Hey everyone!

I'm an amateur hiker/backpacker and love going on local trips. Although I'd definitely aim for mountaineering in the near future, first Id like to hike all the hike-able or trekkable mountains in the country I reside in, then move to that category.

That has been going pretty good so far, but since I've been doing it for quite a few years now, I feel like I should invest more into my gear a bit to make these hikes just a tad more enjoyable. Recently went as light as possible, replacing a lot of weight (oops), but one of my biggest issues always been a light jacket that can do the following: protect from surprise wind/shade/light rain in summer, when it makes you just a bit cold to make t-shirts uncomfortable but not to take it off every time the sun comes back up for 2 minutes because Im sweating. Lots of times I'd get on the summit or in a shady forest and it'd be chilly, Id grab a softshell but immediately started sweating if it got warmer a bit. Id also like to use it when camping, or early in the morning on top of a down jacket for extra protection.

Will the gamma SL suit me? 

TLDR: Need a light jacket for surprise weather shifts (shade, light shower, windy summit) without having to take it off every time the sun comes back up / on top of other layers for extra protection.

Gamma SL the right decision?

 So how does the Rab Borealis jacket fit? Well if you're familiar with our videos you will know by now that I am 6 foot 3, I've got a 42 inch chest, a 34 inch waist and this is a size large and the fit is bang on perfect, it's really nice, I've just got a lightweight shirt on under here today but I have got room under here if I wanted to put a lightweight insulator, you know something like an SMLT or something like that would go under here quite easily, there's a little bit of room but it's not too big and baggy, it's a slimish fit but again because of that stretch in the fabric it will go over other layers really easily. Sleeves are nice and long, I've got really long arms, I found out the other day I've got a plus 2 arm index which means my arms are 2 inches longer than my height. So these sleeves are nice and long but they're not going to fall down over your hands and be annoying if you've got shorter arms because of that lycra down on the bottom, so a slim fit but enough room for extra layers should you require. Where does the Borealis jacket fit in the layering system? I just said this to Harry jokingly and he just said everywhere and he's absolutely right it fits everywhere in the layering system, perhaps not against your skin as a base layer but it certainly works as a lightweight mid layer, I'm a big fan of wearing mine underneath my waterproof hard shell over a base layer just to provide a little bit of insulation, I'm not a big fan of having that hard shell cold clammy feeling against my skin so wearing something like this underneath just gives an extra layer of comfort, tiny little bit of insulation because I run hot so it works brilliantly as a mid layer, it's super breathable, it works really well as an outer layer if it's not absolutely hammering it down with rain it will shrug off light showers, snow, hail etc, it will keep the wind off and it's super breathable so it's a massively, massively versatile piece of kit, I really can't think of any other hyperbole that's going to persuade you to go and have a look at it because it's just fantastic

 Moving down you've got a straight cut sleeve, there's not a huge amount of what we call articulation in there but you don't need it because the fabric is so stretchy it doesn't need clever patterning and design, it just moves with you, it's super stretchy. And they're finished off with just a simple lycra binding which means that if it's getting a bit warm like today you can easily pull them up and they stay put and you can get some fresh air to those veins up on your arms there and cool you down. Right down at the bottom of the hem there's a dual single pull draw cord just to cinch that in, keep the wind out, keep the warmth in and that's about it, really nice and simple. Oh one more thing Harry, sorry I almost forgot, on this left hand pocket you'll notice that it's a double headed zip, basically that means you can turn this pocket inside out when you're not wearing the jacket obviously and you can stuff the jacket into its own pocket, stash it away nice and small should you decide you want to take it off which is highly unlikely because it's so comfortable

 So starting at the top you get a scuba hood so it fits underneath the helmet. You might be able to stretch it over the top if you don't fancy wearing it underneath but personally I find it works much better underneath the helmet it's much more comfortable so it's a stretchy close fit hood with a lycra hem binding on it. You get a lightweight one way zip down the front and then you get two Napoleon chest pockets and they're called Napoleon chest pockets because you put your right hand into the left pocket and your left hand into the right pocket. And you may be wondering why they're sat up here out of the way, why they're not down here where you can put your hands in

The Borealis is one of the lightest, most breathable and most versatile softshell jackets in existence. Use it for mountaineering, walking, climbing, scrambling, walking around town, as a midlayer, as an outer layer; the possibilities are endless!

 Right, super changeable day today, so I've decided to show you my Rab Borealis jacket. Quite a fetching Aspen green. It's quite a funky colour, this one. I really like it myself, something a little bit different

 Just to give you an idea of sizing, I'm 5'8", about 70 kilos. They say slim fit and it's fairly slim to be fair, but that gives you an idea of what size might be suitable for you.
