usable It's just kind of fun for opening some packaging and you know Those type of things that three inch cutting edge can do a lot of food prep It can do a lot of woods work It can do a lot of utility tasks that you want your pocket knife that's in your pocket to do regardless of it's breaking down Packages for that new, you know toy you order for your kids that just arrived, you know at the doorstep or if it's you know Preparing that meal when you're camping or backpacking or if you're carving and whittling around the campfire or doing heavier tasks You know doing gardening in the backyard getting ready for spring, you know Whatever it may be this design with that really good grind angle for that full flat grind That three inch cutting edge and then the three point three just gives you a good real estate to do just about anything That I've ever come in contact with when I need to use a pocket knife and then on the flip side the handle seems To just be right be perfect on so many aspects that I look for and I know lots of people look for in a pocket knife It's not too small, but it's not ginormous. The handle scales are gonna come in about four point six five inches overall It's gonna be a zero point four five inches thick So it's under a half an inch thick and the lightweight version which I really connect with Comes in at three ounces for this size a knife and what that means is with the large size hands that I have here We're large size gloves as many of you regulars know here at the channel You can see I got real estate out the back and there so people with larger hands are gonna be able to Fill that out very nicely. It's nice and wide but still being slim So it fits in that pocket It doesn't feel like a tank in your pocket But you really can grab onto that and you have a really good spot there to be able to cut you got that nice Jimping there and then you do have a choil that I can choke up and get really fine motor control skills and motor Cuts that I need fine motor control skills for I can do that with this tool But that choil doesn't eat up that blade length like I talked about and it's not something that you feel like you have to use To get that full real estate on The handle so regardless if it's the blade or it's the handle I feel like it's just right for just about every scenario You're gonna need your pocket knife to do both in blade performance, but also in handle size and ergonomics Now reason number two is that anyone can use this blade? I know only 10% of the population are left handed But I have people in my family and that are close to me that are lefties that are always looking for a fully ambidextrous blade and this knife hits it the pocket clip is completely ambidextrous the deployment hole completely ambidextrous and the Locking mechanism righties and lefties can use without issue and there's some of my favorite ways to lock deploy and carry a Pocket knife this wire pocket clip is so thin and so Inconspicuous that a lot of people won't even know you're carrying a pocket knife and the way it's designed It's gonna give you just enough to pinch and pull out without it being a complete loop over deep ride So it's good to be able to be used if you wear gloves a lot You'll be able to deploy it easier than a lot of other knives

 What's going on YouTube Metal Complex here and today I've got another interesting knife review slash knife overview to share with you guys. This is the Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight in Maximate. This knife has been around for a little bit. It's not necessarily a new knife, but it's not an old knife

 It's one of my favorite things about the Manix 2. The ergonomics are extremely similar to the Hinder XM18. These are a little bit more friendly for a number of reasons. It's also, I mean, really similar to like the PM2, the Shaman, blah, blah, blah

 The blade is coming in at right about 3 and a half, cutting edge right about 3. That's fantastic. Some people don't like that forward choil. I do

Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight Maxamet - Overview and Review

 It is also available in a BD1 steel Which is a less great steel for about 20 bucks less and there's an S110V version Which is an even greater steel for about 40 bucks more so you can really choose your choose your choice here Choose your choice doesn't even make sense anyway, so you can choose whatever steel you'd like But the steel here is great and the blade itself is really nicely done It's not oh my god thick which is nice, and it's very tall so you get a very nice Sort of well it gradually comes out there, which makes this a very nice slicer This blade is really meant to cut things which is beautiful frankly. I also like the blade finish It's reflective enough to remind you that it's metal, but it's not so reflective as to be you know showing scratches and whatnot Beautiful thing so that's good next thing the aligners on this guy these are full liners So you can see here there is no part of the knife that the liners do not cover Which is nice, and you've also got a metal portion up here which holds the ball bearing lock So that's the next thing the ball bearing lock is kind of a little unusual in Spyderco's lineup But basically what happens is you pull this little piece back in order to unlock the knife And so the blade can kind of flop around when that part is open And then when you lock the knife it just springs forward because it's on a little spring here You can see a better view of this in the disassembly video, but the ball bearing lock is pretty nice It has a lot of the advantages of the Benchmade Axis lock don't have one of those handy But it also in that you know it allows you to just let the blade swing shut like that it allows you to Deploy with the lock only if you'd like But it doesn't have some of the disadvantages It's using a much stronger spring rather than the Omega Springs on the Benchmade and frankly it's a little smoother because it's a ball rolling against the tang of the blade rather than a You know bar that's scraping along the back of it, so it's it's a nice comparable sort of lock But it's different enough, and it's different in some good ways, but it's also strong It can be free-dropping and it is a relatively smooth lock so I get no issue with the ball bearing lock here This is absolutely a solid lock no freaking problem. That's nice next thing on this guy This is completely ambidextrous, which is nice You can see here that the ball bearing lock has cutouts on both sides I and it doesn't really matter which hand you use on them I'm sure I could do this with my left hand if I were just a little bit more left-hand friendly I am NOT up and it can also be clipped on the left side as well, so that's nice Um and so it is a great choice for a lefty and then finally um the other beautiful thing here Is that this has a lot of sprint runs Spyderco because this is made at the Golden Factory I will very often do a run of this using maybe a different color g10 and a different steel So right now I was able to just with a quick search find an s90v with CPM 154 Composite which is kind of neat as well as I found the references to one in m4 steel Which is incredible and then the lightweight version of this guy has Maximet Which is one of the very neatest steels out there right now a brand new can't wait to get my hands on some of it But anyways, um, so you get these sprint runs every so often So if you want something that's a little bit weird in the steel department Spyderco can probably hook you up You're not just stuck with one or two options So to me at least that's what's really good about this. You get the sprint runs It's ambidextrous the ball bearing lock has some pretty serious advantages and lacks the disadvantages as some of the competition The full line is just make this even beefier than it already is and make it a pretty solid feeling knife overall The blade on this knife is incredible because it's got a nice steel and it's really it's meant to cut The way it's ground is meant to be a cutting tool and it's made in the USA to top it all off Which is itself just a beautiful thing

The Spyderco Manix 2 Pocketknife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

 It has a bit of heft as the liners are not milled out although its ergonomics are well executed. It is bigger than I thought it would be and has a width which demands more pocket space than say a thinner and slimmer profile knife such as a Kershaw Skyline/HK Vex/ Kershaw Zing. I don't mind weight but it should have been milled out as its larger brother the XL is. This is the only thing that I can criticize

This Manix 2 is a tank of a knife. I was expecting a smaller package as I have never handled or seen one in person, just heard all the praise of it online. Don't have a Spyderco Manix yet? Get any version, its a great knife.

 The blades all lock firmly open and are easy to close. I'll be careful to avoid this type of lock in the future, and suggest other buyers do that also, starting now.  UPDATE 9/17/18 -- After a year or so of occasional use, the blade lock has broken-in a bit and is easier to operate. I'm now fairly confident that I'll be able to close it every time, though that requires more attention or focus and finger strength than other types of locks on equivalent size knives

I notice that the Spyderco website shows a "Manix 2 Mid Back Lock G10 Fine" which appears to be just what the proverbial doctor ordered, but it is $50 more based on their prices. It is not available with a combination or full Spyder edge, though
